Unproven: the POCO M3 Pro 13,000-item row (143.3 -> 18.1 ms). Both M3 recordings end on "Running..." before that result.
Unproven: the timings at the current head. They were measured on Oct 13, before main was merged in on Oct 19; no benchmark has run since.

Closes #19120

Problem

While an agent streams, every chunk made the mobile app redo work for the whole thread: the projection reducer copied and renumbered every visible row, then buildThreadFeed and deriveThreadFeedPresentation walked and regrouped every row again. On a POCO M3 Pro (Hermes, dev build), one chunk at the end of a 13,000-item thread took about 143 ms of JS.

Change

  • buildThreadFeed keeps the previous build in a cache the caller owns (createThreadFeedCache(); the composer state and ThreadFeed each hold one, so two thread screens never evict each other). When the rows before some point are the same objects as last time, it reuses the feed up to the last spot where no activity group was open, and only projects and groups the rows after it. It rebuilds from scratch when something thread-wide changed: attempts, nodes, answered questions, or delegated children (a late child can hide an earlier delegation call).
  • deriveThreadFeedPresentation does the same with its own cache, cutting at user messages, since a user message starts every fold and is never hidden. It rebuilds from scratch when the latest run, the expanded folds or groups, or the live-work inputs change, or when a run started before the cut has entries after it.
  • The reducer's turn-item.updated path searches from the end (streamed items are the newest), and builds the new list in one loop and renumbers it in a second, instead of copy, splice, then map. Output is unchanged.

Rows outside the changed tail keep their object identity, the same way the existing per-row WeakMap caches already do.

Scope and approval

Bug report #19120 with measurements and a suggested direction. It is the same direction: keep the unchanged prefix and only redo the changed rows. No behavior or UI change.

Verification

JS per streamed chunk on the last item of a synthetic thread, real functions running in Hermes on the phones (dev client, median of 40 chunks, main -> this branch):

Items POCO M3 Pro POCO F4
1,000 8.8 -> 1.2 ms 4.7 -> 0.7 ms
3,000 30.9 -> 3.9 ms 15.4 -> 1.9 ms
5,000 51.8 -> 7.3 ms 27.0 -> 3.4 ms
13,000 143.3 -> 18.1 ms (not in the recording) 78.9 -> 9.6 ms

The bench screen was a temporary entry point and is not committed. Each chunk still does some whole-thread work: the reducer copies and renumbers turnItems, buildThreadFeed scans every item for answered questions and delegated children, and both builders walk their previous result to find the first changed entry. This was not profiled separately.

Full M3 run: https://files.catbox.moe/9thzy7.mp4

Real app with this branch on the M3 Pro, against a local dev server and a test project. Two Claude turns stream with tool rows and text, each folds to "Worked for ..." when it settles, and expanding and collapsing the first fold still works (recording at 2x):

Full recording: https://files.catbox.moe/6s4t26.mp4

Tests:

  • threadActivity.test.ts: a streamed sequence (text chunks, a new tool row, a late subagent that hides an earlier delegation, an async answer, a row inserted mid-run, run settling, a late item in an old run) must match a fresh build at every step, with folds collapsed and expanded. Turning off the guard for a run that spans the cut, or the delegated-children check, makes it fail.
  • orchestrationV2Projection.test.ts: an updated item moves to its new ordinal, rows are renumbered, and an inherited row keeps its identity. Same results on the old and new reducer.
  • vp test run on apps/mobile/src/lib/threadActivity.test.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state, apps/mobile/src/features/threads, and apps/mobile/src/state passes, except three suites that do not load locally (use-visible-second-clock, useThreadHeaderOptions, use-selected-thread-git-actions: they fail bundling node:sea from packages/shared/src/HostProcess.ts, outside this change). Typecheck passes for apps/mobile and packages/client-runtime.
  • After merging main, the streamed-sequence test also covers a resumed subagent that folds with the run that started it.

