After a reload with persistence: true, a chat UI has no way to show how long each assistant turn took. The run store has startedAt and finishedAt, but they never reach the client. This PR adds an opt-in includeRuns to reconstructChat. With it, each assistant message of a finished run gets the run's timings on metadata.tanstack.run, so useChat can render a "Worked for Xs" label with no client change.

🎯 Changes

  • withPersistence: on save, it tags the assistant messages the current run added with metadata.tanstack.run = { id }. It records ctx.messages.length at onStart and tags only messages after that index, so messages from earlier runs (or stored before this change) are never re-tagged.
  • reconstructChat({ includeRuns: true }):
    • Returns a top-level runs list of finished runs (runId, status, startedAt, finishedAt), read through the existing optional runs.listByThread.
    • Adds startedAt and finishedAt into metadata.tanstack.run on each tagged assistant message of those runs.
  • @tanstack/ai: TanStackMessageMetadata.run type, and uiMessageToModelMessages / uiMessagesToWire keep run.id (not the timings), the same way they keep runId. Without this, the server-side merge would replace stored messages with incoming copies that lost the tag.
  • runPersistenceConformance (testkit): a new checks option with two opt-in checks. 'messages.metadata' checks that loadThread returns message metadata as saved. 'runs.listByThread.state' checks that listByThread returns each run's current status and finishedAt after update. Both are off by default, so an adapter that passed before still passes. The memory and sandbox snapshot stores opt in.
  • Docs: "Show how long each turn took" in the client persistence guide, and "Turn on the newer checks" in the build-your-own-adapter guide.

Why a new run.id key instead of runId: reconstructChat treats an assistant message with runId as a subagent host row and replaces its text with the cards. Tagging normal replies with runId broke two subagent tests, so the tag uses its own key.

Not in this PR: threads saved before this version have no run.id tags. They get only the top-level runs list, not per-message timings.

✅ Checklist

  • I have followed the steps in the Contributing guide.
  • I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
  • I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
  • Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
  • Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Testing

Commands run

  • New tests, each run before its code change and failing:
    • reconstruct.test.ts › "lists finished runs with their timings when includeRuns is set": expected undefined to deeply equal [ { runId: 'r1', … } ]
    • with-persistence.test.ts › "tags the assistant messages each run adds with its run id": expected [ undefined, undefined, undefined ] to deeply equal [ undefined, 'r1', 'r2' ] (the first undefined is a message stored before, which must stay untagged)
    • message-converters.test.ts and ag-ui-wire.test.ts › "keeps the run id and drops the run timings": fail without the two converter lines.
  • After the change: all pass.
  • test:lib, test:types, test:oxlint, build for @tanstack/ai and @tanstack/ai-persistence: pass, including every subagent persistence test.
  • E2E: new persistence-durability.spec.ts › "reconstructChat with includeRuns returns run timings (issue ai-persistence: expose finished-run timings (startedAt/finishedAt) in reconstructChat #1061)". It runs a real chat through withPersistence, then checks the runs list and the stamp on the assistant message. --grep "sandbox|persistence|subagent|1061|join-run" → 27 passed.
  • sandbox-file-persistence.spec.ts asserts the exact stored transcript, so its expectation now includes metadata: { tanstack: { run: { id: 'recover' } } } on the assistant message.
  • Conformance checks, verified with a temporary test file (not committed): the memory store passes both checks; an old-style call with no checks reports both as skipped; a store that drops metadata and returns stale listByThread rows fails both. The sandbox snapshot store passes both (56 passed).
  • pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e test:types, pnpm test:docs: pass.
  • I did not run the full pnpm test:pr.

Manual test

  1. Use a server GET that returns reconstructChat(persistence, request, { includeRuns: true }), and useChat({ persistence: true }) on the client.
  2. Send a message and wait for the reply. Reload the page.
  3. Read message.metadata?.tanstack?.run on the assistant message: { id, startedAt, finishedAt }.

How this PR makes testing easy

Unit tests in packages/ai-persistence/tests/ and packages/ai/tests/, plus the E2E test above.

Fixes #1061

Compatibility

Additive for store authors and apps:

  • No store interface changes. includeRuns uses the existing optional runs.listByThread. A store without it returns no runs, and nothing throws.
  • Types only gain optional fields.
  • The conformance suite adds no required checks. The new ones are opt-in.
  • chatParamsFromRequestBody only requires metadata to be an object, so the extra key is accepted.
  • No provider adapter sends message metadata upstream.

Risk / rollback

Medium-low. Stored assistant messages now carry metadata.tanstack.run.id. Code that compares stored transcripts exactly sees the new key (the one E2E spec that does is updated). includeRuns is off by default, so the hydrate payload only changes by that small tag. Revert the PR to undo. Tags already written stay in stored threads, and nothing else reads them.

Public API change

Before

return reconstructChat(persistence, request)
// message.metadata.tanstack has no run timings

After

return reconstructChat(persistence, request, { includeRuns: true })
// assistant message: message.metadata.tanstack.run = { id, startedAt, finishedAt }
// body.runs = [{ runId, status, startedAt, finishedAt }]

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Restored conversations can optionally include completed-run IDs, statuses, and timing details. Assistant messages retain the ID of the run that produced them and, when available, its start and finish times.
    • Added optional persistence conformance checks for preserving message metadata and reporting updated run status and finish times.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the persistence guides with details on restoring run information and enabling the new conformance checks.

