After an earlier rewind, run ordinals contain gaps. “Edit from here” used ordinal minus one, which could target removed history; stopped resends and older paged prompts could also lose the action.

The action now uses the preceding visible local run's ready checkpoint, or the retained initial checkpoint after all history is loaded. It checks provider eligibility, reads paged prompts from the displayed timeline, and waits for the requested provider target and retained rollback suffix. Stale edits reject before dispatch. Idle providers and Claude's replacement session at thread start are supported. The windowed projection keeps the initial ready checkpoint, and streaming rows reuse equal availability sets.

Scope and approval: maintainer-requested takeover of this focused existing rewind bug. Rebuilt from @voltcrash's #18982, retaining the contributor's commits and merging main normally. No new product surface or provider capability.

Verification:

  • 409 focused tests pass in the existing selector, rewind waiter, timeline, and projection suites. Changed-file lint/format and scoped web/server typechecks pass; four existing test unused-import warnings remain.
  • Original four added cases became ten focused regression cases in existing files, plus extensions to existing streaming/projection tests. Red checks reproduce the target, eligibility, streaming, cold-load, stale-edit, overlapping-target, idle-provider, and replacement-provider failures. No new test files.
  • Five independent Opus/Sol review rounds; final round has no code blockers. Review fixes include notification-only predecessors, paged prompts, provider eligibility, cold checkpoint retention, streaming cost, and completion races.
  • Final head live on Linux web with real Codex turns: completed edit after rewind, stopped edit, identical stopped resend, and cold loading then paging eleven turns and editing the oldest prompt all restore exact composer text. The older source is absent from the bounded message projection during the paging check.
  • Claude replacement-session behavior is source-traced and tested; no live Claude run. Missing nonzero paged checkpoint/provider metadata safely hides the action. Completion is target-specific, not a unique request success receipt; equal-target overlapping requests remain indistinguishable as before.
  • Actual file restoration in an isolated worktree was not exercised. The project-root guard rejected file restore and kept files unchanged. Electron, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, other providers, and relay/tunnel connections are not live-verified here.

Before — actual main at 5307c233b1: the prompt targets unavailable ordinal 16.

Before: edit targets a removed run

Before interaction recording

After — 3ffafd6a78: conversation rewinds and the exact prompt returns.

After: exact prompt restored after rewind

Completed-turn recording · Stopped-turn recording · Identical stopped-resend recording

Cold load and paged history on the final head:

After: oldest paged prompt restored after eleven-turn rewind

Paged-history recording

Published-head build, lint and all test jobs pass; review threads are resolved. An earlier native-fingerprint run was cancelled by workflow concurrency and replaced by a successful run on the same head. The cancelled result is retained in the check history.

Implementation: Codex gpt-6.1-sol; tests: Codex gpt-6-astra; reviews: Claude claude-opus-5-5 and Codex gpt-6-sol, through T3 Code.

"Edit from here" assumed the run before run N was always run N - 1. Run
ordinals keep counting after a rewind, so after one rewind the action
looked up the rolled-back run's checkpoint and failed with "Rollback
target run ordinal N is unavailable". A run stopped before its own
checkpoint was captured also hid the action entirely.

Target the checkpoint of the previous visible run instead, or the thread
start for the first run once all history is loaded, and no longer
require the edited run to have its own checkpoint. Send that
checkpoint's id with the rollback: the history window the command used
to re-fetch omits the thread-start checkpoint once the run that created
it was rolled back.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at fa9a72c

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a localized web bug fix for an existing rollback workflow: it selects the correct prior checkpoint after rewinds and exposes the action for interrupted runs, while retaining the existing fallback behavior. The change adds focused tests and does not alter schemas, deployment, product defaults, or static-analysis configuration.

📝 Walkthrough

Rewind targets now use preceding visible runs and ready checkpoints. ChatView passes thread-start readiness and available turn counts to the timeline, includes matching checkpoint identifiers in revert requests, and detects rollback completion by run status. Windowed projections retain the ready thread-start checkpoint.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2f216

In an edge case the composer stays locked on "Rewinding conversation" for up to two minutes even though the rollback can succeed. Mergeable, with a small follow-up to fail fast.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2f216

Checkpoint ownership and workspace protections remain in place, with no demonstrated expansion of access. However, overlapping rewinds can satisfy the new completion check using another request’s result, potentially restoring the composer before the requested rollback finishes or fails.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new success witness can acknowledge a different overlapping rollback. For example, editing run 2 to target ordinal 1 can capture run 4 as its witness while an earlier rollback to ordinal 3 is executing. When the earlier request marks run 4 rolled_back, the later wait can succeed although run 2 remains unchanged. The composer is then restored and the rewind guard released before the requested operation finishes; a subsequent failure is no longer observed by that wait. The base implementation watched the edited run, so this shallower rollback would not satisfy it. Thread-command locks, workspace leases, command deduplication, and request-specific failures provide useful containment but do not bind this success predicate to the requested rollback.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified regression concerns rollback and composer consistency within a thread that the caller can operate. Inspected controls do not demonstrate new cross-thread access or greater provider or filesystem authority. File restoration remains subject to workspace-isolation checks.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The web entrypoint retains its environment operate-scope check and running, connection, and rewind guards. The new provider-turn availability filter further limits offered targets, while server-side validation remains the enforcement boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing worker retries failed effects and records request-specific rollback failure after terminal failure, except for interruption-only causes. Those recovery mechanisms do not repair a client wait that has already resolved from another rollback’s run update.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind successful completion to the rollback request and checkpoint target, or verify that the intended suffix has reached its terminal state before restoring the composer. Handle an unavailable completion witness as an explicit recovery condition rather than dispatching an operation whose success cannot be observed.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

For #16727, the client now maps each visible local run to the ready checkpoint of the preceding visible run. It uses the thread-start checkpoint only for the first visible run when that checkpoint is ready. It excludes inherited history, unsettled runs, missing checkpoints, and unavailable provider targets. ChatView sends checkpoint and scope identifiers from the live projection, and the rollback waiter handles runs that are paged out. Projection changes retain the initial ready checkpoint across cold loads. The updated tests cover rewind gaps, action visibility, provider eligibility, streaming updates, and paged history.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within #16727. Session logic, timeline projection, ChatView, rollback waiting, and checkpoint retention implement or test the target-selection and action-visibility behavior. The server projection change supports retention of the required initial checkpoint during paged history. No unrelated product behavior or contract change is shown.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description clearly explains the problem, implementation, scope, verification results, limitations, screenshots, recordings, and agent usage. It does not use explicit Problem and Change headings, and the scope section does not include a direct approval comment or link to the maintainer approval, but the required information is otherwise substantially complete.

Taking over this one for batch web-misc-05. I’ll keep this as a single focused fix, reduce the tests to useful coverage, merge current main without rewriting your commits, and verify rollback targeting before publishing.
