Execute each embedded donut child once and tag executed children (#226) - #236
Fixes#226: an embedded #[Embed] child of a #[DonutCache]/#[CacheableResponse] page
previously ran twice per request - once when onGet() read it from the body, once more
when DonutRequest::__toString() rendered it as a hole - causing MISS/HIT divergence for
non-idempotent children. OnceRequest wraps every embedded Request so both paths share
one execution. A child read only into the body (never substituted as a hole) now has its
tag added to the stored template's own storage tags, so purging that child invalidates the
page instead of leaving a stale shell.
OnceRequest: memoizing AbstractRequest wrapper; withQuery/addQuery/link* discard
the memo and resync, so an explicit mid-onGet() requery still runs again.
EmbedOnceInterceptor: plain bindInterceptor (not priority), matched to #[Embed]-bearing onGet()s only - relies on Ray.Aop's onion ordering to always run after EmbedInterceptor
regardless of module install order (tested both orders); warns and no-ops if it ever runs
too early.
DonutChildExecutions/DonutChildExecutionsInterface: per-request WeakMap registry so DonutRepository can find which children ran but were never rendered as a hole.
Also fixes ResourceBodyEvaluator::materialize() crashing (AssertionError) on an embedded BEAR\Async\AsyncRequest - its jsonSerialize() answers a decoded array, not the memoized ResourceObject the evaluator assumed. Such a request is now left unmaterialized instead of
asserting; full async support stays out of scope.
Upgrade note
Ray.Aop's woven class name (and so the ETag, crc32($ro::class . ...)) changes once, on
first request, for a #[CacheableResponse] class or method that also declares #[Embed] -
it is now woven with a new interceptor. Verified by execution: a page with no #[Embed]
keeps its stock woven class/ETag unchanged, and a #[DonutCache] page never carries an
ETag at all (doPutDonut() never calls saveEtag()), so neither is affected.
Wraps every embedded #[Embed] request in a donut page with OnceRequest so onGet() reading the body and DonutRequest rendering it as a hole share one execution instead of running the child twice (previous MISS/HIT divergence for non-idempotent children). A child that only ran into the body - never substituted as a hole - now has its tag added to the stored template's own storage tags, so purging it invalidates the page instead of leaving a stale shell (bearsunday#226).
Also fixes ResourceBodyEvaluator::materialize() crashing on an embedded BEAR\Async\AsyncRequest (or any AbstractRequest subclass whose jsonSerialize() does not answer the memoized ResourceObject): it is now left unmaterialized instead of asserting.
CHANGELOG: documents the fix and the one-time ETag churn it causes for a #[CacheableResponse] class/method that also declares #[Embed] (Ray.Aop weaves a new interceptor into such classes); verified by execution that a page with no #[Embed] keeps its stock ETag and that #[DonutCache] pages never carry an ETag at all.

Walkthrough
The change adds memoized execution for embedded requests, tracks child executions for donut template tags, and preserves non-resource request shapes during resource-body evaluation.
OnceRequest reuses a child result until its query or links change. The interceptor wraps and registers eligible embedded requests. Tests cover request mutations, interceptor installation order, and warning behavior.
Render children and store their tags src/DonutRepository.php, src/DonutRequest.php, tests/OnceRequestBehaviorTest.php, tests/Fake/fake-app/src/Resource/Page/Html/*, tests/Fake/fake-app/var/templates/Page/Html/*, CHANGELOG.md, composer.json
Donut rendering reuses child execution results. Stored template tags and live response keys include tags from executed children that were not rendered as holes. Tests cover execution, cache invalidation, and rendered output. The bear/resource requirement is updated.
