Tools whose schema cannot be strict (for example $ref, z.any(), z.record()) are sent with strict: false, and nothing tells the developer. This PR makes adapters built on @tanstack/openai-base log a warning in development, once per tool, with the tool name and the reason. The warning never runs when NODE_ENV is production, and strictFallbackWarning: false in the adapter config turns it off.

🎯 Changes

  • openai-base: new strictModeFallbackReason(schema). It runs the same checks as isStrictModeCompatible, in the same order, and names the first one that fails.
  • openai-base: new warnStrictFallback(tools, logger). It logs through logger.warn once per tool object, and skips when NODE_ENV is production.
  • Both base adapters (chat-completions-text, responses-text) call it in mapOptionsToRequest. They take a new optional 4th constructor argument { strictFallbackWarning?: boolean } (default true).
  • ai-openai's Responses adapter calls it in its own mapOptionsToRequest override, which converts tools itself.
  • Every adapter config built on the base gets strictFallbackWarning: ai-openai (Responses, Chat Completions, OpenAI-compatible), ai-groq, ai-vercel-gateway, ai-bedrock, ai-byteplus, ai-llmgateway, ai-lovable, ai-cloudflare.
  • Docs: a "Tools that cannot use strict mode" section on the OpenAI adapter page, plus a link from the MCP tools page.

ai-grok and ai-openrouter are not changed. Their own tool converters never send strict, so there is nothing to warn about.

✅ Checklist

  • I have followed the steps in the Contributing guide.
  • I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
  • I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
  • Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
  • Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Testing

Commands run

  • New tests, before the change (origin/main + tests only): the three "warns once per tool" tests fail with expected "vi.fn()" to be called 1 times, but got 0 times (openai-base chat-completions, openai-base responses, ai-openai).
  • After the change: all pass. That includes two more tests showing that strictFallbackWarning: false and NODE_ENV=production each stop the warning, plus an ai-openai test that sets the flag through createOpenaiChat-style config.
  • test:types, test:oxlint, test:lib, and build for openai-base, ai-openai, ai-groq, ai-vercel-gateway, ai-bedrock, ai-byteplus, ai-llmgateway, ai-lovable, ai-cloudflare, and ai-grok: all pass.
  • pnpm test:docs and pnpm test:sherif: pass.
  • No E2E test: the E2E suite asserts on the UI and the wire, and a server-side dev log line is not visible there. The unit tests call the real adapter chatStream.
  • I did not run the full pnpm test:pr.

Manual test

  1. In development, call chat() with createOpenaiChat(...) and a tool whose inputSchema uses $ref.
  2. See one warning: tool "<name>" sent with strict: false: schema uses $ref, which strict mode does not support. A second request does not repeat it.
  3. Add strictFallbackWarning: false to the adapter config, or set NODE_ENV=production. The warning is gone.

How this PR makes testing easy

Unit tests in packages/openai-base/tests/chat-completions-text.test.ts, packages/openai-base/tests/responses-text.test.ts, and packages/ai-openai/tests/openai-adapter.test.ts.

Linked issues

Fixes #1213

Risk / rollback

Low. The request sent to the provider does not change. The change adds only a log line in development. A test suite that asserts "no warnings" can see a new line for a non-strict tool; set strictFallbackWarning: false there. Revert the PR to undo.

Public API change

Before

const adapter = createOpenaiChat('gpt-6-astra', apiKey)
// A tool with a $ref schema is sent with strict: false. No signal.

After

const adapter = createOpenaiChat('gpt-6-astra', apiKey)
// Development log, once per tool:
// tool "lookup_user" sent with strict: false: schema uses $ref, which strict mode does not support

const quiet = createOpenaiChat('gpt-6-astra', apiKey, {
  strictFallbackWarning: false,
})

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • OpenAI-compatible adapters now warn in development when a tool’s schema can’t use strict mode. The warning identifies the tool and the reason, and appears only once per tool.
    • Set strictFallbackWarning: false to disable these warnings. They are suppressed in production.
    • The option is available across OpenAI-compatible providers, including Bedrock, Groq, and Vercel AI Gateway.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on strict-mode fallbacks for tools with unsupported schemas, including MCP tools.

