feat(web): mod-click files to open them in your editor or reveal them in Finder - #23535
To open a file from the diff viewer or Files panel in an editor, or reveal it in Finder, you had to right-click and go through the menu. In chat, ⌘-click on a file link already opened the preferred editor, but nothing else followed that convention, and nothing had a reveal shortcut.
Behavior
mod is ⌘ on macOS and Ctrl on Windows and Linux.
New marks what this PR adds. Everything else already worked this way.
Gesture
Chat file links
Diff file headers, chat changed-files card
Files panel tree

Open in preferred editor
New: open in preferred editor (was: same as a plain click)
Multi-select
mod+Shift-click

—
New: open in preferred editor (was: add a range to the selection)
mod+Alt-click
New: reveal in Finder / File Explorer / Files
New: reveal
New: reveal
The Files tree keeps mod-click for multi-select because that's how you pick several files to drag into the composer, and it's what Finder, VS Code, and Zed do. That gives up mod+Shift-click for adding a range to an existing selection; plain Shift-click still selects a range. Alt-click alone isn't used because Chromium turns it into a download in Electron.
How
resolveFileModifierClickAction in fileContextMenu.ts maps a click to open-in-editor, reveal, or nothing. The context-menu hook gains activateModifierClick, which reuses the existing menu actions and the same capability gates as the right-click menu (reveal only when the server supports it, the editor from the existing preferred-editor setting). When an action is unavailable it returns false, so the click falls back to its normal behavior.
The Files panel intercepts these clicks in the capture phase so the tree never sees them as selection changes. Directories work too.
The now-unused useFileContextMenuHandler is removed; the two callers use useFileContextMenu directly.
Documented in docs/user/keybindings.md.
Remote connections follow the Open In button's rule (useRemoteOpenState). On the server's own machine, the server launches the editor or file manager as before. When connected over SSH, or to a server that advertises a Tailscale or .local SSH route, editors open on your machine through their SSH URL (buildRemoteOpenUrl), and reveal is hidden because your file manager can't show remote files. With no SSH route, the editor shortcuts and menu items are hidden. This applies to the right-click "Open with" menu too, which used to launch the editor on the server even when you were on another machine. Chat file links keep their existing local-only gate. Mobile has no hover/modifier clicks, so it isn't affected.
Validation
Unit tests for the new mappings: mod-click and mod+Alt-click on diff headers and the changed-files card, mod+Shift-click in the tree, and the platform's mod key. Chat links keep their existing mod-click path, which this PR doesn't touch.

Visual evidence
Captured on Linux (mod = Ctrl) in a dev web client over the tailnet. The magenta panel is a test overlay, not app UI. It shows the keys held for each click and the shell.openInEditor request that the click sent. The editor and file-manager launchers on the server were stubbed because the host is headless, so the request payload is the proof.
Files tree: Ctrl+Shift-click opens the editor, selection unchanged
Diff header: Ctrl+Alt-click reveals, no file tab opened
Chat changed-files card: Ctrl-click opens the editor
Chat file links send no request over this remote connection. That's expected: since https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/7140 they hide editor and reveal actions unless the remote-open setting allows them, and this PR doesn't change that gate.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Adds non-configurable modifier-click shortcuts for opening files in an editor or revealing them in a file manager, with remote editor support. The changed default gesture behavior needs human acceptance, particularly the Files panel’s mod+Shift-click mapping.

Modifier-clicks can open files in an editor or reveal them in the file manager across diff, chat, and file-browser surfaces. Modifier-click selection behavior differs between the Files panel and other surfaces.

Summary
Resolve and activate modifier actions apps/web/src/fileContextMenu.ts, apps/web/src/fileContextMenu.test.ts
The shared resolver maps modifier keys to editor or reveal actions. The menu controller handles local and remote editor modes. Tests cover platform keys and tree-selection behavior.

Diff and chat file surfaces resolve modifier clicks and activate available actions. Existing file-opening behavior continues when an action is not handled.
The Files panel resolves modifier clicks during capture and activates actions for the clicked file or directory. The documentation describes the gestures and remote behavior.