Body evaluation clones an AbstractRequest result only when serialization returns a ResourceObject; otherwise, it preserves the request. A test covers a non-ResourceObject serialized value.
bearsunday/BEAR.QueryRepository#231 — This PR changes the same DonutRequest::__toString() path and uses the uncacheable-mark and gate contracts introduced there.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #226 requires an executed embedded child’s URI tag to invalidate the parent donut template even when the child is read into the body and is not rendered as a hole. DonutRepository::unrenderedChildren() collects executed, unrendered generations, and templateKeys() adds their URI tags. The tests cover body-only tagging, untouched embeds, purge invalidation, and execution generations.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The PR includes behavior that is not required by issue #226. ResourceBodyEvaluator::materialize() changes handling for BEAR\Async\AsyncRequest, which is a separate evaluator behavior. DonutRepository::childTags() also copies each child’s complete Header::SURROGATE_KEY value, and the PR adds unrendered-child tags to the live response header. Issue #226 limits the proposal to direct child URI tags on the donut template; grandchild dependency propagation and rendered-hole behavior are outside that scope.
Resolution
Remove the AsyncRequest materialization change from this PR, or link it to a separate coding requirement. Limit the #226 change to direct executed-child URI tags on the stored donut template. Do not propagate a child’s complete surrogate-key header or add separate live-response tagging unless a linked issue requires those behaviors.

EmbedOnceInterceptor::swap() guard reordered (checks is_array($body) before the declared-rel loop, reintroducing the dead-code bug the design review caught) → EmbedOnceInterceptorWarningTest::testWarnsAndLeavesTheBodyUntouchedWhenItRunsBeforeEmbedInterceptor fails (0 warnings instead of 1).
EmbedOnceInterceptor binding changed to bindPriorityInterceptor → 6 failures: both install-order tests, plus OnceRequestBehaviorTest's once/requery/body-only/purge tests (interceptor now runs before EmbedInterceptor, so it never sees the embedded Requests).
DonutRepository::executedChildTags()wasRendered() exclusion removed → 4 failures in the pre-existing DonutDependencyEvidenceTest (testDonutCacheKeepsTheChildTagsOutOfTheStore and 3 others): a rendered hole's tag leaks into the template's own storage tags.
executedChildTags()hasExecuted() check removed (forces a run just to read the tag) → testBodyOnlyChildTagsTheStoredTemplateAndNeverTouchedEmbedDoesNot fails: the never-touched unused embed now runs (Counter::$calls 1 instead of 0).
DonutRequest::__toString()markRendered() call removed → same 4 DonutDependencyEvidenceTest failures as Fix readme #4 (rendered-hole tag leaks into storage).
ResourceBodyEvaluator::materialize() reverted to the blind assert($memo instanceof ResourceObject) → testAsyncLikeRequestIsLeftUnmaterializedInsteadOfCrashing fails with the AssertionError the fix exists to avoid.
ETag upgrade-note fact-check (by execution, same-worktree src-only swap so Ray.Aop's woven-class naming is comparable)
Backed up src/, swapped in a pristine 4b7b135 checkout, cleared the Ray.Di compile dir, ran, restored - repeated for the branch src/. Confirmed the swap-and-restore left the worktree identical both times (diff -rq + full green phpunit rerun after final restore).
(a) #[CacheableResponse]+#[Embed] (class-level, PageSurrogateKey): woven class and ETag both change (PageSurrogateKey1734520508/ETag "3043481522" stock → PageSurrogateKey433608482/ETag "2416732453" branch) - reproducible (reran stock twice, identical both times) and expected: a new interceptor is now woven into this class.
(b) #[DonutCache]+marking hole (DonutCacheWithUnstorableHole): woven class changes (has #[Embed] too) but no ETag header exists in either stock or branch - Cache-Control: private, no-store / Pragma: no-cache only. Confirmed structurally too: DonutRepository::doPutDonut() never calls saveEtag()/saveView() - no #[DonutCache] page ever gets an ETag, marking or not.
(c) #[CacheableResponse], no #[Embed] (NoContentPage): woven class identical stock vs branch (NoContentPage3331611547 both times) - the #[Embed]-gated matcher correctly excludes it.