A tool whose schema cannot be strict is sent with strict: false, and nothing said so. Warn once per tool with the tool name and the reason. The warning never runs when NODE_ENV is production, and strictFallbackWarning: false in the adapter config turns it off.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

OpenAI-based adapters now warn when a tool schema cannot use strict mode. The warning includes the tool name and fallback reason, runs once per tool, and is suppressed in production. Adapter configuration can disable the warning with strictFallbackWarning: false.

Changes

Strict fallback warning

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect and report strict fallback
packages/openai-base/src/utils/schema-converter.ts, packages/openai-base/src/adapters/*, packages/openai-base/src/index.ts, packages/openai-base/tests/*
The schema converter returns a fallback reason for schemas that cannot use strict mode. The base adapters use it to warn once per affected tool. Tests cover warning content, repeated requests, the opt-out, and production suppression.
Pass warning options through adapters
packages/ai-openai/src/adapters/*, packages/ai-openai/src/compatible/*, packages/ai-openai/tests/openai-adapter.test.ts, packages/ai-bedrock/src/adapters/*, packages/ai-byteplus/src/adapters/text.ts, packages/ai-cloudflare/src/{adapters/text.ts,utils/config.ts}, packages/ai-groq/src/adapters/text.ts, packages/ai-llmgateway/src/adapters/text.ts, packages/ai-lovable/src/adapters/*, packages/ai-vercel-gateway/src/adapters/*
The listed adapter configurations expose or forward OpenAIBaseTextAdapterOptions to the base adapters. Compatible OpenAI adapters pass the warning option through their adapter selection paths.
Document fallback behavior
docs/adapters/openai.md, docs/tools/mcp.md, docs/config.json, .changeset/strict-fallback-warning.md
The documentation describes non-strict fallback, warning behavior, and the opt-out. The changeset records the warning change, and two documentation update dates change.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 05587

The requests remain usable, but developers may miss a fallback warning or receive one for a tool that was not sent. These bounded warning issues merit follow-up but do not block merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 05587

The request’s strict-mode fallback behavior appears unchanged, but the new warning can run outside development in some runtimes and can be suppressed on later attempts. The effects are primarily on tool-name disclosure and visibility of a weaker schema mode, not on tool authorization.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The development-only warning guard does not suppress output when process is absent or NODE_ENV is not exactly production. An enabled logger can therefore receive tool names in deployments outside the intended warning mode.
  • Low · security · observed: Process-wide, object-identity suppression is recorded before warning delivery and request conversion. A failed logger call or conversion can hide the fallback on a later successful attempt with the same tool object, weakening the diagnostic this PR introduces.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The shared warning path can affect multiple provider adapters, including a Cloudflare adapter intended for Workers. Its observable output is limited to the tool name and fallback reason, subject to logger settings; deployment-specific log access was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The Node production check, adapter opt-out, and logger category gate constrain warning output, but the production check has no equivalent when process is absent. Whether an attacker can choose a tool name on a reachable path remains unverified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — WeakSet access makes normal repeated calls at most once per tool object, but neither successful delivery nor successful conversion is required before the object is marked. Logger exceptions are swallowed.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define an explicit production-safe warning policy for runtimes without process, and consider recording once-state only when warning delivery meets the intended diagnostic contract.

Do not report tools that structured-output streams remove. Both mappers warn from chatOptions.tools before their structuredOutputStream paths remove those tools. A caller can therefore receive a “sent with strict: false” warning for a tool absent from the request.

Record a tool only after an enabled warning.

If the first request uses a logger with debug: false, InternalLogger.warn discards the message, but this WeakSet still records the tool. A later request with logging enabled cannot show its fallback warning. Check whether the logger's errors category is enabled before recording the tool, so “once” means once emitted.
