feat(core): stitch continued route attempts into one turn - #762
Continuation chunks of an output-token-limit response were logged as unrelated route_attempt rows, so a multi-chunk response had no link to the attempt that started it and no turn-level total.
route_attempt gains continuation_of (nullable integer), continuation_index (integer default 0) and an index on continuation_of (migration 20261028203055_route_attempt_continuation).
The runner records the attempt that started the response and the chunk index on every attempt of that response: retries and hedge legs of the first chunk, a truncated response that runs a local tool and continues in the next step, and a continuation that fails (which keeps its own row, outcome and error).
ModelUsage.turns, read through ModelRouteLog.turnAttempts, groups a root attempt, its retries and its continuations, and sums tokens, cost and duration. route_usage lists continued turns, filtered by the same provider/model selection as the target and day reports.
No routing or continuation behaviour changed beyond recording the link.

New Features
Responses split across output limits are now linked and reported as a single continued turn, with combined usage, timing, failures, and costs.
Route usage reports now include details for continued turns, with provider and model filtering.
Response chunks produced by an output-token-limit continuation were logged as
unrelated route_attempt rows. Record the attempt that started the response on
every continuation and roll attempts up per turn so route_usage reports one
token and cost figure for a multi-chunk response.
- route_attempt gains continuation_of and continuation_index plus an index on
the link
- the runner passes the root assistant message and chunk index; the writer
resolves the root row id at persist time, so a retried or hedged first chunk
still links to the attempt that answered
- ModelUsage.turns groups a root attempt, its retries and hedge legs and its
continuations; route_usage lists continued turns
- tests cover linking, failed chunks and turn totals
The change links output-limit continuation attempts to their originating response. It adds route-attempt storage for continuation references and chunk indexes, groups attempts into turns with aggregated usage and timing, and exposes continued-turn details through route_usage.
The route_attempt schema adds nullable continuation columns, a default chunk index of 0, and an index on continuation_of. The migration is registered and the schema snapshots are updated.
The runner carries a response link and chunk index across output-limit continuations and passes that metadata to attempt logging. Recovery and compaction paths reset continuation state. Tests cover multiple truncated chunks and unfinished local tool input.
Attempt persistence and turn aggregation packages/core/src/model-route-log.ts, packages/core/src/model-usage.ts, packages/core/test/model-route-log.test.ts, packages/core/test/model-usage.test.ts
Attempt persistence links continuation attempts to the newest standalone attempt for the same session and assistant message. Turn aggregation combines requests, failures, tokens, cost, and timing. Tests cover retries, missing roots, and aggregated values.
route_usage returns continued turns that match provider and model filters, subject to the configured limit. Its output includes turn counts and details. Tests check aggregation and provider filtering.

Explanation
All changed areas map to issue #8 work. The migration, migration.gen.ts, schema.gen.ts, schema.json, and sql.ts add the link columns and index. model-route-log.ts adds the continuation link on persistence and the turnAttempts query. model-usage.ts adds turns. runner/llm.ts and runner/step.ts carry the link across steps and chunk indexes. route-usage.ts lists continued turns with the existing provider and model filters. The tests cover these changes. The PR description states that no routing or continuation behavior changed beyond recording the link. No unrelated changes were identified in the summary. The CI failures in packages/tui are reported by the author as present on main and are not part of this diff.

Explanation
Issue #8 coding requirements, verified against the diff summary and packages/core/src/model-usage.ts at head:
Linking [#8, acceptance criterion 1]: Met. The migration 20261028203055_route_attempt_continuation adds nullable continuation_of, continuation_index (default 0), and an index on continuation_of. The runner sets the link on continuation chunks, and turns groups by continuationOf.
Rollups [#8, criterion 2]: Met. ModelUsage.turns sums input, output, reasoning, cache, cost, and requests per turn. route_usage lists continued turns. Session reports still count every chunk.
Failed continuation [#8, criterion 3]: Met by the described behavior. A failed continuation keeps its own row, outcome, and error. The turns failure count includes failure and timeout outcomes.
Unit tests [#8, criterion 4]: Met by the listed tests in model-usage.test.ts, model-route-log.test.ts, and session-runner.test.ts.
Open point [#8, Technical Specifications section 3]: The issue asks to exclude duplicate cached prefixes from input-token totals "where applicable". turns sums the raw input field and keeps cacheRead and cacheWrite in separate fields, as the module documents. The code does not subtract cached prefixes. The PR description does not state whether this case applies to the recorded input tokens. The evidence does not show whether duplicate cached prefixes occur in the recorded data, so this requirement cannot be decided.
Resolution
Confirm whether provider-reported input tokens for continuation chunks include cached prefixes that repeat across chunks. If they do, the turn input total needs a documented exclusion for those prefixes. If they do not, record that conclusion in the PR or the issue so the requirement can be closed as not applicable.

A truncated response that also called a local tool ends its step so the tool
can settle, and the response continues in the next step. Carry the response's
root attempt and chunk index into that step, and drop it when newly promoted
input starts a separate response. Also narrow the route_usage turn list by the
provider and model filters the other reports apply.
CI note: every check is green except test/unit (linux) and test/unit (windows), which both fail in packages/tui/test/cli/tui/input-scope.test.tsx (Route context must be used within a context provider). That is pre-existing and unrelated: the same two jobs fail the same way on main at 0b51b19 (run 40771187197). This PR touches only packages/core and test/affected packages passes. Local: bun test for model-usage/model-route-log/route-usage-tool → 40 pass; session-runner/session-execution/database-migration → 290 pass; bun run check → 36 tasks successful.

…doff
When a truncated response leaves a local tool to settle, the step ends with
the link to the attempt that started the response and the next step continues
it. If a move is delivered before that next step, drain returned `Moved` (or
`Reloaded`) with `{ step }` only, so the resumed chunk was written without
`continuation_of` and started a new turn, splitting the response's tokens,
cost and duration across two turns in `ModelUsage.turns` and `route_usage`.
`SessionRunner.Continuation` now carries the step's `SessionStep.ContinuationLink`
and the drain restores it from its input, so both exits keep the link. The
reset on promoted input is unchanged.