Cross-checked against real BeMart execution (vendor src/ swapped in ~/git/BeMart-wt/qr-118-trial, full run.sh against eccubedb_test, restored byte-identical afterward):
Page\Index (#[CacheableResponse], no #[Embed]): 01-top-1.headers byte-identical stock vs branch, ETag: "3140680659" unchanged.
Page\Product (#[DonutCache], marking hole via CartEntryForm's csrf_field()): identical Cache-Control: private, no-store / Pragma: no-cache, no ETag, stock and branch.
Canonical (normalized) diff trial-donut vs this branch's run: only 3 .hitmiss files differ, each losing exactly 2 CACHE_HIT app://self/product/stock lines - the double-execution this PR fixes. .body.sha256 identical everywhere.
BeMart smoke
bash ~/git/bemart-e2e/run.sh ~/git/BeMart-wt/qr-118-trial ~/git/bemart-e2e/out/trial-donut-once-request (vendor src/ swapped to this branch, restored immediately after, verified byte-identical to a clean 4b7b135 checkout). Diff against baseline trial-donut (excluding _raw/, which carries per-run CSRF/session noise normalize.php doesn't touch): only the 3 .hitmiss files above differ, exactly as expected.

…orted release
bear/resource's lowest allowed release (per this package's own ^1.16.1 floor) declares AbstractRequest::jsonSerialize(): ResourceObject (not mixed) and ResourceInterface has no newRequest(): both are PHP class-declaration-time incompatibilities, not runtime ones, so the affected tests now detect the gap via Reflection/method_exists and skip with a stated reason instead of fatal-erroring the whole PHPUnit process on class autoload.

method_exists() needs a use-function import (cs), and phpstan's own bear/resource stub always sees newRequest() declared, so the version check is annotated accordingly.
CI update: all PHPUnit matrix legs green (ubuntu/macos, PHP 8.2-8.5, both highest and lowest dependency resolutions), plus cs/PHPStan/Psalm/PHPMD/ComposerRequireChecker all green. Two fixup commits were needed: c4b8dca (the lowest-allowed bear/resource declares AbstractRequest::jsonSerialize(): ResourceObject, not mixed, and has no ResourceInterface::newRequest() - both are class-declaration-time incompatibilities for two test fixtures, now guarded with a Reflection/method_exists check that skips with a stated reason instead of fatal-erroring the whole PHPUnit process) and d269696 (cs/phpstan fixups for that guard). Windows legs and Scrutinizer were still running at last check.
…quest-matching __get()
Review findings on bearsunday#226:
1. A withQuery()/addQuery()/link*() call discarded OnceRequest's execution history, so only the LAST generation's tag ever reached the stored template and the live response's SurrogateKeys - purging an earlier generation's own tag left the page serving a stale cache_hit. OnceRequest now keeps every generation (ResourceObject + rendered flag), and DonutRepository::unrenderedChildren() reads all of them instead of just the current one.
2. On the doPutStatic()/#[CacheableResponse] path, an unrendered child's tag reached templateKeys() but never SurrogateKeys, so the stored view/ETag carried only the page's own tag - purging the child left a stale cache_hit even though the #[DonutCache] template was correctly tagged. Fixed in both doPutStatic() and doPutDonut() (the latter never stores a server-side ETag/view at all, but its live response's CDN Surrogate-Key header had the same gap).
3. OnceRequest::__get() now mirrors Request::__get()'s own DSL (eager/lazy sets on both wrapper and inner request and returns ; code/headers/body read from this class's own memo; anything else throws OutOfRangeException) - AbstractRequest's default __get() would otherwise answer through its own separate private memo.
Fable validated ^1.22.4 as the effective minimum that works on the production path (including hole rendering) on PHP 8.2; the old ^1.16.1 floor is replaced.
CHANGELOG wording: 'reused until its query or links change' rather than 'at most once per request' (the memo IS discarded and the child DOES run again after a mid-onGet() withQuery()/addQuery()/link*() call - see the OnceRequest generation-tracking commit); and toned the async wording down to what the fix actually does (the evaluator no longer crashes on an AsyncRequest-shaped child; async support itself stays out of scope).
