fix(editors): find JetBrains IDEs whose Toolbox script is named idea1 - #23743
JetBrains Toolbox writes a launch script for each installed IDE. When another installed version already has idea, Toolbox names the new script idea1, idea2 and so on. Discovery only checks the canonical name, so if the numbered script is the only launcher, T3 Code leaves IntelliJ IDEA out of the "Open in" menu. The same happens for every JetBrains IDE, on all three platforms (scripts/idea1, or scripts\idea1.cmd on Windows).
To reproduce: put an executable idea1 that launches IntelliJ IDEA in ~/.local/share/JetBrains/Toolbox/scripts, keep idea off PATH, and open the editor menu.
Change
resolveEditorCommand in packages/shared/src/editor.ts now lists the Toolbox scripts directory and accepts <command><digits> (plus .cmd on Windows) after the canonical script, in number order (idea2 before idea10). Exact matching keeps ideavim from counting.
Discovery reads each script, never runs it, and finds the program its launch lines run: a line's first word, or the operand of exec, open -na or start (skipping start switches such as /min and /d <dir>, and its quoted title). Leading $HOME/, ${HOME}/ and ~/ are expanded. Other paths, such as JAVA_HOME="..." or cd "...", don't count.
A numbered script counts only while one of those programs exists, so one left behind by a removed IDE is skipped.
The canonical script is still tried first, but it is now dropped when its programs are all missing paths. A stale canonical script used to hide a working numbered one. It is kept as before when that can't be proven: nothing in it is recognized, it uses a variable other than HOME or the forwarded arguments (such as $IDE_HOME), it has an escaped space, or any other path it names still exists (as with env "/opt/idea/bin/idea").
Only JetBrains editors read the directory. Nothing changes for other editors, including Linux's zeditor preference for Zed.
Scope and approval
This is the second half of #15933. Julius's triage named it: "A Toolbox script named idea1 misses the same way" (#15933 (comment)). #16246 fixed the versioned-bundle half, and Theo's closing comment says this part is still open (#15933 (comment)).
Verification
One table in apps/server/src/process/externalLauncher.test.ts calls resolveEditorCommand directly, with real temp directories and a home path with spaces:
win32: a stale idea.cmd, and idea1.cmd running start /min /d "<dir>" "" "<ide>". Expects idea1.cmd.
linux ($HOME) and darwin (${HOME}, open -na): stale idea and idea1 next to working numbered scripts; on linux idea1 also sets JAVA_HOME and cds to an existing path, and idea10 sits beside idea2. Expects idea2.
Canonical idea kept: a missing bare path followed by exec env "$IDE_HOME", exec ~/<ide> or env "<ide>" (linux), or by an escaped or single-quoted working target (darwin). Expects idea.
vp test run apps/server/src/process/externalLauncher.test.ts: with main's editor.ts, 3 failed and 30 passed; on this branch, 33 passed. vp run check:changed passes.
Real app on Linux, web and desktop dev builds, each with seeded state and XDG_DATA_HOME holding only JetBrains/Toolbox/scripts/idea1, which runs a stub IDE by absolute path. No JetBrains launcher is on PATH. In the "Choose editor" menu, main shows no editor on web and only Files on desktop. This branch lists IntelliJ IDEA on both.
Real Toolbox installs with two IDE versions. Tests and the app run used stub scripts. Public copies of generated launchers use absolute targets on Linux and Windows and a $HOME target on macOS, but they include user edits.
Windows and macOS in the real app; unit tests only.
A custom Toolbox scripts location; discovery still only looks in the default directory.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused editor-discovery bug fix that adds numbered JetBrains Toolbox launcher detection across the existing macOS, Linux, and Windows paths. Existing canonical launchers and non-JetBrains behavior remain unchanged, and the new behavior is covered by platform-specific tests.

