Fix preview crash on UNC and malformed paths - #2052
Previewing a file selected from a UNC path (\\server\share\..., \\wsl$\...) can fail with System.ArgumentException: Illegal characters in path at Path.GetExtension inside ResolveShortcut. The same file previews correctly through a mapped drive. Path validation also runs in extension filtering and the info-card fallback, so one bad path can abort the whole preview.
Fix
Added PathHelper, which parses extensions for UNC paths without calling Path.GetExtension/Path.CheckInvalidPathChars, normalizes surrounding quotes and whitespace, and falls back to direct segment parsing for malformed paths.
ResolveShortcut now uses PathHelper.IsShortcut and returns the original path when a shortcut cannot be resolved, instead of throwing.
Extension filtering uses the safe extension parser.
The info card uses safe file-name/root parsing and catches ArgumentException while inspecting an unusable path, so it can still be shown.
Local paths and mapped drives keep the existing Path.GetExtension behavior.
dotnet test QuickLook.Tests/QuickLook.Tests.csproj -c Release
Result: passed 35, failed 0, skipped 0.
Before the fix, the malformed UNC cases failed with the same ArgumentException: Illegal characters in path from Path.CheckInvalidPathChars. The Release build of QuickLook and QuickLook.Common also succeeds.
- Parse extensions without Path.CheckInvalidPathChars for UNC paths.
- Return the original path when a shortcut cannot be resolved.
- Guard the info card against path parsing failures.
- Add regression tests covering SMB/WSL UNC, local, and malformed paths.

Walkthrough
The change adds shared path helpers for UNC and other paths. Extension filtering, shortcut resolution, and info display now use these helpers. Tests cover path extraction and detection, including malformed inputs.
Changes: UNC path handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Path parsing and tests QuickLook.Common/Helpers/PathHelper.cs, QuickLook.Tests/PathHelperTests.cs, QuickLook.Tests/QuickLook.Tests.csproj
Adds normalized path extraction and detection for extensions, filenames, roots, shortcuts, and UNC paths. Tests cover UNC, WSL, local, mapped-drive, and selected malformed paths.
Extension filtering and shortcut detection use PathHelper. Shortcut resolution returns the original path if loading or extraction fails, or if extraction returns an empty path. The info panel catches selected ArgumentException cases while reading file dates and sizes.
The UNC handling changes are mergeable with a bounded follow-up: malformed paths can display a misleading modification date in year 0001. Caller-level tests would improve regression protection.

Explanation
The title "Fix preview crash on UNC and malformed paths" matches the main change. The PR adds PathHelper to parse UNC and malformed paths without throwing ArgumentException, and wires it into shortcut resolution, extension filtering, and the info panel. The title is short, specific, and states the problem and the affected path types.

Explanation
All changed files relate to issue #2012. QuickLook.Common/Helpers/PathHelper.cs adds the safe UNC, extension, file-name, and root parsing used by the fix. QuickLook/NativeMethods/QuickLook.cs changes ResolveShortcut. QuickLook/Helpers/ExtensionFilterHelper.cs switches to PathHelper.GetExtension. QuickLook/Plugin/InfoPanel/InfoPanel.xaml.cs changes the info-card fallback for unusable paths, which the issue describes. QuickLook.Tests (csproj and PathHelperTests.cs) cover the new helper. The test project links PathHelper.cs as a compile item. Local and mapped-drive behavior remains on Path.GetExtension, so the change does not alter those paths. No unrelated feature or refactoring change appears in the summary.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2012 has one directly linked objective set. The minimum requirement is met: ResolveShortcut in QuickLook/NativeMethods/QuickLook.cs now calls PathHelper.IsShortcut, which avoids Path.GetExtension for UNC paths. The shortcut load and GetPath call are wrapped in try/catch(Exception) that returns the original path. Extension filtering in ExtensionFilterHelper uses PathHelper.GetExtension. The info card in InfoPanel.xaml.cs uses PathHelper for file name and root, and catches ArgumentException during size inspection. The main objective, that UNC files preview like local files, is not fully established. The issue reports a fallback info card on the first Spacebar press, which implies the preview match step can also fail. ViewWindowManager.InvokePreview calls PluginManager.FindMatch(path) with the UNC path. The reviewed diff does not change PluginManager or any plugin-matching code. I did not confirm whether FindMatch uses Path.GetExtension or another validating API on the UNC path.
Resolution
Provide the implementation of PluginManager.FindMatch (and any helper it calls) at the reviewed head, or confirm that it uses PathHelper or does not call Path.GetExtension on the raw path. Also confirm that no other preview-pipeline call (for example, plugin extension matching or GetCurrentSelection) passes an unguarded UNC path to Path.GetExtension, Path.GetFileName, or Path.CheckInvalidPathChars. If FindMatch can throw ArgumentException for a UNC path, that path needs the same safe parsing.

Catch UnauthorizedAccessException from the last-write-time read.
File.GetLastWriteTime(path) can throw UnauthorizedAccessException for a file the user cannot access. The catch (ArgumentException) clause does not handle it. The exception leaves DisplayInfo. InfoPanel is also the default plugin, so the viewer does not fall back. It closes and shows "Failed to preview".
Handle UnauthorizedAccessException with the same fallback as ArgumentException:
Suggested fix
- catch (ArgumentException)+ catch (Exception e) when (e is ArgumentException || e is UnauthorizedAccessException)
{
last = DateTime.MinValue;
}

Update the exception handling around File.GetLastWriteTime in DisplayInfo to
also catch UnauthorizedAccessException and assign the same DateTime.MinValue
fallback used for ArgumentException.
QuickLook.Tests compiles only PathHelper.cs. No test calls ExtensionFilterHelper.IsExtensionAllowed, ResolveShortcut, or InfoPanel.DisplayInfo. A regression in one of these callers leaves the suite passing. For example:
IsExtensionAllowed reverts to Path.GetExtension for a UNC path.
ResolveShortcut stops returning the original path when resolution fails.
DisplayInfo drops its fallback for a malformed path.
Tests on PathHelper alone do not detect these regressions. The tests must invoke these caller paths with UNC and malformed inputs and assert their results.

Extend QuickLook.Tests beyond PathHelper to invoke
ExtensionFilterHelper.IsExtensionAllowed, ResolveShortcut, and
InfoPanel.DisplayInfo. Add coverage for UNC and malformed paths that asserts
IsExtensionAllowed handles UNC paths, ResolveShortcut returns the original path
when resolution fails, and DisplayInfo preserves its malformed-path fallback;
include the necessary caller code in the test project without changing these
behaviors.
Do not show DateTime.MinValue as the modified date.
When File.GetLastWriteTime throws ArgumentException, the catch sets last to DateTime.MinValue. The card then shows a last-modified date in year 0001. Remove the date text in the catch block instead.
