feat(web, mobile): image-only messages show a quiet caption instead of the agent prompt - #23613
attachment-only messages show an expandable "Image only" or "Attachment only" caption in web and mobile. reveal/hide preserves the original instruction and media placement. ordinary text, agent folds, stored messages, and provider payloads retain their behavior.
merged current main without rebasing and preserved its grouped-message action layout. copy and prompt-link controls remain suppressed for attachment-only instructions. the change remains seven files, +283/-19 against main.
blacksmith vp run check:changed against b823dcf5c6da passed format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, 87 tests across four files, and compiler checks. two independent source reviewers approved 57e43214a0d23d9f418e7440ba7af67b04bdf51b with no findings. existing actionable bot findings are addressed.
real chrome verification used codex luna and a two-image send, reveal/hide, image preview, and a 390px viewport. disclosure kept image bounds unchanged at 159.5x192. matched captures use the same persisted message with main's web row and the merged web row. uploaded images decode and the recording plays and seeks in chrome. native ios/android, electron, and a live claude turn remain unverified; thread-find coverage in this pass is from existing tests.
model and harness: gpt-6.1-sol through codex in t3 code.
… the agent prompt
A message sent with only attachments is stored with the bootstrap prompt
"[User attached one or more files without additional text. ...]" so the agent
knows to respond. Chat rendered that sentence as if the user had typed it.
Clients now show a small "Image only" caption in its place (or "Attachment
only" when files are included). Clicking it reveals the exact instruction and
"Hide" closes it. A lone photo fills the bubble and stays at its right edge
while the bubble grows. The stored message and the agent payload are unchanged,
and a message that adds text after the prompt still renders as typed.
Follows pingdotgg#16480, which made the prompt part of the image-only send path.

🟢 Lowchat/TimelineUserMessageRow.tsx:535
A video-only message is labeled Image only, even though it contains no image. Videos are rendered from userVideos and excluded from unchippedFiles, so this condition misses them; include userVideos.length in the attachment check.
🤖 Copy this AI Prompt to have your agent fix this:
In file @apps/web/src/components/chat/TimelineUserMessageRow.tsx around line 535:
A video-only message is labeled `Image only`, even though it contains no image. Videos are rendered from `userVideos` and excluded from `unchippedFiles`, so this condition misses them; include `userVideos.length` in the attachment check.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a localized presentation-only change that replaces a known attachment bootstrap prompt with an expandable caption in the existing web and mobile message views. Stored messages, agent payloads, ordinary text messages, and application contracts remain unchanged; the only noted issue is a below-threshold label mismatch for video-only messages.

A shared predicate recognizes attachment-only bootstrap text. Web and mobile timelines hide that text from the message body and provide a caption that reveals the instruction.
The shared predicate matches trimmed text to the attachment-only bootstrap prompt. Tests cover whitespace, appended text, and empty input.
Web timeline rendering apps/web/src/components/chat/TimelineUserMessageRow.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.browser.test.tsx
The timeline hides the prompt from the body and prompt links, and shows a caption that reveals it. A single image or video uses a single-column layout. Browser tests cover caption behavior, attachment types, agent messages, and messages with additional text.
Mobile thread rendering apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadFeed.tsx
The thread feed shows a toggleable caption for attachment-only messages and suppresses the message copy action.

When the web send resolves prompt effort to ultrathink, it persists the bootstrap prompt as Ultrathink:\n[User attached...]. The predicate only accepts the unprefixed text, so the timeline renders the prompt instead of the quiet caption. Accept the exact prefixed form. Exact comparison still rejects appended user text.

The predicate checks only the text. A manually entered or replayed bootstrap string with no attachments therefore hides the normal message text and shows Image only in both renderers.

Require an attachment before classifying the message as attachment-only.
isAttachmentOnlyBootstrapText checks only the message text. If a user sends the exact bootstrap prompt without an attachment, this code hides the message body and renders the caption. Because attachments.every(isImageAttachment) is true for an empty array, the caption incorrectly says Image only.
Require an attachment before setting attachmentOnly.

Require at least one attachment before a web message is classified as attachment-only.
attachmentOnly depends only on the message text. A message with no attachments can still get the bootstrap text on send, so the "Image only" caption can appear on a message that contains no image. Add an attachment-presence condition at this classification site, using the same attachment collections that the caption branch checks. The mobile call site needs its own change.

Still happening on desktop 0.1.3-nightly.20261026.3717 (macOS, Claude provider): a screenshot sent without text shows the bracketed instruction in my own bubble, as if I had typed it. main at 87ea18c still saves the sentence as the message text, so this PR's display-side fix still applies. I'd like to see it land once the conflicts with main are resolved.

Include pending attachments in attachment-only classification.
appendPendingThreadMessages creates the optimistic message with attachments: [], while the actual attachments remain on entry.pendingMessage. A pending image-only message can therefore keep the bootstrap instruction visible until acknowledgement.

