🟠 High chat/MessagesTimeline.logic.ts:2407
With hideReasoning enabled, this pass deletes a terminal assistant answer when trailing tool rows follow it, leaving the tools and metadata but not the answer. attachTrailingToolGroupsToAssistant clears showAssistantMeta on terminal messages when it relocates their metadata, so this check mistakes those answers for commentary; identify commentary independently of that presentation flag or preserve messages with relocated terminal metadata.

Confirmed and fixed in ebac9e8: a message that has a relocated assistant-meta row counts as terminal, so it is never hidden. Covered by the "keeps a terminal answer whose meta moved below trailing tools" test.

🟡 Medium chat/MessagesTimeline.tsx:954
With hideReasoning enabled, Find reports matches in intermediate assistant commentary that the timeline cannot reveal. applyTimelineDensity removes those rows even when Find is active, so navigation computes rowIndex = -1 and returns without loading or materializing the already-present entry; bypass density filtering while Find is active.

Fixed in ebac9e8: the density pass is skipped while Find is open, so every match keeps a row to scroll to.

ApprovabilityVerdict: Would Approve Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The PR adds two false-by-default, opt-in chat density settings implemented as a localized display-only transformation, leaving existing rendering and stored settings unchanged by default. The supplied findings still flag enabled-mode risks involving terminal answers and Find navigation, which remain correctness blockers outside this eligibility assessment. Not approved because:

Note This comment is posted by Julius' dot The screenshots show the expanded, compact live, and finished states, but not the line updating between tool calls or commentary disappearing as the next step starts. Please add a short recording of that sequence through the final answer, as required by the verification guide. I'll leave this in draft for that evidence; mark it ready once added. |

Added the recording to the description: chat-live-sequence.mp4. It shows the single live line updating through each tool call, commentary staying hidden between steps, and the final answer at the end. I also addressed the bot findings in ebac9e8. Marking ready. |

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winRemove reasoning-only group toggles when hiding reasoning.
If a work group contains only reasoning, this filter removes its
workdetails row but retains itswork-togglerow. The toggle still shows a reasoning summary and opens an empty group. Filter or rebuild the toggle with the same visible entries.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Problem
While an agent works, every tool call, reasoning trace, and commentary message is added to the chat timeline as its own row. On long turns this grows into a wall of intermediate output. If you only care about the result, you have to scroll past it to read the final answer.
Change
Two client settings under Settings → Appearance → Interface, both off by default:
work,work-live,work-toggle,thinking) collapses to its last row, and a work group to its last entry. The live area becomes one line that updates in place instead of growing. A run the user expands stays intact, so the disclosure still works. Both are applied by
applyTimelineDensity, a display-only pass inMessagesTimeline.logic.ts. It runs on the rows afterderiveMessagesTimelineRowsWithState, so the incremental projection state and row derivation are unchanged. With both settings off it returns the input array as is. While Find is open, the pass is skipped so every match has a row to reveal.Scope and approval
This is a focused configuration option for an existing capability: the chat timeline's work log, which already groups, folds, and live-updates tool and reasoning rows. The options only control how much of that existing output is shown. They add no new workflow, and defaults are unchanged. I don't have prior maintainer approval for it. If it needs an Ideas discussion first, I'm happy to open one.
Verification
MessagesTimeline.density.test.ts(6 tests) covers: identity when both settings are off; reasoning and commentary hidden then compacted to one line; hide-reasoning alone keeps tool rows and the final answer; live commentary hidden as soon as the next step starts; a terminal answer with relocated metadata is kept; a run the user expanded is left intact.apps/webtypecheck passes. Before (defaults): expanded turn showing every commentary message and command:
After, while working: one live line under "Working for 12s":
Recording, both settings on (chat-live-sequence.mp4, 41s): the single live line goes Thinking → Running sleep → Running wc → Running sleep → Running ls, commentary never appears between steps, and the final answer replaces the line at the end. The "changed files" cards in the recording come from me switching branches in the same checkout, not from the agent.
After, turn finished: only the final answer:
With both settings switched off again, the full timeline renders as before. Not checked: providers other than Codex, and the desktop/mobile clients.