Explanation
The title "feat(web): mod-click files to open them in your editor or reveal them in Finder" matches the main change. The changeset adds modifier-click handling that opens files in the preferred editor or reveals them in the file manager across diff headers, the chat changed-files card, the Files tree, and chat file links. The title is a conventional commit in plain language. Its only imprecision is that reveal targets Finder on macOS, while the change also covers File Explorer and other file managers.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has a Problem section and a Change section that explains the behavior, the remote-connection handling, and the Files-tree trade-off. It includes a Validation section with focused unit-test coverage, a check run, manual gesture results, and screenshots and a video. The Scope and approval section is not filled in. The description does not link the triaged issue or the maintainer approval comment, and it does not explain why the change qualifies for an exemption. The PR objectives mention a prior-approval discussion, but the description itself does not reference it. The template also asks for the model and harness, and the description includes them.
Resolution
Fill in the Scope and approval section. Link the triaged bug issue or the discussion that records explicit maintainer approval of the direction and scope, including the approval comment. The Problem section should also state the expected behavior more directly. If the change is a new workflow rather than a fix, the description must show that maintainers approved it. Consider replacing the Claude-attributed note with the model and harness line the template asks for, since the takeover note names a different model.

Do not report modifier clicks as handled before activation succeeds.
activateModifierClick returns true before openInEditor completes. If the command returns Failure, the helper only shows a toast. DiffPanel, FileBrowserPanel, and the changed-files chat card still suppress their normal click behavior.
Make the shared helper propagate activation failure, then preserve each caller's normal action: openDiffFile, tree selection, or onOpenTurnDiff. Do not only make the handler asynchronous, because the event suppression and caller-specific fallback still require explicit handling.

the prior-approval rule applies to this new file-opening workflow. the PR adds modifier gestures, repurposes the Files tree's mod-Shift range-selection action, and changes remote context-menu routing. these intentional behavior choices extend beyond configuring an existing option, and no maintainer approval is supplied. keep the useful report about hard-to-reach editor/reveal actions, discuss the gestures and remote behavior in Ideas, and obtain explicit direction and scope approval before reconsideration. this is an unexecuted dry-run closure draft.

Major · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift
Do not send a file path as a JetBrains project path.
When a remote user selects a JetBrains editor, this action passes the clicked file as absolutePath. buildRemoteOpenUrl puts that path in projectHint and ignores isFile. JetBrains defines projectHint as the path of the project to open. The URL therefore does not request the clicked file, while the action suppresses the normal click. Add a file-capable route, or make these per-file actions unavailable for JetBrains so the normal click continues. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

keeping the synchronous modifier-click contract: true means an available action was dispatched. it must consume the browser event before the asynchronous editor RPC completes. unavailable actions return false and retain the ordinary click; launch failures surface a toast so the user can retry. replaying a different selection or diff action after a failed explicit editor gesture would change the contributor's intended behavior across all callers, so this minor suggestion is declined within this takeover's scope.
addressed in 1d65e434e7: per-file remote actions now exclude JetBrains editors because their SSH URLs accept a project path. local editors and project-opening flows are unchanged. vp run check:changed passes through blacksmith, including adjacent browser tests and affected typechecks. both independent reviewers approve this head. native remote launches remain unverified on this headless vm.

Use the resolver's editor result as the editor gate for Markdown file links.
The reveal branch checks resolveFileModifierClickAction, but the editor branch checks shouldOpenMarkdownFileLinkInEditor, which only tests the platform Mod key and ignores Alt and Shift. Two modifier combinations therefore skip the resolver's fallback:
Mod+Shift resolves to null, which means no modifier action applies. The editor branch still opens the editor.
Mod+Alt without onReveal or revealLabel resolves to "reveal". The reveal branch is skipped, and the editor branch still opens the editor.
These clicks should take the normal browser or preview path. Gating the editor branch on the resolver result fixes both combinations. Plain Mod-click still resolves to "open-in-editor", so its behavior is unchanged.
