Problem

The thread details Changes row counted the server's automatic comparison even after the Changes panel selected another base or hid whitespace. A branch with one whitespace edit and one added line showed +2/-1 in the row while the panel showed +1/-0; selecting a base at HEAD left the row at +2/-1 beside an empty comparison.

Change

Read the same environment-scoped comparison query as the Changes panel, using the thread's remembered base and shared session whitespace toggle. Retain workspace changes received during pending previews and refresh panel-populated caches when the row first opens. Preserve the contributor's commits and merge current main.

Scope and approval

Fixes #19530

GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/19530

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. Continues #19553, originally contributed by @whoisaldo. Changes apply to the shared web/desktop UI; no server, contract, provider, or native mobile changes.

Verification

  • The two original regression assertions failed on main with Changes+2-1 instead of Changes+1-0 and Changes+0-0.
  • Nine Chromium tests in GitActionsControl.browser.test.tsx pass on the final head. They cover comparison totals, whitespace toggles, pending mutations, cached remounts, and first row mounts against settled or pending panel previews. Each cache fix was checked against a failing assertion before the implementation changed.
  • Scoped lint and formatting pass; web TypeScript check exits 0. git diff --check passes.
  • Real Linux web dev app on main and final head: hidden whitespace +1/-0, shown whitespace +2/-1, alternate base at HEAD +0/-0. On main, the row stayed +2/-1 in the mismatching cases. The lead independently repeated the final interaction.

Evidence from the real Linux web app, hidden whitespace comparison:

Before: main bb7783e295 After: d78da18a46
Before: row +2/-1 while panel shows +1/-0 After: row and panel both show +1/-0

Before recording · After recording. The index below contains narrated steps, timestamps, the two diff thresholds, fixture scripts and the written visible-difference list.

Fixture matrix. Dedicated capture index, recordings, paired stills and diff artifacts. It records Linux Chrome 154, DPR 2, CSS viewports 1440×900 and 390×844 plus 1920×1080 inline coverage; desktop snapshot exports are resampled. A1–A3 have paired real-app captures, A4 close/reopen is partial, and A5–A13 are partial or unverified. Local-only artifacts in the index are not public proof. Native reduced-motion emulation and a frozen clock were not applied; CSS disabled animations. Some initial narrow captures were unsettled and retained beside retakes. The independent proof audit confirmed A1–A3 and independently reproduced matching +1/-0 totals, but returned INSUFFICIENT A4–A13. It recomputed 39 comparisons at both thresholds and inspected the capture/diff sheets and decoded recording samples. This PR is not fully verified. The matrix is not fully verified: broader navigation, settings precedence, multi-thread state, pending/error/permission paths, uncommitted/completed-turn filtering, and legacy response fixtures remain unverified. Electron desktop, macOS/Windows, remote/relay and tunnel were not run. Native mobile has no equivalent row and is unchanged.

Limits: external edits that serialize to identical Git status have no client refresh signal until the comparison is reopened or another mutation occurs. The session whitespace override lasts until reload. The row and an open Changes panel can both invalidate the shared preview. Preview requests include the existing bounded patch payload. Three independent review rounds ran; the final shared-pending-preview finding was fixed with a red/green regression after round three, without a fourth review round.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at bfc9111

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This focused web fix keeps the existing automatic-base path unchanged and makes the Changes totals follow a user-selected diff base using the existing preview data. The production changes are localized, backward-compatible, and covered by targeted tests, with no product-default or static-analysis configuration changes.

Walkthrough

The Changes row can display totals for a selected diff comparison using preview data. When preview data is unavailable or no comparison base is selected, it uses Git status totals. The control also refreshes selected comparison totals after workspace mutations.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to afc25

No actionable issue remains in the selected-base totals or refresh behavior. The PR is ready to merge after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to afc25

Remembered comparisons now cause repository previews to load without opening the diff panel. The change retains existing environment read checks and workspace restrictions; no new privilege or demonstrated security bypass was identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The added read surface is repository preview data in the selected thread’s environment. Git resolves the supplied checkout to its worktree root, so processing can cover that repository rather than only a displayed file. The inspected change does not introduce a cross-environment selector or additional authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new row and existing diff panel use the same preview query and environment-specific filesystem-read gate. Server handling canonicalizes cwd and accepts it only within the configured workspace root or a recognized workspace before invoking the VCS driver. These are shared controls, not newly introduced protections.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing Git preview path prepares untracked files using a scoped temporary index selected through GIT_INDEX_FILE, disables split-index sharing, and scopes the preparation and diff reads together. The new automatic caller reuses this isolation rather than introducing a separate index-mutation workflow.

Explanation

The title "fix(web): Changes row matches the diff comparison" names the main change: the thread details Changes row now reads the same comparison the Changes panel uses, instead of the server's automatic comparison. It follows the conventional commit format and is specific to the web app. It is a short, single sentence and does not list files.

Taking over this one for batch worktree-git-12. I’ll keep this as a single fix on the original branch, rebuild it against current main, and verify cached remounts and refreshes that overlap status changes before publishing.

Labeled same-repo PRs deploy stage pr-<n> behind the relay-preview environment reviewer gate. Unlabel or close tears the stage down, and a nightly job retries failed teardowns. Runtime-created managed endpoint tunnels and CNAMEs are swept by a PreviewTunnelSweep resource.

Known gaps, tracked as follow-ups: an interrupted preview deploy can leave runtime tunnels behind; repo-level relay secrets still bypass the environment gate until moved.

Taking over this one to complete issue 19530, including the whitespace toggle. Reproduced both mismatches in the Linux web dev app on current main. Keeping the contributor commits and updating this PR.

…whitespace

Tests reproduce issue 19530: the thread details Changes row keeps the
automatic, whitespace-counted totals instead of the comparison the
Changes panel opens.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The thread details Changes row now reads the same diff preview the
Changes panel opens: the remembered branch base (or Automatic) and the
panel's whitespace toggle, which moves into the session diff panel store
so the row can follow it without new settings or persistence.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The row stored the change key before its refresh callback ran, and the callback
skipped while the first comparison was still loading. An edit landing during that
load was marked handled, so the row kept the stale totals once the load settled.
Each comparison now remembers the change key it was last fetched against: the first
look relies on the query's own mount revalidation, a later key waits for any
in-flight fetch to settle and then refreshes, and a remount refreshes only when the
workspace changed while the row was unmounted.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
When the row mounted for the first time on a comparison the Changes panel had
already loaded, it recorded the current change key without refreshing. A still-fresh
cached result from before an edit was then shown until the next change. A first look
now refreshes when it finds cached data and no request is already in flight, so a
mount that starts its own fetch still makes only one request.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
When the row first mounted while the Changes panel's request for the same
comparison was still in flight, it recorded the current change key and skipped
its refresh. If the workspace changed after that request started, the stale
result stayed until the next change. The row now checks, before subscribing,
whether a request was already in flight and, if so, refreshes once it settles.
A cold mount that starts its own fetch still makes one request.