Walkthrough
resolveEditorCommand parses JetBrains Toolbox launch scripts and checks their IDE targets. It uses those checks to select Toolbox script candidates on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Tests cover script selection across platforms and launcher forms.
Changes: Toolbox Script Discovery
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Parse and check Toolbox scripts packages/shared/src/editor.ts
The resolver identifies launch targets, expands supported HOME-based paths, and checks absolute targets. It retains the canonical script unless its target is positively missing, and includes numbered scripts only when their targets exist.
Integrate platform discovery and tests packages/shared/src/editor.ts, apps/server/src/process/externalLauncher.test.ts
macOS and Windows discovery uses filtered Toolbox script candidates. Linux derives the scripts directory from XDG_DATA_HOME or falls back to $HOME/.local/share. Parameterized tests cover selection across platforms and launcher forms.
The new tests can fail on machines with IntelliJ installed outside Toolbox. A previously reported Linux launcher-selection edge case also remains open. These are bounded risks, but the test should be isolated before merging.

Validate the canonical Linux Toolbox script before prioritizing it.
isCommandAvailable only checks whether the script is executable. A stale idea script can therefore precede a valid idea1 script. Validate the canonical Toolbox script before adding its directory to the candidate list.

Toolbox names a launch script idea1, idea2, ... when another installed
version already has idea. Editor discovery only checked the canonical
name, so such installs were reported as not installed.

Test numbered-script selection through the resolver.
These cases test the changed resolveEditorCommand selection logic through two unchanged launcher methods. Add the Windows, Linux, and macOS cases to the existing direct resolver test instead. This keeps the test at the lowest layer that fails for this change. As per coding guidelines, “Test at one layer: the lowest one that fails on main.” As per path instructions, “Extend an existing test or table when it fits.”

A canonical Toolbox script whose IDE was removed masked a working numbered
script on every platform. The canonical script is now dropped only when its
recognized launch targets are all missing, and kept when none are recognized.
`start /min "" "<ide>"` lines took the empty title as the program; the title
is now the first quoted word wherever it sits, and single-quoted paths parse.
The numbered-script tests now call resolveEditorCommand directly in one table.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A canonical script that names a missing path but launches through a
shell variable (`exec "$IDE_HOME"`) was dropped, hiding an installed IDE.
Any launch command whose program is not a plain path now leaves the
script's target unknown, so the canonical script stays. `start /d <dir>`
no longer takes the directory as the window title.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A Toolbox script can launch its IDE with a bare first word, so
`"$IDE_HOME" "$@"` without `exec` escaped the launch-command check. A
program that still holds a `$` or `%` variable now leaves the script's
target unknown wherever it appears, and launchedProgram returns a plain
string again.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…path
A canonical script whose launcher the parser does not know, such as
`env "/opt/idea/bin/idea"`, read as missing when another line named a
removed path. It now stays when any absolute path in it still exists.
Table rows get case names so their titles are distinct.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`exec env "$IDE_HOME" "$@"` passed the variable as an argument, so the
per-program check missed it and a working canonical script was dropped.
Any variable other than HOME or the forwarded arguments now leaves the
script's target unknown.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`open -na /opt/IntelliJ\ IDEA.app` split at the escaped space, so a
working canonical script read as missing. An escaped space now leaves the
script's target unknown, like a variable does.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`exec ~/apps/idea/bin/idea` was not recognized, so a working canonical
script next to a stale path read as missing. `~/` now expands to HOME
like `$HOME/`. The test IDE moves to a path without spaces so an unquoted
tilde target works; the temp home still has spaces.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
merged main without rebasing and preserved the two-file launcher change. fixed one remaining stale-script case: an existing absolute env wrapper no longer counts as an installed ide target. added a regression row to the existing launcher test table and reproduced its failure before the fix. isolated that table from host editor installations after the new bot finding.
blacksmith verification passed on the final source: vp run check:changed (format, lint, knip, graphql, 33-package typecheck, 36 tests). all 35 external launcher tests pass. two independent code reviewers approve 2429ef8412. confirmed and resolved all four bot findings. native jetbrains installations on macos and windows remain unverified.
