ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — The PR changes the desktop artifact's default publishing behavior, disabling inferred publishing and update metadata for local and preview builds while preserving explicit GitHub and mock-update paths. The behavior is narrowly scoped, but the default change and an unresolved mock-update coverage gap warrant human validation. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
The new default is tested for preview and GitHub configurations, but not for mockUpdates. Add a createBuildConfig case with mock updates enabled and no repository configured that asserts the generic publisher is retained, so a future regression cannot leave the new publish: null default active for local update testing.

Without an explicit `publish: null`, electron-builder infers a GitHub publisher from an ambient GH_TOKEN/GITHUB_TOKEN, fails to resolve owner/repo from the staged app, and crashes building update metadata with "Cannot read properties of null (reading 'channel')". CI always sets GITHUB_REPOSITORY, so it keeps the real GitHub config. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…e too Preview versions bypass the whole publish block, so they still left publish unset and hit the same electron-builder crash with an ambient token. Make null the default in the config literal and let the GitHub and mock-update branches override it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

What Changed
Running a local desktop build such as
vp run dist:desktop:dmg:arm64crashes at the very end whenGH_TOKENorGITHUB_TOKENis exported in the shell, which is the normal state for anyone who usesgh:The app, zip, and blockmaps are already written by then, so the failure is easy to misread as an environment problem. CI never sees it because it always sets
GITHUB_REPOSITORY.The build script now sets
publishto an explicitnullwhen no update repository is configured and mock updates are off. The GitHub and mock-update branches are unchanged. Two tests cover the fallback and the CI path. Why
createBuildConfigleftpublishunset in that case. Withpublishunset, electron-builder infers a GitHub publisher from the ambient token, then fails to resolve owner/repo because the staged app has no.gitand its generatedpackage.jsonhas norepositoryfield. The resolved config becomes[null]and the update-info step dereferences it.--publish neverdoes not help, since electron-builder still resolves publishers to build update metadata. An explicitnulldisables publishing and update metadata outright, which is what a local build wants.Checklist
