ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused GitLab data-completeness fix that adds batched GraphQL line-count reads to the existing pull-request stats flow. The new reads are bounded and gracefully fall back to the prior behavior when unavailable, with coverage for batching and failure cases. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Merge Risk:
Low · up to cae88
-
GitLab merge requests can still be listed, but a failed line-count request may appear simply as missing counts. The change is mergeable with that limitation explicitly accepted or followed up.
Security architecture risk:
Low · up to 19960
-
The read-only line-count queries have limited scope and bounded concurrency. Their failure path sends complete error objects to logs, however, and the resulting diagnostic exposure is not fully established.
Retained concerns
- Low · security · inferred: The new batch-failure fallback passes complete error objects, including underlying causes, to logging instead of bounded diagnostic attributes. This creates a potential export path for provider or process diagnostic data. Sensitive-data emission remains unverified because retained cause contents and deployed logger behavior are not fully established.
Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The intended new data scope is line-count metadata for requested merge requests on an existing GitLab host, using the existing account context. Four-request concurrency is per invocation, not a deployment-wide limit. The inspected path does not demonstrate increased privileges or cross-host access; runtime host/token binding remains unverified.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- inferred — A decoding failure reaches the new warning through GitLabMergeRequestReadError.cause. This supports the diagnostic-boundary concern, but not a verified payload or credential disclosure. Schema input retention is optional, deployed log serialization is unresolved, and no ordinary merge-request-author path to malformed response fields was established. The supplied security candidate remains deferred.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — Repository and IID values enter a fixed GraphQL document through JSON variables sent on stdin, not query-text or command-argument interpolation. Typed authentication failures retain their existing provider mapping. Classification of authorization failures expressed only in a GraphQL response body remains unresolved; omission of optional counts does not itself grant access.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — The fixed read-error message and bounded shared formatter are useful diagnostic controls, but the new warning does not use the formatter. Ordinary process-exit errors retain stderr length and truncation metadata rather than stderr content, limiting that failure channel's exposure.

🟡 Minor · Limit stats lookup to providers with a stats implementation. · usePullRequestList.ts:210-223
apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/usePullRequestList.ts:210-223
🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winLimit stats lookup to providers with a stats implementation.
Rows from Bitbucket, Azure DevOps, Forgejo, and GitCafe can reach this selector, but those providers do not implement
listChangeRequestStats. The server skips those references and returns no stat. The row remains unanswered, so scrolling to a different visible batch can include it in a new stats request again. This causes repeated work without producing counts.Keep GitLab eligible while restoring the provider guard:

GitLab's REST responses carry no line counts, so merge request rows and the detail page showed none. Read them from GraphQL's diffStatsSummary, batched per project, and let mobile request them for non-GitHub rows. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The breakdown needs per-file line counts, which GitLab's GraphQL diffStats gives in one read. A file list shorter than the summary's file count is reported as truncated, so no breakdown is shown rather than one that misses lines. Both GraphQL reads share one helper. Co-authored-by: coderabbitai[bot] <136622811+coderabbitai[bot]@users.noreply.github.com>
Mobile asks for a row's counts until its host answers. Bitbucket, Azure DevOps and the other hosts without listChangeRequestStats never answer, so their rows were asked for again every time the visible rows changed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
MergeRequest.diffStats is a plain [DiffStats!] list, not a connection.
GitLab rejects `diffStats { nodes { ... } }` with "Field 'nodes' doesn't
exist on type 'DiffStats'", which left merge requests without a
breakdown. This reverts 72fa428.

Problem
GitLab merge requests show no line counts. GitHub rows show
+X −Yin the pull request list and on the detail page, but GitLab's REST responses don't include additions or deletions, so GitLab rows and detail pages left them blank.Change
diffStatsSummary. One request covers up to 100 merge requests in a project, and up to 4 requests run at a time. If a request fails, it logs a warning and only its own rows go without counts.listChangeRequestStats, so the list fills in counts after the rows load. GitHub already works this way.getChangeRequestPreview) and linked-thread read (getChangeRequestSummary). Both skip the project merge-settings call they never used. Linked threads still get the counts, so they make the same number of calls as before. Hover cards make one call instead of two.getFileStats, so the code vs tests vs generated breakdown (feat(web): show how much of a PR is code vs tests, mocks, and generated files #22189) shows for merge requests too. GraphQLdiffStatsreturns the per-file counts in one read. If GitLab lists fewer files than its summary'sfileCount(it stops listing past its diff limits), the result is marked truncated and no breakdown is shown, rather than one that leaves out lines. Both GraphQL reads share one helper.glabstill reach the caller from the count reads, matching the rule fix(gitlab): show authentication and rate-limit errors from activity reads #18817 set for the other optional reads.Scope and approval
One problem: the GitLab provider leaves out line-count data that the provider interface already defines and every client already renders. GitHub provides it through the same optional provider methods (
listChangeRequestStats, getFileStats). This PR makes GitLab do the same, so GitLab merge requests get no new behavior that GitHub pull requests don't already have. There is no prior issue. This qualifies as a focused fix for an obvious defect: on GitLab, the counts that GitHub shows are just missing. I can open an issue for triage if maintainers prefer.
Verification
+25 −25(screenshots below).+25 −25total.packages/source-control-gitlab: batching into requests of 100 per project with one failed request not wiping the other results, the detail and linked-thread reads filling in counts, the linked-thread read skipping merge settings, an auth failure on the count read failing the detail, and a short file list being marked truncated. The touched test files pass (84 tests), and typecheck passes for the GitLab package, the server, and mobile.Before/after
