Conversation
Re-lands pingdotgg#12978 (b4cebe8), reverted in pingdotgg#22222. ActiveWindow.test.ts was deleted by pingdotgg#22557 after the revert, so only the macOS window selection cases this fix adds are restored.
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused macOS snapshot bug fix that skips transparent or thin untitled helper windows while preserving normal dialogs and content-window ordering. The production change is isolated to active-window selection and is accompanied by targeted tests; Windows behavior and product defaults are unchanged. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. The lookup returns app-owner metadata and matching on-screen, layer-zero windows. The output buffer limit increases to 1 MiB. Tests cover parsed results and the osascript invocation. |

The selection logic excludes windows with nonpositive alpha or dimensions, then applies title and helper-strip geometry rules. Tests cover frontmost dialogs, palettes, strips, and content windows. |

The change remains limited to windows belonging to the frontmost application. However, the new selection rule can mistake a separate untitled utility window for a helper and capture another document instead, potentially retaining content the user did not intend to capture.
Retained concerns
- Low · security · inferred: The helper heuristic can redirect capture to an unrelated same-application document. For example, an opaque untitled window at x=0, y=1200, width=800, height=50 is skipped when followed by a titled document at x=0, y=0, width=800, height=1000. Both thickness checks pass despite the windows being separated vertically. The base selected the first window; the head captures and locally persists the document instead. This creates a bounded unintended-content capture risk, not a demonstrated permission bypass or network disclosure.
Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The demonstrated exposure is unintended local capture of another eligible window within the frontmost application. The inspected path does not establish selection across applications, additional capture privileges, or automatic transmission to an external service.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- inferred — Window titles and geometry influence which content reaches the capture sink. Matching one axis and thickness is insufficient to establish that two windows belong to the same visual target, allowing the separated-window counterexample described in the concern. No malicious application scenario or native reproduction was verified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — Lookup output is schema-decoded before use. Both native commands use fixed executable paths and argument arrays; window titles are not interpolated into executable script or shell commands. These controls constrain command execution but do not establish that a geometrically associated window is the user's intended target.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — An absent target fails before native capture. Existing preparation serialization, unique capture identifiers, and cleanup on preparation or persistence errors contain ordinary failure and repetition. These lifecycle controls remain unchanged and do not detect a successfully captured but unintended window.

Explanation
The description clearly explains the problem, implementation, scope, regression history, and focused verification results. It provides extensive real-build evidence and states untested platforms. It does not use the template's explicit Problem, Change, and Scope and approval headings, and it does not include a direct approval link or comment, but the required information is mostly present.

orthogonal positioning in both strip branches. Update the bounds comparison
around MAC_HELPER_STRIP_MAX_THICKNESS_RATIO so the width-matching branch also
compares the relevant y position and the height-matching branch compares the
relevant x position, while preserving the existing size and offset checks.

Confirming this on macOS with T3 Code Nightly 0.1.2-nightly.20261021.3499. With Chrome frontmost, SnapShot picked an untitled 2560x41 helper strip ahead of the browser window, and the attachment came out at 141x41 pixels. Thanks for re-landing the fix. |

Note Written by Thanks @YoruSamaOG for collecting the frontmost app's windows, preserving window order, and providing native Brave evidence. I kept your commit and merged current main, then tightened the helper heuristic with six production lines: horizontal strips must start at or above the content edge within 25% of its height; vertical strips use the equivalent left-edge bound. This addresses the orthogonal-position review finding while retaining stacked Chrome helpers. No original behavior or tests were dropped. Verification at a83139d:
Unverified: native macOS capture and fresh before/after UI evidence, because this task VM runs Linux. The existing Brave images remain contributor evidence for the original implementation, not verification of my changes. No web/mobile UI changed. CI is running; I am checking it in this run. |
On macOS, SnapShot captures the frontmost app's first on-screen layer-0 window. Chrome, Brave, Zed and Electron apps list thin, untitled helper strips ahead of their content window, so the SnapShot came out as a strip or an unreadable thumbnail instead of the window you were looking at (#16077).
The lookup now returns all of the frontmost app's layer-0 windows. It picks the first visible one, skipping transparent windows and thin untitled strips that line up with a content window behind them. Frontmost dialogs, titled palettes, offset utility strips and taller untitled windows keep their front-to-back order. The lookup output buffer is raised to 1 MiB because the script now returns every window.
This re-lands #12978, which was reverted in #22222 because it had not been run on a real desktop build. The code is the merged #12978 commit (b4cebe8) applied onto current main without changes. #22557 later deleted
ActiveWindow.test.ts, so this PR restores only the macOS window-selection cases this fix adds.Verification
