🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Do not assume the current comparison uses the pull request’s merge base.

When the base branch changes, GitHub can calculate the pull-request patch and a current base-to-head comparison from different merge bases. This request can therefore select an old revision that does not match the patch. For example, after a merge commit makes the PR head an ancestor of the base tip, the comparison can select the head itself; file expansion then reads the new contents as the old contents. Select the revision that corresponds to the pull-request patch, and cover this case with a service test. (docs.github.com)

Review comment at
@packages/source-control-github/src/server/GitHubPullRequestApi.ts at line 1356:
Update the compare request using owner, name, baseRef, and headRef so it selects
the revision corresponding to the pull-request patch rather than relying on the
current base-to-head comparison’s merge base. Add a service test for the case
where a merge commit makes the PR head an ancestor of the base tip, verifying
file expansion uses the correct old contents.
