ApprovabilityVerdict: Would Approve Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused fix to the existing desktop Save image action, with optional IPC compatibility and no product-default or static-analysis changes. Separate unresolved findings identify filename path-safety and concurrent-download naming risks that remain blocking correctness concerns under repository policy. Needs human approval because:

The desktop bridge contract and IPC wiring expose downloadUrl(url, fileName). The desktop handler validates the sender and accepted URL schemes, matches downloads to the requesting web contents, and can set the save dialog’s default path from a filename with an extension. It cleans up listeners after a matching download, initiation error, window destruction, or timeout. Web media downloads use the bridge for supported URLs when available; other cases retain the fetch-and-save path. Tests cover download matching and listener cleanup. |

Desktop image saving is mergeable with owner awareness: an unusual overlapping save may receive the wrong suggested filename, and an error or HTML response may be treated as a download instead of being rejected.
Security architecture risk:
Low · up to 786d1
-
Desktop media downloads now bypass browser fetch restrictions while retaining the native save flow. The new route also bypasses the previous HTML-response rejection. The supported exposure is an interactive desktop download, not demonstrated automatic execution or data disclosure.
Retained concerns
- Low · security · inferred: The native download branch bypasses the existing rejection of HTML responses. An attacker-controlled media URL can therefore reach the save flow without that content gate, including when the remote response changes between display and download. The native save interaction bounds exposure; subsequent opening would be required for active-content effects, and no automatic execution is established.
Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The supported exposure is the desktop caller’s download session and user-selected local output. The new method initiates a network/download operation but returns neither response bytes nor a file-execution capability. Source evidence does not establish cross-tenant access or downstream service compromise.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- inferred — An untrusted media URL reaches the native download sink after the user selects Save. Unlike the base renderer path, this branch does not reject HTML before saving. This is a content-control regression, not proof that a saved response will execute or disclose credentials.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — The IPC pipeline validates payload shape, but the download handler checks only that the sender’s web contents exists, not its frame or origin. Existing application-window controls include sandboxing, context isolation, disabled Node integration, and same-origin top-level navigation enforcement. Those controls predate this PR; exact child-frame bridge reachability remains unresolved.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — The URL-chain guard prevents one URL’s naming listener from applying to a different initial URL, and a match removes the listener immediately. The handler does not represent later completion, interruption, or recovery states, and provides no independent listener teardown path.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed — Preserve an explicit media-response policy in the native path, including the existing HTML rejection, without restoring renderer CORS restrictions.
- proposed — Bind filename suggestions to request ownership rather than URL alone, with bounded cleanup for initiation failure and sender teardown. Separately, make the permitted caller frame and origin explicit at the IPC boundary.

The media menu saved images by fetching them in the renderer. Most image hosts send no CORS headers, so the fetch failed and Save image showed "Could not save image" even though the image was on screen. The CSP also blocks fetching data: URLs. On desktop, hand http(s) and data: URLs to the main process, which starts a native download with webContents.downloadURL and suggests the app's file name in the save dialog. Other clients keep the renderer fetch. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Problem
In the desktop app, choosing Save image from an image's context menu (inline in chat or in the image viewer) fails with "Could not save image: The file could not be fetched. The host may block browser access (CORS)…" for most remote images, even though the image is on screen. For example, an assistant reply with
renders, but it can't be saved. Images from hosts that sendAccess-Control-Allow-Origin(Wikimedia, for example) and local attachments save fine.downloadMedia()inmediaContent.tsfetches the image in the renderer to build a blob. An<img>can show a cross-origin image without CORS, butfetch()can't read it, and most image hosts send no CORS headers. The renderer's CSP also leavesdata:out ofconnect-src, sodata:sources (such as tool activity images) fail the same way.Change
On desktop,
downloadMedia()passes http(s) anddata:URLs to a newdownloadUrlbridge method. The main process callswebContents.downloadURLon the sender. Chromium runs the download outside the renderer's CORS and CSP, with the window's session, so cookies still apply. It shows the native save dialog and handles cancel and replace confirmations. #9223 used the same approach for the native menu.downloadURLcan't suggest a file name, and environment asset URLs end in an opaque id. So when the app's file name has an extension, the handler sets its last path segment (it can come from chat alt text) as the dialog's default path, but only on the download whose URL chain starts at the requested URL. Without that, a chat attachment was offered asd5a26bb4-17bf-…instead oflocal-attachment.png.Web and older desktop builds without the bridge method keep the existing renderer fetch. The bridge method is optional in
DesktopBridge. Mobile has its own share/save path and is unaffected. Copy image still reads the image through the renderer fetch and likely hits the same CORS limit. It's a separate entry point, so I left it for a follow-up.Scope and approval
Small, focused fix for an obvious bug in an existing action: Save image is offered on an image that is visible but can't be saved. No new workflow or setting, so this falls under the obvious-bug exception. I found no open issue or PR for it. #9223 (closed as abandoned) diagnosed the same CORS split for remote images.
Verification
Desktop dev build (
vp run dev:desktop) on macOS, isolated home dir. A thread whose assistant reply has a no-CORS image (Google logo), a CORS image (Wikimedia PNG), and a local-path image, plus a user message with an image attachment. Before (
main): Save image on the no-CORS image fails inline and in the viewer. No save dialog opens. After (this branch): the native save dialog opens with the image's file name, and the saved file is byte-identical to the origin's response (
cmp).Checked on this branch, from the context menu (inline and in the viewer):
googlelogo_color_272x92dp.pngand saves a valid 544×184 PNG.PNG_transparency_demonstration_1.png, a valid 800×600 PNG.local-attachment.png, a valid 200×120 PNG identical to the source file.data:URL, throughwindow.desktopBridge.downloadUrl(dataUrl, "data-url.png")in DevTools: dialog suggestsdata-url.pngand saves a valid 64×64 PNG. A name without an extension falls back to Chromium'sdownload.png. Chat markdown dropsdata:image sources before rendering, so I couldn't reach this path from a chat message. Not changed: the toast says "Download started" once the dialog opens, including when the user then cancels, as with the browser download path.