Not measured: React render time after the feed changes, and a release (bytecode) Hermes build.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This is a substantial production-path performance refactor spanning feed construction, presentation, and streamed projection updates, with new persistent caches and incremental restart logic. The added tests provide useful coverage, but the complexity and broad runtime impact warrant human review.

A run that crossed a user message built the rows above it from its later
entries, so dropping those entries must not reuse the rows.

📝 Walkthrough

Turn-item projections now update rows in place within copied arrays. Mobile thread feeds and presentations reuse unchanged prefixes across streamed updates. Persistent caches are wired into the composer and thread feed. Tests compare cached and fresh results across incremental thread changes.

Changes: Thread update processing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Projection item updates
packages/client-runtime/src/state/orchestrationV2Projection.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/orchestrationV2Projection.test.ts
Updated turn items are replaced or appended. Visible rows are reordered and renumbered in one pass. Tests cover ordinal changes, tie ordering, and row identity.
Feed grouping and prefix reuse
apps/mobile/src/lib/threadActivity.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/use-thread-composer-state.ts
Feed construction records restart positions and reuses eligible projected-row prefixes when attempts, nodes, folded answers, and delegated-child mappings match. Anchored-message builds bypass and clear the cache.
Presentation prefix reuse and streamed validation
apps/mobile/src/lib/threadActivity.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadFeed.tsx, apps/mobile/src/lib/threadActivity.test.ts
Presentation construction reuses eligible prefixes at safe user-message boundaries. ThreadFeed supplies a persistent cache. Streamed tests compare cached presentations with fresh builds and check delegation visibility.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to b17fb

Streamed thread updates on mobile now reuse the unchanged earlier portion of the feed instead of rebuilding it on every chunk. Switching threads still starts from a fresh feed, and a fully replaced feed is rebuilt from the beginning. Tests check that the cached results match fresh builds. No merge-blocking risk was found.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b17fb

The change adds client-side caching without an identified new access path or privilege increase. Per-view cache ownership and conservative rebuild rules limit exposure. Remaining uncertainty concerns interrupted rendering and reliance on immutable input objects.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected integration changes reconstruction of already-supplied thread data, not the authority used to retrieve data or perform actions. Existing MCP and secret-request render paths retain explicit environment and thread parameters; the changed ThreadFeed wiring adds cache construction and use rather than a new sensitive sink.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected production owner wraps ThreadFeed in a boundary keyed by the scoped environment/thread identity. Changing that identity remounts the subtree and discards its presentation cache. Composer reuse is separately constrained by row-identity and thread-wide metadata checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Cache publication occurs after derivation, and failed eligibility checks select reconstruction rather than retaining an unvalidated prefix. This limits partial-result exposure. Correct reuse still depends on immutable input objects; concurrent-render interruption was assessed from source rather than a dedicated execution test.

Explanation

Issue #19120 requires lower per-chunk work in long mobile threads while preserving feed behavior. buildThreadFeed and deriveThreadFeedPresentation now reuse unchanged prefixes through caller-owned caches. The projection update path searches from the end and preserves unchanged row objects while rebuilding and renumbering in separate loops. The mobile consumers own and pass the caches. Tests compare cached and fresh results across streaming, late children, answered questions, insertions, settled runs, resumed subagents, and fold states. Projection tests cover ordering, renumbering, replacement, and row identity.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files implement issue #19120. The projection changes reduce streamed-update work. The feed caches, consumer wiring, and tests support incremental feed and presentation processing. The reviewed changes do not establish unrelated product behavior or UI changes.

Adapt upstream PR pingdotgg#19135 at 1943366. Add cross-environment and local-message cache regression coverage.
Keeps the PR's prefix reuse in the feed and its presentation. A
presentation now also rebuilds from scratch when the latest run's
turnEnded flag changes, and the streamed-sequence test covers a
resumed subagent folding with the run that started it.

The feed and presentation caches were single module-level slots, so a
child thread pushed over its parent evicted the parent's prefix on every
render. Each consumer now owns its cache; without one the builders do a
plain full build.
