Problem

The macOS permission helper follows the System Settings window through one long-running osascript JXA process (SETTINGS_WINDOW_SCRIPT in MacSettingsWindow.ts). Its loop is while (true). The disposer kills it on normal cleanup, but if T3's main process dies without running the disposer, for example after a crash or a force quit, the tracker is reparented to launchd and keeps polling Settings every 0.5 to 1 s.

It only writes to stdout when the Settings state changes. So while Settings stays where it is, it never hits a broken pipe and never exits. On macOS 27.0.1 the orphan was still running 12 s after its parent exited, and nothing in the script would ever stop it.

Change

Import the unistd bridge and loop on $.getppid() !== 1, the same check snapShot/MacModifierPairShortcutProcess.ts already uses for its JXA poller. When the parent dies, the tracker finishes its current poll and exits. Bounds updates, the null/unavailable split and disposer cleanup stay as they were.

One focused test checks that the spawned script carries the import and the loop condition.

Scope and approval

There's no issue for this. It's a small fix for an obvious leak in an existing helper, and it copies a guard main already uses in the sibling poller, so I don't think it needs a prior discussion. The helper came from #11289; this changes 2 lines of its script.

Prior PRs: none attempted this. Open #21514 rewrites the comment just above the script; a local 3-way merge of its hunk with this change applies cleanly.

Verification

Focused tests in apps/desktop:

  • vp test run src/permissions/MacSettingsWindow.test.ts with main's MacSettingsWindow.ts: the new test fails, 1 failed, 3 passed.
  • vp test run src/permissions/ on this branch: 2 files, 21/21 pass.
  • tsc-rs --noEmit in apps/desktop, plus vp fmt --check and vp lint on the two files: pass.

Test output: the new test fails with main's script and all 21 permissions tests pass on the branch

Real subprocess check on macOS 27.0.1 (Apple silicon), System Settings open and stationary. A throwaway Node parent read the script out of each version of MacSettingsWindow.ts and spawned /usr/bin/osascript -l JavaScript -e <script> with the same stdio as watchMacSettingsWindow. It waited for the first state line (real Settings bounds), then exited without killing the child, either at once or after a 5 s hold (1 of 2 main runs, 3 of 4 branch runs). A shell harness recorded the child with ps before and after, and only killed PIDs it had started.

Run Child while parent alive After parent exit
main, 2 runs running, ppid = parent reparented to ppid 1, still running at 12 s
branch, 4 runs running, ppid = parent (5 s hold in 3 runs) exited after 0.915, 0.915, 0.928 and 1.051 s

Both versions still exit at once on the normal disposer path (child.kill() → SIGTERM).

macOS run log: on main the orphaned osascript is still alive 12 s after its parent exits; on the branch it exits 0.928 s after

Not checked

  • Bounds updates after the first one on the branch. Settings wasn't moved during the run, so only the first state line was observed. The code that reads and writes bounds didn't change.
  • The real T3 app crashing or being force-quit. The parent was a disposable Node process, not Electron.
  • The 0.5 s frontmost cadence. Settings wasn't frontmost, so the poll was 1 s.
  • Intel Macs and older macOS releases.

The permission helper's JXA tracker looped forever. If T3 exited without
calling the disposer and System Settings stayed still, the tracker never
wrote to stdout, so it never hit a broken pipe and kept polling as an
orphan. Check getppid() like the modifier-pair poller does.

📝 Walkthrough

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~8 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 0ca96

The watcher lifecycle change is functioning as intended; adding an executable lifecycle test would improve regression protection but is not a merge-blocking production risk.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 0ca96

The change limits an existing macOS helper's lifetime without adding external inputs, privileges, or data access. No material security regression was identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed behavior is confined to the lifetime of the existing local Settings-window tracker. Its fixed System Settings selection and window-metadata collection are unchanged; the comparison introduces no additional tenant, service, datastore, or credential exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The native execution boundary continues to use the absolute osascript path and a fixed script rather than caller-supplied executable content. Returned window data is decoded against the existing finite-number and boolean schema before delivery. The new guard reads OS-provided parent identity and adds no caller-controlled authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The guard reduces orphaned metadata polling without replacing explicit cleanup. Each invocation retains its own child, pending-output buffer, and closed flag, so repeated or concurrent invocations acquire no new shared ownership or recovery dependency.

56-60: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Add an executable parent-lifecycle test.

MacSettingsWindow.test.ts:56-60 only inspects the mocked osascript argument. It does not execute the JXA tracker or assert that the child exits after its parent terminates. A regression in the getppid() behavior could therefore pass the test and recreate the orphaned polling process. Add a macOS-capable process-lifecycle test, or an equivalent executable assertion, rather than changing production code.
