This is probably related to #314 @crusaderky

EDIT: and indeed, $ git revert e600449 makes tests pass again.

This blocks the release 1.12 process. Unless there's a quick fix for the test, my options are:

    • revert ENH: Simplify CuPy asarray and to_device #314 in for array-api-compat==1.12. Need to re-test scipy because the vendored scipy version includes this PR.
    • ignore the test failure and proceed with releasing 1.12 with a known issue for cupy.

The first one is just an issue in the tests. The code raises ValueError.
The second test didn't exist before #314 so of course reverting the PR "fixes" the failure.
I'm on holiday until tomorrow and can't debug them from here.

What version of cupy do you have installed? What version of the cuda stack? How many GPUs?

Re-reading the error message: you have 2+ GPUs, for which the test is faulty. I don't think there is a problem with the code, it's just a test issue.
