… of asking to install it macOS refuses to run an Intel-only gh or git on Apple Silicon without Rosetta (errno -86), and discovery reported it as not installed, so the user was told to install a tool they already had.

ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused bug fix that improves the install hint for incompatible macOS CLI binaries while preserving existing behavior for other probe failures. The production changes are localized and covered by targeted tests, with no defaults, schemas, deployment settings, or static-analysis suppressions changed. Problem
On an Apple Silicon Mac without Rosetta, a
ghbuilt only for Intel (for example a leftover/usr/local/bin/gh) cannot start: Node's spawn throwsspawn Unknown system error -86, macOS's EBADARCH. Settings → Source Control then shows GitHub as "Not available on this server: Install the GitHub command-line tool…", telling the user to install a tool they already have, with no sign of which file is wrong (#14590). An Intel-onlygitorjjgets the same treatment.Change
When a discovery probe fails to spawn with errno -86 on macOS, the item's install hint now names the file the server tried to run and the mismatch, followed by the original hint:
unavailableInstallHintinsource-control-core'sdiscovery.tsfinds the path with the samePATHlookup the spawner uses (SpawnExecutableResolution). Both probes call it:probeClifor the hosting CLIs, and the Git/Jujutsu probe inSourceControlDiscovery.ts. The text goes intoinstallHintbecause that is what every client shows for an unavailable tool (Settings, the Git actions hint, and the add-project clone hint on web and mobile); no client reads the item'sdetail. The status staysmissing, as before. Not changed:
detail;isMissingExecutable, since counting -86 as missing there would make an Intel-onlygitread as "not a repository";fromGhinGitHubCredentials.ts, which #19013 rewrites; and the unknown-remote refinement.Scope and approval
Fixes #14590. From Julius's triage: "a bad CPU type should be treated the same as not installed. The error should name the executable and the reason (the path and the architecture mismatch) … A focused PR that links this issue is very welcome."
The issue's other half, the environment looking disconnected, is already fixed on
main. #14345 turned the synchronous spawn throw into a spawn error that discovery catches, and #15515 stopped one handler's defect from endingsubscribeServerConfig; neither links this issue. This PR is the message only. camptx, who reported the issue, opened #14594 for both halves; it was closed on 2026-10-11 in the cleanup of PRs written with older models, not on its approach.Verification
