Problem

The Usage page deduplicates source warnings by their full text. When two selected hosts or transcript histories report different skipped-record counts, it repeats the same warning with different numbers. Identical counts from distinct sources are instead collapsed, understating the total.

Change

Use one shared formatter on web/desktop and mobile to show the total skipped-record count in one notice. Count each source fingerprint once across connected environments, using the largest reported count. Include retained diagnostics even when a transcript directory is missing. Keep other read failures and Cursor notices, and preserve provider filtering. The server uses the same warning text formatter; the wire format and transcript readers stay the same.

Scope and approval

This is a focused fix for an obvious duplicate-warning bug in the existing Usage view. It changes only how existing source diagnostics are presented. No settings or new workflow.

Verification

  • Added regression tests before the fix: the old derivation returned separate 1 and 11 notices instead of 12, and collapsed two distinct sources reporting 1 instead of showing 2.
  • TMPDIR=/private/tmp vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, generated GraphQL, typechecks for 29 affected packages, and all 52 focused tests pass after rebasing onto origin/main at e9d61252f6. The canonical temp directory avoids existing macOS /var versus /private/var path assertions.
  • Multi-host regression coverage: two hosts reporting 1 and 11 skipped records produce one 12 notice; feeding either host's sources alone produces 1 or 11. Equal counts from different hosts are added, repeated connections to either source count once, and different machines sharing a hostname and home path remain distinct through their volume IDs.
  • Missing-directory regression: one live malformed record plus two cached records from an absent transcript directory now yields a combined count of 3. The new test fails before the gate fix. Duplicate reports of the missing source count once; missing sources without diagnostics, healthy sources, and action sources remain excluded.
  • Chrome against isolated dev state: two synthetic Codex histories with 1 and 11 malformed records reproduce both 30- and 90-day notices before the fix; each range shows one 12 notice afterward. Hiding Codex removes its warning. Switching to 7 days or Past 24h clears the warning for these older files.
  • iPhone 17 Pro simulator, iOS 26.5, rebuilt development client: Settings → Usage shows the same before/after result at 30 days, and one 12 notice at 90 days.
  • Additional range coverage in Chrome and iOS: two synthetic sources each contain files aged 6 hours, 4 days, 16 days, and 60 days. Skipped-record totals increase from 3 at Past 24h to 9 at 7 days, 21 at 30 days, and 45 at 90 days, with exactly one notice each. Returning through the shorter ranges in Chrome restores 21, 9, then 3; cached wider scans do not inflate the shorter-range warning.
  • Desktop shares the verified web component. Electron shell, Android, and remote/relay connections were not separately exercised; this change adds no transport or platform-specific behavior.

Evidence uses an isolated copy of stopped-thread data and synthetic malformed logs. Private sidebars are hidden, and web images are cropped to exclude host/account/thread data. No evidence files are committed.

Web, 30 days: before After
30-day usage repeats skipped-record warnings for 1 and 11 records 30-day usage shows one warning totaling 12 skipped records

90 days: before / after.

iOS, 30 days: before After
iOS usage repeats the two source warnings iOS usage shows one combined warning

Progressive-range fixture captures: 1 day: 3 skipped / 7 days: 9 skipped / 30 days: 21 skipped / 90 days: 45 skipped.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 62f0cb4

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The change consolidates duplicated malformed-usage warnings across the existing server, web, and mobile usage flows, with focused tests covering source deduplication and retained diagnostics. It does not change product defaults, schemas, deployment behavior, or static-analysis configuration.

Walkthrough

Shared usage-formatting helpers now format malformed-record warnings and aggregate usage-source messages. The server and mobile and web usage screens use these helpers. Tests cover message aggregation and source filtering.

Include malformed records from missing sources.

UsageService can emit a non-Cursor source with status: "missing" and a positive malformedRecords count. The web and mobile usage views pass these sources to usageSourceMessages and render its result. The eligibility gate skips the source before aggregation, so the combined warning can omit those records.

Allow a missing source with malformed records to reach the existing aggregation block. Keep action sources and healthy sources excluded.

Verified in a real dev environment

checked exact head 62f0cb41dce4cb9e88067c28867f9fe478be620f on a linux boat vm. no code changes or pushes.

  • installed and ran github/main at 6575ce3250 in /home/user/main, then stopped it before running the pr. installed the exact pr head and ran it with an explicit isolated home. playwright used the repo dependency and /usr/bin/google-chrome.
  • created a project pointing to the real checkout and submitted actual codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the composer on both revisions. both returned their requested responses. usage displayed the real provider's recorded tokens.
  • on the pr, switched 30 days → past 24h → 90 days → 30 days. hourly/daily charts and totals rendered. hiding codex produced zero tokens and "no activity in this window"; restoring codex restored the totals.
  • all 12 existing packages/shared/src/usageFormat.test.ts tests passed through blacksmith-check. the pr currently reports 31 non-failing ci contexts (23 successful, 8 skipped). these checks do not prove the warning aggregation in the app.

pr usage with genuine codex histories and no malformed warnings

range switching and codex filtering in the running pr app. loading frames were trimmed; uploaded playback and seeking were checked.

pr usage range and provider filtering with real codex histories

Not verified

the changed warning aggregation remains unverified in the real app. main did not reproduce the duplicate warning: the genuine histories returned zero malformed records. codex threads share one transcript source, while the reported bug requires at least two distinct sources with positive malformed counts. no mocks, synthetic logs, fixtures, or demo data were used. consequently this pass cannot establish that the fix works as-is, despite passing unit tests and healthy-path checks. genuine affected histories on multiple sources are still needed.

cached malformed diagnostics from a missing directory, equal-count source deduplication, other-provider read failures and cursor notices were not exercised in the live app. native ios/android, electron shell, and remote/relay/tunnel multi-environment paths were not exercised on this linux vm. the local proxy returned Codex could not read usage (JSON-RPC -32600) on the limits view on both main and pr; usage history still worked.

setup incident: the first pr launch from the root checkout briefly selected the default shared t3 home. i stopped it and used an explicit isolated home for the checks above. no manual shared-state writes or cleanup were performed. task dev servers are stopped after verification.

media limitation: direct uploaded video playback and seeking worked in chrome. the pr discussion reopened and the comment text rendered, but an external-media render check timed out; inline media playback inside the pr discussion remains unverified.