@koriym Review round fixes, pushed as two commits (be7450a, d663b90), head d663b90fbeb277c8b64c9204b1eac5535f09b12d.
1+2. HIGH (Kimi): execution generations / #[CacheableResponse] view tags
OnceRequest now keeps every execution generation ($generations/$rendered, parallel lists), not just the current one - a withQuery()/addQuery()/link*() call no longer discards history, only the per-generation memo. DonutRepository::unrenderedChildren() reads every generation via the new OnceRequest::generations() and tags each unrendered one - the hole exclusion is kept (only the latest generation can ever become a hole). Both doPutStatic() and doPutDonut() now also call $keys->addTag($childRo) for each unrendered child, so the live response's own SurrogateKeys (and so the saved ETag/view on the #[CacheableResponse] path, and the CDN Surrogate-Key header on both paths) carry the tag too, not only the stored #[DonutCache] template.
Mutations (broke → right test failed → restored → green):
resync() clearing $generations/$rendered → testEveryGenerationTagsTheStoredTemplateAndPurgingTheFirstOneInvalidatesThePage fails (purging the pre-withQuery() generation's tag left a stale cache_hit).
Added, mirroring Request::__get() exactly: eager/lazy sets $in on both the wrapper and the inner request and returns $this; code/headers/body read from this class's own memo (not AbstractRequest's separate private one); anything else throws OutOfRangeException.
Mutations: forwarding to the inner request removed → testGetEagerSetsInOnBothWrapperAndInnerRequestAndReturnsItself fails · exception swallowed → testGetUnknownPropertyThrowsOutOfRangeException fails · 'headers' dropped from the known-property list → testGetHeadersAlsoReadsFromTheSameMemoizedExecution fails (this was the missing assertion Fable's M5 found - code/body were tested, headers was not).
4. Floor: bear/resource → ^1.22.4
Raised as instructed. One empirical note: under this repo's own dev-dependency graph, madapaja/twig-module ^2.6 already requires bear/resource ^1.23, so --prefer-lowest resolves to 1.23.0 either way (verified both before and after the floor change, in a full scratch composer update --prefer-lowest copy) - the two CI-only guards from the previous round (AbstractRequest::jsonSerialize(): ResourceObject not mixed; no ResourceInterface::newRequest()) are consequently still needed at that resolved version, matching the "keep a skip if a dev-only API is genuinely absent" escape clause - they were not dropped.
5. LOW: CHANGELOG wording + missing assertion
"reused until its query or links change" replaces "at most once per request" (accurate now that a mid-onGet() query/link change does re-execute). Async wording narrowed to only what the fix does. Missing assertion (headers, above) added and mutation-proved.
Note: a mid-course correction
An earlier pass of this round ran a broad composer update, which also bumped the trackedvendor-bin/tools/composer.lock (PHPStan/Psalm) and surfaced two unrelated PHPStan false positives in tests/RefreshAnnotatedCommandTest.php (a file this PR never otherwise touches). Caught before pushing: vendor-bin/tools/composer.lock was restored via git checkout + composer bin tools install, confirmed phpstan was clean again with the restored tool versions, and the two @phpstan-ignore comments plus the explanatory note were reverted - tests/RefreshAnnotatedCommandTest.php now has a zero-line diff from 1.x.
Gate
vendor/bin/phpunit: 499 tests, 1476 assertions, OK (13 skipped - the two bear/resource-floor guards from the previous round, both confirmed still necessary above, plus 11 pre-existing environment skips). composer cs / phpstan analyse / psalm --show-info=false / phpmd: all clean. Coverage (pcov, --coverage-filter=src): 100.00% Classes (111/111) / Methods (319/319) / Lines (1520/1520).

Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
Mutation-tested __get() by removing the whole override: code/headers/body still passed, since AbstractRequest's own default __get() already funnels through this class's overridden __invoke() for any unknown property - only eager/lazy and the OutOfRangeException are genuinely new behavior. Corrected the docblock to say so, rather than implying the whole override fixes a bug. Also fixed a run-on sentence in DonutChildExecutionsInterface's own docblock.
