fix(server): include thread context in generated pull requests - #18291
Conversation
ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — The change automatically adds thread history and test results to generated pull-request descriptions, altering an existing production path and shared provider prompt plumbing. Its implementation is bounded and tested, but the behavior is not opt-in, so the runtime change merits human review. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

gitRunStackedActionaccepts an independentthreadIdand requires only the source-control write scope. The server does not verify that the thread belongs to the action’s project or working directory.readThreadContextthen loads the projection by ID and passes raw visible history to the PR writer. The generated body is published without review. A caller with source-control write access can therefore select another thread in the environment and disclose its sensitive history in a PR body. The client’s default-branch confirmation is not a server-side security boundary. Direct RPC callers reach
createChangeRequestwithout that confirmation. Validate the thread against the authorized project and, where user isolation is required, the authenticated principal. Reject the action or omit the thread context when that validation fails.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Close the untrusted thread-data section.
Thread output is inserted directly into the prompt. The label does not prevent embedded content from being interpreted as instructions. Wrap the context in named opening and closing tags, escape embedded closing tags, and add a test with crafted command output.

History selection drops oversized items whole, so a long test run lost its command and exit code. Keep the tail of long command output, where test runners print their verdict. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Taking over this one for batch pull-request-10. I’ll keep the thread context change focused, preserve source-control-only access for commit and push, and verify it against current main before pushing to this branch. |

Pushed the maintainer takeover as cf71a3ae2a, preserving the original commits and merging current main. Thanks @luhagel for the thread-context implementation. The shared permission rule now requires thread-read access only for thread-aware PR creation; commit and push remain available with source-control-write alone. The projection-read warning now records only the thread ID and error tag. The earlier cross-project disclosure concern is addressed by requiring environment-wide thread-read permission. There is no project-specific read boundary in these scopes; both shipped callers pair the selected thread and checkout. Opus and a fresh second Sol review found no code blockers. Prompt tag delimiters were left out: they do not enforce an instruction boundary, and the existing writer also processes repository patches and templates as untrusted reference data. The PR body now records the focused test proof, unchanged baseline timeout, and platform/live-model limits. This remains unmerged; latest-head CI and the repository’s review gates still need to pass. |

Generated pull request descriptions could say tests were not run because the writer saw only Git changes. The writer now also receives a bounded digest of the selected thread’s visible history, including check commands, exit codes and recent output. Rolled-back runs are excluded; verbose output keeps its tail so test verdicts survive the budget. Missing thread context leaves PR creation available.
Thread-aware PR creation requires thread-read permission. Commit, push and commit-and-push continue to require only source-control-write, including when a thread ID is supplied. The shared permission rule covers clients and server authorization.
This keeps @luhagel’s original contribution and commits, with current main merged and the permission regression corrected. Fixes #16737.
Verification on headless Linux, Node 24:
No live model generated a PR body during this takeover, so output quality remains unmeasured. No macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, Electron desktop or browser verification was run. This changes server generation and shared authorization; screenshots do not prove those behaviors. Independent full-diff reviews: Opus found no blockers in round one. Sol retracted its checkout-binding objection after a second full review; both reviews found no code blockers. Latest-head CI passed: lint, build/typecheck, general tests, web tests, release smoke, all eight server test shards, and native fingerprint checks. Optional platform/preview jobs were skipped. All inline review threads are resolved. Macroscope’s earlier approvability comment requests human review of the default-on behavior; that product decision remains with maintainers.
