A native attachment upload that never settles can hold the mobile outbox across every thread. Bound each transfer to three minutes, reject with a terminal timeout, and abort its native signal so the existing failure path can restore the message and release the shared dispatch slot.

Start the deadline after temporary-file staging, recheck cancellation before upload, and ignore progress after abort. Timeout rejection happens before native abort so a synchronous cancellation error cannot replace it. A promise race enforces the bound even when native cancellation never settles. Background-session mode is preserved.

Based on @deathemperor’s original fix in #12610. Contributor commits are retained, with current main merged into the branch.

Verification:

  • Four focused attachment/outbox suites: 123 → 126 passing tests. The original timeout test was replaced with two native-abort cases; one outbox recovery case and one staging/cancellation case were added in existing files.
  • Both timeout regressions fail against main at 180,000ms and pass with this fix. Tests cover synchronous native abort rejection, ignored abort, late completion/progress, cleanup, cancellation, restoring the failed message, and delivering another thread’s queued message.
  • Targeted lint/format, mobile tsc-rs --noEmit, and git diff --check pass.
  • Native boundaries are mocked. No iOS/Android device, macOS, Windows, or Electron desktop verification was performed. A human should verify iOS native cancellation and subsequent delivery through a tunnel, including background/resume behavior.
  • JavaScript timers enforce the deadline while JavaScript runs; they cannot expire a transfer while the app is suspended. This bounds transfer time, not local staging, signed URL minting, or cleanup RPCs. No UI appearance changed; automated behavior proof is used instead of screenshots.

Model and harness: tests by GPT-6-Astra, implementation by GPT-6.1-Sol; Codex in T3 Code. Independent reviews by Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol.

The outbox sends one message at a time, so a transfer that never settles
holds every queued reply and new thread behind it. Bound one transfer and
abort it at the bound; the outbox already returns a failed upload to the
composer with its error.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The PR adds a universal three-minute deadline and native cancellation behavior to the production attachment-upload path, with focused coverage for timeout, cleanup, and outbox recovery. Although the scope is small and the intent is clear, the unconditional timeout changes default upload behavior for all users.

Walkthrough

Attachment uploads now check cancellation after file preparation and enforce a 180-second timeout for native transfers. Tests cover cleanup after cancellation or timeout, and verify that the outbox restores a failed message to the draft and can deliver the next queued task.

Review: the abort could surface the native cancellation before the timeout
rejection settled, so the caller saw "Upload cancelled." for a timeout.
Settle the timeout first. The test's fake upload now rejects on abort at
once, which failed before this change.

Addressed in 8afdece.

Timeout error vs cancellation error (both bots): correct, and the hardened test proved it. With a fake upload that rejects on abort synchronously, the old order surfaced "Upload cancelled." for a timeout. The timer now settles the timeout rejection first, then aborts.

setTimeout does not run while the app is suspended (Macroscope): true, but nothing waits on the outbox lock while JavaScript is suspended, because the outbox is JavaScript too. When the app resumes, the timer fires and the bound applies. A native deadline would end an upload iOS is legitimately finishing in the background, which is the opposite of what the bound is for.

A bound by default rather than opt-in: the default is the bug. Every caller of this helper is a sender waiting on the result, and an unbounded wait holds the serialized outbox for every other message. There is no caller that wants no bound.

Upstream review of the same change (pingdotgg/t3code#12610): the abort
could surface the native cancellation before the timeout rejection
settled, so the caller saw "Upload cancelled." for a timeout. Settle the
timeout first. The test's fake upload now rejects on abort at once, which
failed before this change.

Taking over this one as maintainer for composer-chat-05. I will keep the upload bound focused, verify timeout/cancellation and outbox recovery, and report native iOS verification separately.

Dismissing prior approval to re-evaluate df8f207

Scoped test evidence for df8f207 against BASE 9077e818:

  • Ran the identical two 180,000 ms mocked-upload deadline cases on BASE first: both failed because the upload outcome remained unsettled. Both pass on HEAD, covering ignored abort and synchronous rejection on abort.
  • All four focused HEAD suites pass: 126/126 tests.
  • The cross-thread terminal-error recovery fixture passes on both revisions; this confirms existing slot-release behavior, rather than independently reproducing a newly fixed outbox regression.

Raw commands, logs, hashes, versions, and parent verification.

These tests use exact source revisions with a reused readonly dependency tree whose full lockfile differs. This is scoped mocked-Expo proof. Native iOS/Android transfer cancellation and background/resume remain unverified, as does a fully pinned dependency environment. The deadline bounds the byte transfer; it does not bound staging, URL minting, or cleanup RPCs. This does not establish full merge readiness.

This follows the existing maintainer takeover and separate native-verification plan. Assessed with trusted contribution policy.

updated the original branch to 17f96d33017b37efcc4970f69dd8e698899c7f56 by merging current main and resolving the test conflict. contributor commits and the focused three-file fix are retained. no extra production changes were needed: the timeout race, rejection-before-abort ordering, staging cancellation guard, and late-progress suppression are already the smallest correct mechanism here.

verification this run:

  • reproduced both timeout failures against current main: no outcome after 180,000 ms.
  • both changed suites pass, 45 tests. nearby outbox suites also pass.
  • blacksmith vp run check:changed against current main passes format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, and changed-file tests.
  • two independent code reviews approve this head without findings. ci is still pending.

@deathemperor native ios cancellation, background/resume, and subsequent delivery through the actual client/provider path remain unverified. device access returned "Agent device access is turned off for this environment." browser captures would not prove this native path. no ui appearance changed. the transfer deadline still depends on javascript running and does not bound staging, signed-url minting, or cleanup rpcs.
