📚 Description

companion piece to work happening in nuxt - currently we hard-expect nitro, which is tricky if the version of nitro might change

this makes us more resilient to different versions, or even a pure vite spa build

Install footprint and published tarball

Each version installed on its own into an empty project with nothing but @nuxt/cli as a dependency, so the tree is exactly the CLI and its transitive dependencies. npm cache is warm and the registry is only consulted for metadata, so install wall time is indicative, not a network benchmark.

Interleaved runs on a shared runner: trust the deltas, not the absolute timings. The dev, restart and build suites run locally via pnpm bench:cli.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CLI now resolves declared server builds and normalized output paths without requiring Nitro. Build, generate, analyze, preview, and development flows use this metadata. The CLI supports --target with --preset as a hidden alias. Client-only builds can serve static output with client-entry fallback. Documentation and unit tests cover the updated behavior.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 366de

This change broadens builds and previews beyond a server runtime, but dynamic output paths can cause locking and recorded metadata to refer to different directories, while missing-server errors can identify the wrong runtime. The PR is otherwise mergeable with explicit owner awareness and follow-up for these bounded correctness and diagnostic issues.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Resolve the final output directory at the builder finalization point.

Line 138 evaluates dir before buildNuxt. A builder can change its output directory after nuxt.ready(). The output lock can then protect the old directory, and meta.json can record the wrong directory.

Resolve the directory after the builder finalizes its output configuration. Keep the output lock associated with that final directory.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Pass the known no-server state to getServerBuilderName.

This branch already proves that nuxt.server is absent. Without false, an unconfigured builder is reported as nitro instead of unknown.

Proposed fix
- `The ${styleText('cyan', getServerBuilderName(this.#currentNuxt))} server builder did not provide a dev server.\n`
+ `The ${styleText('cyan', getServerBuilderName(this.#currentNuxt, false))} server builder did not provide a dev server.\n`

Carefully review the code before committing. Ensure that it accurately replaces the highlighted code, contains no missing lines, and has no issues with indentation. Thoroughly test & benchmark the code to ensure it meets the requirements.