The bubble only receives a width when the message has a wide Markdown block, a review comment, or an expanded fold. A collapsed photo-only bubble has none of these, so it sizes to its content. The short caption and the w-full photo can then leave the photo narrow on native.

thanks @tlconde. keeping this in presentation code preserves existing messages and provider input. i kept your commits and merged main into the original branch.
captions now require an attachment, recognize claude's generated ultrathink prefix, and label audio/files/videos correctly.
revealing the instruction keeps one or multiple previews in place. thread search can reveal and highlight it.
removed redundant comments and an unused data attribute. guest handling and agent-message folds remain intact.
verification: vp run check:changed passed through blacksmith: format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, and 52 tests. the regressions failed before their fixes. real chrome checks covered codex image-only sends and replies, reveal/hide, image preview, thread search, multiple-image alignment, and a narrow dark viewport. stored bootstrap text was preserved.
all 27 checks are green on 23b65e9f677ea4a14ba313d240fee52e6cf4bb4c, with no conflicts. both independent final code reviews approved this head. the document-preview timeouts from the previous run did not recur. native mobile, electron, and a live claude ultrathink turn remain unverified. both clients typecheck; the generated ultrathink variant has a shared regression check.
@tlconde, known low limits at the requested review-round cutoff: native optimistic image-only rows can briefly show the instruction before acknowledgement, and native full-width thumbnails may narrow with the short caption. these are documented for maria's review rather than widening the pass without native verification. the bot's assertion-style nit is also retained; the new tests use the existing awaited render/click helpers, and the asynchronous find assertion uses vi.waitFor.
the matched captures show the same real message and provider reply before and after. the recording shows reveal and hide. uploaded images render, and the uploaded video plays and seeks in chrome.
verified as-is at 23b65e9f677ea4a14ba313d240fee52e6cf4bb4c on this disposable linux boat vm. no source changes or pushes were needed.
reproduced on github/main (c677d5fc45), installed with vp i in ../main, and ran the real dev server in the background. a screenshot sent without text exposed the bracketed agent instruction.
stopped main before starting the exact pr head with vp i and background vp run dev. both used isolated empty state. created the project, thread, and messages through the web app using repo playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome, with codex gpt-6.1-sol through the local proxy. no mocks, seeded fixtures, or demo data.
the same screenshot and preceding user instruction now produce an Image only caption. codex described the screenshot correctly. reveal/hide shows the exact original instruction, preserves the image position, and leaves image preview working. copy message and copy prompt link are absent for the image-only row.
checked typed text plus image, including an actual clipboard copy; two-image send and reveal/hide without moving either image; thread search revealing and highlighting the hidden instruction; and reveal/hide at 390px in dark mode.
a generic file-only upload still renders its normal file chip and reaches codex. this composer stores a context link for that path, so it does not enter the bootstrap-caption branch.
short runtime transcript from the actual persisted message and codex session:
stored user text: [User attached one or more files without additional text. Respond using the conversation context and the attached files.]
stored attachments: 1 image/png
codex input: original bootstrap text + attached image path + input_image
codex reply: t3 code's light-mode new thread screen for pingdotgg/t3code...
single-image position before/after reveal: x819 y276 width238 height178
checks run through blacksmith-check: shared composerContextReferences.test.ts, 18 passed; browser MessagesTimeline.browser.test.tsx -t "attachment-only messages", 8 passed, 26 filtered out. github checks are green on this head. inspected the captures and verified uploaded images, recording playback, and seeking.
Not verified
native ios/android, electron, and macos/windows were not exercised. no android device is connected; ios requires a mac. narrow web verification does not establish native mobile behavior, including the optimistic-row and thumbnail-width limitations already noted in this discussion.
claude's live ultrathink path was not exercised because claude is unauthenticated here. the prefix helper has existing test coverage. audio/video bootstrap-caption labels and agent-attributed folds were covered by focused tests, rather than newly created real runtime messages.
addressed the two remaining mobile findings: classification and label now include optimistic pending attachments, and attachment-only bubbles receive a definite width. the earlier file-only label fix remains present. agent-attributed messages intentionally retain their existing folded rendering, as agreed in the withdrawn finding.
merged github/main without rebasing. preserved main's guest/automation presentation and media layout. restored the bootstrap instruction locally where main's new presentation normalization otherwise removed the caption input. stored messages and provider payloads are unchanged.
blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, shared/browser tests, agent context budget, and react compiler checks. real chrome verification through codex luna passed image-only send, reveal/hide, unchanged image bounds (238x178), and image preview. native mobile remains unverified: this vm has no connected android device or ios host.
final head c731ccf116c4e01c4d94500d837cb57297200e0d has 28 green checks and no conflicts. all actionable review threads are resolved. both independent reviewers approved the final changes. no rebase, force push, labels, or merge.
blacksmith check:changed passed all steps, including 69 tests across four files. chrome verified a real codex luna image-only send, reversible caption with unchanged image bounds, and image preview. uploaded images decode; the uploaded recording plays to completion and seeks in chrome.
remaining verification limits: native mobile and electron were not exercised. this vm has no attached android device or ios host. the final server-side find fix passed its existing shared test and the caption's browser test, but a fresh real-client attempt did not open the find bar with Ctrl+F, so integrated thread find remains unverified rather than claimed as passed.
merged current main into the existing branch and resolved the web action-layout conflict, preserving grouped actions and attachment-caption copy suppression. pushed 57e43214a0 without force. no additional feature changes.
blacksmith check:changed passed format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, 87 tests, and compiler checks. both independent source reviews approve this head. real chrome/codex luna verification passed two-image send, reveal/hide, stable image bounds, image preview, and narrow web. refreshed evidence is in the description. native mobile and electron remain unverified.
