New project always creates repositories under the T3 data directory's projects folder. The existing “Add project starts in” setting only controls browsing, so users cannot choose where newly created projects live.

Add an environment-scoped New projects directory setting in web/desktop General settings and mobile's New projects & threads settings. The shared server service uses it for every named-project creation, including agent tools, and streams the resolved destination to connected clients so previews stay current. Absolute paths and ~ paths work; leaving the setting empty preserves the existing default. Resetting it does not move existing projects.

Verification

  • Regression test failed against the original service because creation ignored the configured directory; it passes with the change. It also covers home expansion, collision suffixes, live changes, reset, and keeping existing project locations.
  • pnpm exec vp test run apps/server/src/project/ManagedProjectFolders.test.ts packages/contracts/src/settings.test.ts packages/client-runtime/src/state/server.test.ts apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/project/handlers.test.ts apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/worktree/registration.test.ts apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.test.ts apps/web/src/components/settings/settingsSearch.test.ts apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.restore.test.tsx: 342 passed.
  • pnpm exec vp test run apps/server/src/serverSettings.test.ts -t 'persists the new-project directory|reloads when a dangling settings link gets its destination': 2 passed. The existing watcher test timed out in an earlier parallel run; this isolated rerun passed.
  • Scoped tsc-rs --noEmit checks passed for server, web, mobile, contracts, and client-runtime. Targeted lint had no errors (existing warnings remain); formatting and git diff --check passed. React Doctor found no issues in changed files.
  • Browser pass on macOS against isolated worktree state: saved a custom directory, verified the live creation preview, created Custom Directory Proof, and confirmed the repository path, README, icon, and initial Git commit on disk. Reset immediately restored the default preview. Native mobile, the Electron shell, and relay/tunnel connections were not manually exercised; they use the shared server behavior, and mobile typechecking passed.

Automated review follow-up

Fixed the Macroscope and CodeRabbit mixed-selection findings in 6ecc116b57: the row reset remains available when environments differ, the page-wide restore action recognizes mixed new-project directories, and mobile offers an explicit default-directory action for mixed values.

Verification: a new restore regression failed before the fix and passed afterward; the three focused scoped-settings test files passed 32 tests. Web/mobile typechecks, targeted lint (existing warnings only), formatting, and React Doctor's changed-file scan passed. A real two-environment browser check reproduced both missing controls against the original code, verified them after the fix, and confirmed that row reset cleared both persisted directories. The page-wide confirmation listed only the new-project directory. The browser host disconnected before its final confirmation could be clicked; the restore regression covers that action.

Mixed selection before review fix Mixed selection after review fix
Mixed directories: row reset missing and page restore disabled Mixed directories: row reset visible and page restore enabled

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR adds a new environment-level project-creation capability and changes where an existing workflow writes repositories when configured. It spans shared server behavior, live client state, and web/mobile settings, so human review is warranted.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds a configurable directory for new named projects. Settings screens can edit and restore the setting. The server resolves the directory during project creation and includes the resolved root in server configuration snapshots and settings-update events.

Changes: New Project Directory

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and edit the directory setting
packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, packages/contracts/src/settings.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.restore.test.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/settingsSearch.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsServerControlsRouteScreen.tsx, apps/server/src/serverSettings.test.ts, docs/user/source-control.md
Adds a trimmed newProjectBaseDirectory setting. Web and mobile settings screens expose the directory. Restore, search, tests, and documentation cover the setting.
Resolve and use the project directory
apps/server/src/project/ManagedProjectFolders.ts, apps/server/src/project/ManagedProjectFolders.test.ts, apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/project/*, apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/worktree/registration.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.test.ts
ManagedProjectFolders resolves the configured directory and uses it when creating named projects. Tests cover custom and default locations, tilde expansion, duplicate names, and existing project paths. Related mocks and project-creation text are updated.
Publish the resolved project root
packages/contracts/src/server.ts, apps/server/src/ws.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/serverConfigProjection.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/server.test.ts
Server config snapshots and settings-update events include newProjectsRoot. The settings-update payload contract and client projection carry the field.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 1429e

Users can configure the destination for new projects and reset mixed selections to the default on both settings screens; existing projects remain in place. No supported current-head issue remains that should delay merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6ecc1

New projects can now be created outside the default data directory, within the server process’s filesystem permissions. Authenticated settings access, project-name sanitization and existing ownership-aware cleanup limit exposure. No authorization bypass was established, but deployment permissions and crash recovery were not fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed capability affects future named-project creation within the configured server environment. A settings writer can redirect those creations to locations accessible to the server process, where directory creation, repository initialization and starter-file writes occur. The inspected code does not establish a narrower filesystem permission ceiling.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The broader destination is an intentional settings capability, not an established authorization bypass. At the PR base, settings:write already covered configurable worktree destinations and host-executed project scripts. The two web public-entrypoint signals refer to test mocks, not additional production endpoints.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — WebSocket sessions are authenticated before RPC handling, and authorization checks required scopes against the session. The new non-provider setting requires settings:write; named-project creation separately requires orchestration:operate. The mobile interface also checks selected environments for settings-write access.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Destructive failure cleanup is limited to the claimed child workspace, not the configured parent directory. Preparation failures remove that workspace; later creation errors check project ownership before removal. These mechanisms predate the root-selection change and remain important containment controls when projects live outside the default data directory.