Add an opt-in includeRuns option. The response then has runs: the thread's finished runs with runId, status, startedAt, and finishedAt, read through the existing optional runs.listByThread.

Refs #1061
withPersistence records the run that produced each assistant message on metadata.tanstack.run.id, and the message converters keep that id on the client round trip. reconstructChat with includeRuns adds the finished run's startedAt and finishedAt to it, so a client can show how long each turn took after a reload.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Persistence now records run IDs on eligible assistant messages. reconstructChat can optionally return terminal runs and add their timing data to matching messages. Message conversion preserves run IDs, and opt-in conformance checks cover message metadata and run-list state.

Changes

Run timing reconstruction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Run metadata and message conversion
packages/ai/src/types.ts, packages/ai/src/activities/chat/messages.ts, packages/ai/src/utilities/ag-ui-wire.ts, packages/ai/tests/*
TanStack message metadata supports run IDs and optional timestamps. Assistant metadata rebuilding and message conversion preserve the run ID. Tests check that converters omit timing fields from their output.
Tag assistant messages when saving
packages/ai-persistence/src/middleware.ts, packages/ai-persistence/tests/with-persistence.test.ts, testing/e2e/tests/sandbox-file-persistence.spec.ts
The persistence middleware records the first message index for each run and tags eligible assistant messages at interrupt and completion saves. Tests cover multiple turns and the automatic-conversation expectation.
Return run timings from reconstruction
packages/ai-persistence/src/reconstruct.ts, packages/ai-persistence/tests/reconstruct.test.ts, testing/e2e/src/routes/api.persistence-durability.ts, testing/e2e/tests/persistence-durability.spec.ts, docs/persistence/client-persistence.md, docs/config.json, .changeset/reconstruct-chat-runs.md
With includeRuns, reconstruction returns terminal runs and adds their timing metadata to matching assistant messages. Tests and documentation cover the option, its store requirements, and the reconstructed response.
Add opt-in persistence conformance checks
packages/ai-persistence/src/testkit/conformance.ts, packages/ai-persistence/tests/memory.conformance.test.ts, packages/ai-sandbox/tests/checkpoint-store.conformance.test.ts, docs/persistence/build-your-own-adapter.md, docs/config.json
The conformance suite adds opt-in checks for message metadata round trips and run-list state. The memory and checkpoint-store conformance calls enable these checks, and documentation describes their use.

Resolve the unbounded run list on paginated requests and preserve run timing for failed-stream snapshots before merging, unless the pagination cost is explicitly accepted.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 61596

The opt-in feature can make a paginated chat-history request load and return every finished run for that thread. This creates a potential availability cost for long-lived chats. No cross-thread access or authorization bypass was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Opt-in reconstruction reads and returns the full terminal-run history even when the caller requests a page of messages, so a long-lived thread can defeat the intended per-request work and response bound.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The established new exposure is per requested thread: enabling run history adds work and response data proportional to that thread’s terminal runs, including on paginated requests. No cross-thread run lookup was observed.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller able to repeatedly request an includeRuns-enabled reconstruction of a long-lived thread could impose full run-history reads despite requesting only a small message page. Effective attackability depends on the host route and store implementation, which were not established for production.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Existing run IDs in assistant metadata survive conversion and are not overwritten by the tagger; reconstruction matches them against terminal runs from the requested thread. Whether an untrusted client can submit such assistant metadata to a production route remains unverified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The completion path writes the tagged transcript before recording completion, reducing the chance of presenting a completed run without its final transcript. Streaming snapshots and concurrent full-thread overwrites have separate semantics; production conflict handling was not verified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bound or page run-history retrieval separately from message pagination, and keep thread authorization at every route enabling includeRuns.

Add an explicitly bounded run-history option.

limit bounds only messages. With includeRuns, reconstructChat calls listByThread(threadId), which returns the thread's runs without a bound. reconstructChat then returns every terminal run in runs, regardless of the message page. Each small page can therefore load and serialize the full run history.

Keep the existing includeRuns full-thread semantics. Do not silently make runs page-local. If page-local run data is needed, add a separate bounded run query or option with its own pagination contract.

Preserve stored run IDs when merging matching messages.

mergeStoredMessages replaces a stored message with the incoming message when both have the same id. An untagged live-client assistant message can therefore remove the stored metadata.tanstack.run.id. Because that message is before firstRunMessage, runMessages does not restore the tag on the next save. includeRuns then cannot attach its timings. Preserve the stored run ID when the incoming matching message has no run tag. The current two-turn test does not cover this case because it passes the already-tagged afterFirst transcript.

mergeStoredMessages so replacing a stored message with a matching incoming

Reuse the existing runTagOf and withRunTag helpers, and retain the incoming

runPersistenceConformance gets a checks option. 'messages.metadata' checks that stores keep message metadata, and 'runs.listByThread.state' checks that listByThread returns current status and finishedAt. Both are off by default, so existing adapters keep passing. The memory and sandbox snapshot stores opt in.

Preserve the run tag on streaming snapshots.

snapshotStreaming bypasses runMessages, so the synthetic assistant message has no metadata.tanstack.run.id. A mid-stream failure can leave this snapshot persisted. reconstructChat then cannot attach run timing to the reloaded message.

Wrap the synthetic message with withRunTag before saving it.
