fix(composer): release sent attachments after onSubmit settles (UI-61) - #110
Stacked on #105 (UI-49), which moved submitting into store.submit(). Retarget to main once #105 merges.
Why
A message sent with an image should reach the model as a readable data: URL. The composer released each attachment, which by default revokes its blob: URL, before calling onSubmit. The playground's onSubmit then failed to fetch those URLs in prepareAttachmentsForSend and sent the dead blob: URL instead.
Reproduction
Playwright sent a PNG from /playground and captured the /api/chat request body:
File part URL
Before
blob:http://localhost:3160/f81edb9b-…
After
data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgo…
Fix
The attachment reducer has a hand-off action that empties the strip without calling destroy.
submit() hands the items off, calls onSubmit, and releases them in a finally once it settles, whether it resolves or throws.
It uses the destroy captured at submit time, so a policy change while the send is pending can't release items with a different policy.
The destroy doc comment and its docs row now say that sent items are released after onSubmit settles.
Tests
Two new tests in composer-submit.test.tsx, using createComposerStore() and store.submit():
onSubmit gets items that stay unreleased until it settles.
Items are released exactly once when onSubmit throws.
Both failed before the fix (releasedAtSubmit was [["pixel.png"]] instead of [[]]). The full package suite (617 tests), typecheck, Biome and scripts/audit-docs.mjs pass.
An independent review found nothing blocking. These cases were checked by reading the code, not by tests:
A second submit while one is pending.
Unmounting during a pending onSubmit.
A throwing onSubmit.
None releases an item twice or misses one.
Known limits
If a consumer's destroy throws on the first item, the rest are not released. The old reset loop had the same flaw.
If onSubmit never settles, its items are never released. That follows from releasing on settle.
Changeset: patch.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Sent attachments now remain available while submission is being handled, so their previews are not released prematurely. Attachments are cleaned up after submission finishes, including when submission fails.
Documentation
Clarified when sent and removed attachments are cleaned up.
submit() reset the attachment strip before calling onSubmit, which ran
the policy's destroy and revoked each blob: URL. An onSubmit that
inlines the files, such as the playground's prepareAttachmentsForSend,
fetched dead URLs and sent the blob: URL instead of a data: URL.
The strip is now emptied with a hand-off that does not destroy, and the
items are released in a finally once onSubmit settles.

Composer now removes submitted attachments from its store without releasing them, awaits onSubmit, then destroys them whether the callback resolves or fails. The reducer adds a hand-off action, tests cover successful and failed submissions, and documentation and a patch changeset describe the cleanup timing.
The reducer handles hand-off by clearing attachment state without destroying its items. The existing reset action still destroys items.

Submission hands off attachments, clears the editor, and awaits onSubmit. A finally block destroys each submitted attachment. Tests cover resolved and failed callbacks. The prop descriptions and patch changeset document the cleanup timing.
A throwing value-change handler can leave attachment URLs unreleased. The change is mergeable with this bounded cleanup risk understood.

Start cleanup protection before clearing the editor.
If a consumer’s onValueChange throws during controller.clear(), submit exits before this try block. The hand-off has already removed the attachments from store state, so neither onSubmit nor destroy runs. Move controller.clear() inside the try block so finally releases the handed-off attachments. The registered editor’s clear path invokes value-change callbacks. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