@koriym BeMart smoke re-verified after the review-round commits (was missing from the prior report, per review feedback - thank you for catching it).
bash ~/git/bemart-e2e/run.sh ~/git/BeMart-wt/qr-118-trial <out> with vendor src/ swapped to head 14f8c9406b05c549047200927e66714d31aca077, backed up before and restored byte-identical after (diff -rq against a clean ~/git/qr-release4b7b135 checkout, confirmed both before the swap and after the restore).
Canonical diff (.status/.headers/.body.sha256/.body.rules/.hitmiss, excluding _raw) vs the trial-donut baseline: only the same 3 .hitmiss files as the original report, each still losing exactly the 2 duplicate CACHE_HIT app://self/product/stock lines the once-execution fix removes.
Specifically checked, exhaustively, for the concern this round's new live-SurrogateKeys tag propagation (doPutStatic/doPutDonut's $keys->addTag() loop) could have changed:
Every one of the 25 steps' .headers files: byte-identical, zero diffs.
Every ETag header across all 25 steps: identical, zero diffs.
Every .body.sha256: identical, zero diffs.
No regression: BeMart's real pages don't trigger the new code path at all - every embed in this app (Page\Product's stock/cartEntryForm, CartEntryForm's own stock) is rendered as a hole, not read body-only-and-discarded, so unrenderedChildren() is empty for every page here and the new $keys->addTag() loop has nothing to add. The loop is exercised and mutation-proved by the unit/behavior tests (BodyOnlyChildCacheableResponse fixture) instead, where a real body-only shape exists.

Merge the persisted storage tags when refreshDonut() re-saves the view.
ResourceDonut::refresh() rebuilds the surrogate-key header from the page URI and rendered holes. It does not include ResourceDonut::getStorageTags(). Therefore, saveView() can store the refreshed view without unrendered child tags. A later purge of such a child can leave that view reachable and serve stale content.

Summary
Fixes #226: an embedded
#[Embed]child of a#[DonutCache]/#[CacheableResponse]pagepreviously ran twice per request - once when
onGet()read it from the body, once morewhen
DonutRequest::__toString()rendered it as a hole - causing MISS/HIT divergence fornon-idempotent children.
OnceRequestwraps every embeddedRequestso both paths shareone execution. A child read only into the body (never substituted as a hole) now has its
tag added to the stored template's own storage tags, so purging that child invalidates the
page instead of leaving a stale shell.
OnceRequest: memoizingAbstractRequestwrapper;withQuery/addQuery/link*discardthe memo and resync, so an explicit mid-
onGet()requery still runs again.EmbedOnceInterceptor: plainbindInterceptor(not priority), matched to#[Embed]-bearingonGet()s only - relies on Ray.Aop's onion ordering to always run afterEmbedInterceptorregardless of module install order (tested both orders); warns and no-ops if it ever runs
too early.
DonutChildExecutions/DonutChildExecutionsInterface: per-requestWeakMapregistry soDonutRepositorycan find which children ran but were never rendered as a hole. Also fixes
ResourceBodyEvaluator::materialize()crashing (AssertionError) on an embeddedBEAR\Async\AsyncRequest- itsjsonSerialize()answers a decoded array, not the memoizedResourceObjectthe evaluator assumed. Such a request is now left unmaterialized instead ofasserting; full async support stays out of scope.
Upgrade note
Ray.Aop's woven class name (and so the ETag,
crc32($ro::class . ...)) changes once, onfirst request, for a
#[CacheableResponse]class or method that also declares#[Embed]-it is now woven with a new interceptor. Verified by execution: a page with no
#[Embed]keeps its stock woven class/ETag unchanged, and a
#[DonutCache]page never carries anETag at all (
doPutDonut()never callssaveEtag()), so neither is affected.Checklist
