SRTP committed overload does not match expected overload #12064
SRTP committed overload does not match expected overload
Minimized repro:
typeCaseName=static memberToCaseName<'a,'bwhen'a:null>(value:'a)= failwith "just here to force delayed resolution."[<CompilerMessage("CaseName.ToCaseName",0)>]static memberToCaseName(value:'a)=letcase,_ = Reflection.FSharpValue.GetUnionFields(value, typeof<'a>)in case.Name
static member inlineInvoke(value:'a):string =let inlinecall(other:^M,value:^I)=((^Ior^M):(static memberToCaseName:^I-> string) value)
call (Unchecked.defaultof<CaseName>, value)typeDU=| Case
// When this method exists, we emit DU.ToCaseName as a warning, // yet we execute the code belonging to CaseName.ToCaseName[<CompilerMessage("DU.ToCaseName",0)>]static memberToCaseName(x:DU)=match x with| Case ->"Customized"[<EntryPoint>]letmain argv =
System.Console.WriteLine(CaseName.Invoke(Case))// writes "Case" but warns "DU.ToCaseName"0
Given the overload tiebreakers you would expect a double-barreled SRTP call to pick the concrete method over the generic one. It kind of seems like this is happening (the warning betrays that much) however when you run/inspect the emitted code it actually executes the generic method.
This issue appears to be fixed in recent versions of the F# compiler. SRTP now correctly selects the more specific DU.ToCaseName overload over the generic CaseName.ToCaseName — the wrong overload is no longer committed.
Verified with current compiler:
typeCaseName=static memberToCaseName<'a,'bwhen'a:null>(value:'a)= failwith "delay"static memberToCaseName(value:'a)=letcase,_ = Reflection.FSharpValue.GetUnionFields(value, typeof<'a>)in case.Name
static member inlineInvoke(value:'a):string =let inlinecall(other:^M,value:^I)=((^Ior^M):(static memberToCaseName:^I-> string) value)
call (Unchecked.defaultof<_>, value)typeDU=| Case
static memberToCaseName(x:DU)=match x with Case ->"Customized"
printfn "%s"(CaseName.Invoke(Case))// Output: Customized ✅ (previously: "Case" — wrong overload was selected)
Note: The original repro used Unchecked.defaultof without explicit type argument; in modern F# this now requires Unchecked.defaultof<_> (FS0685).

My repro is standalone, just sending it to fsi in F#7 and calling
f()is enough to see the bug is still there.@NinoFloris indeed it looks definitely related

Issue persists on latest main (F# 11.0, FSharp.Core 10.0.101).

Expected:
Customized. The genericCaseName.ToCaseNameis still selected over the specificDU.ToCaseNameoverload.
