fix(server): queued PR updates follow the takeover provider - #21314
Conversation
A PR-watch update queued during a turn kept the model and provider it was queued with. After a usage-limit takeover on another provider, it reran on the old provider and switched the thread back. Queued monitor updates now start on the thread's current selection, and the run, attempt, root node, and checkpoint scope move to that provider's conversation together. Queued user prompts keep their own selection. The usage-limit pause only holds the queue when the limited provider is the one the next item will run on. ApprovabilityVerdict: Would Approve Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a localized orchestration bug fix with focused runtime and integration coverage; the other changed files are test-only. An unresolved High-severity finding identifies provider-specific usage-limit masking in the new queue guard, leaving a correctness risk that independently blocks approval. … provider The queue guard only holds runs whose own provider is limited, so a different session error on the thread's current provider must not mask that provider's usage limit. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winAlign the
queue.resumeusage-limit guard with the new per-provider rule instartNextQueuedRun.
startNextQueuedRunnow blocks only when the limited run used the provider that the next queued run will start on (Lines 1317-1331). Thequeue.resumehandler still uses the old rule. It readssessionErrorforprojection.thread.providerInstanceId, and it rejects wheneverusageLimitBlockedRunreturns any run.Example trigger:
- A Codex run fails with
usage_limit. A PR-watch wake (amonitornotification) is queued behind it.startNextQueuedRunreturns early, because the wake still follows the Codex selection at that time.- The user switches the thread to Claude with
thread.model-selection.set. This command does not start the queue.- The user sends
queue.resume.usageLimitBlockedRunstill returns the failed Codex run, so the command fails with "Continue the limited thread before resuming its queue."After the selection change,
startNextQueuedRunwould start the wake on Claude, but the user cannot resume the queue. The commit message states that the guard "should hold only runs whose own provider is limited".queue.resumebreaks that rule. The only workaround is to send a new message.Resolve the effective provider of the next queued run the same way
startNextQueuedRundoes. Then compare that provider with the blocked run'sproviderInstanceId. Extract one shared helper for the selection and the guard, so the two paths do not diverge again.Proposed fix sketch

Taking over this one as maintainer. I’ll keep your queued PR-watch handoff intent, trim the tests to the minimum behavioral proof, and rebuild the implementation against current main before independent reviews. This remains one focused server fix, so I plan to push follow-up commits here while preserving your commits. No merge is planned. |

Pushed the maintainer rebuild to this original branch without rewriting your commits. Thanks @voltcrash for the reproduction and the provider-specific queue guard. The complete diff has passed two independent Opus/Sol review rounds after fixing compatible-account native continuation, stale attempt ownership when a provider-thread ID is reused, and provider-buffered monitor wakes that must stay with their original conversation. The historical usage-limit masking and explicit-resume findings were independently rechecked against 74912d7. All 162 affected tests pass, including all 154 existing main cases. The primary agent’s eight focused cases also pass. Before/after output and current-head proof. The body now describes the actual behavior and verification limits. CI is running on this pushed head; human approval and live-provider verification remain. No merge is planned. |
A delegated-task completion is queued without a model, so its run copied the thread's selection at enqueue. Starting it restored that copy over a model change made while it waited. Like queued PR-watch updates (pingdotgg#21314), it now starts on the thread's current selection. Fixes pingdotgg#22577
A delegated-task completion is queued with no selection of its own, so its run stores a copy of the thread's selection. Starting on that copy reverted a model change made while the notice waited. Queued delegated completions now follow the thread's current selection and conversation, as queued PR-watch updates do since pingdotgg#21314.
A PR-watch update queued before a provider takeover could restore the previous provider when it finally ran. It could also consume a queued prompt against a still-limited provider when another provider’s session error masked the usage-limit failure.
App-owned PR-watch updates now use the thread’s current model, options and provider conversation at delivery. Automatic startup and explicit queue resume share the same provider-specific usage guard. Compatible account switches keep their native conversation, and the run, attempt, root node, checkpoint scope and prompt agree on execution identity. Explicit user prompts and provider-buffered monitor wakes retain their queued selection and conversation.
Fixes #21313. Thanks @voltcrash for the original implementation and reproduction. This maintainer takeover preserves the original commits and merges main into the contributor branch.
