fix(pi): extensions can keep Pi alive while their background work runs - #24207
Unproven: the 40-minute browser run below used an earlier revision. The latest lifecycle fixes have not had another 40-minute run or a packaged desktop test.
Pi has no way for an extension to say "I still have work running". So 30 minutes after a turn ends, T3 treats the Pi session as idle and stops the process. Any background command an extension started dies with it, and its result never reaches the thread.
Fix
An extension holds a Pi status under the t3:background key while its work runs, and clears it when the work ends:
ctx.ui.setStatus("t3:background:build","Build running");// ...when the command exitsctx.ui.setStatus("t3:background:build",undefined);pi.sendMessage({customType: "build",content: result,display: true},{triggerTurn: true});
Each non-empty t3:background or t3:background:<job> status becomes a pending background task on the thread, the same roster Claude's background tasks use. That gives Pi what Claude already has:
The idle release waits while work is pending. It already does this for every adapter that reports background work, and it gives up after about four idle hours.
The thread shows Waiting on background task with a Stop button. Stop ends the Pi process and the work with it.
When the job finishes and the extension wakes the agent, the reply lands in the thread as a normal native wake.
Pi invalidates outgoing extension contexts after all shutdown handlers finish. Those handlers can await cleanup while an old job still reports progress. T3's bridge therefore marks both shutdown and the next session_start. The adapter clears the outgoing roster at shutdown and ignores further job statuses until the start marker. T3 loads its bridge before user extensions so that marker precedes their start-hook statuses. A vetoed switch preserves the existing work. Reload keeps the thread binding. Pi 1.4 invalidates old extension contexts after shutdown handlers finish; it does not guarantee that their child processes have stopped.
Known protocol limit: extensions must stop reporting outgoing work before their shutdown handler returns. Cached UI handles can bypass Pi 1.4 context invalidation, and older supported Pi versions invalidate fewer contexts. Such late reports are indistinguishable from current jobs after the start marker. The Pi guide documents this extension responsibility.
Known gap: if the foreground turn fails while a job is pinned, the run stops listening (as it does for every provider), so the thread can keep showing Waiting after that job clears its status without waking the agent. The next turn start re-sends the roster, and otherwise the idle release stops the process 30 minutes later and clears it.
The Pi user guide documents the key.
Evidence
Real Pi 1.4.0 against a dev server, in the browser client. A test extension uses Pi's faux model. On "start job" it starts a 40 minute sleep, holds t3:background:job, and wakes the agent when the command exits.
Before (main): 30 idle minutes after the turn, T3 stopped Pi. The job died and no reply ever came.
After (this PR), while the job runs: the thread is Waiting on the job.
After, when the job ends: at the 30 minute mark the server logged idle-release-deferred. The job ran its full 40 minutes, the Waiting state cleared, and the result woke the thread.
Stop: a second thread started the same job and I pressed Stop. Its Pi process and job ended, the Waiting state cleared, and the first thread's job kept running.

Adapter tests cover task rosters, vetoed and completed session switches, extension reloads, rollback, and Stop. Bridge tests cover shutdown and startup markers with MCP enabled and with the permission-only bridge.
The latest review fixes make registration fail when the event-pump drain is rejected or times out, without terminating Pi just because of the timeout. Starting a turn also keeps the current task roster when statuses change during model selection. Three regression cases failed on 56dabb5 before these fixes.
vp test run packages/provider-pi/src/server/adapter.test.ts \
-t "event drain is|background task changes while turn model"

after: 3 passed
Additional regressions cover progress from outgoing contexts during shutdown, including session replacement and extension reload. The final vp run check:changed passed format, lint, knip, typechecks for five affected packages, and all 125 tests across three files.
A fresh runtime check used real Pi 1.4.0 with the latest generated bridge and an isolated test extension. Both new_session and extension reload produced this order:
The adapter regressions verify that it ignores the outgoing progress and lists only the replacement job. A separate Codex review found no remaining actionable code findings.
The packaged desktop app runs this same server, so I tested through the dev server and browser rather than a desktop build.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds default lifecycle-extension injection and a cross-cutting background-task protocol that changes when Pi processes remain alive, when threads show waiting, and how session switches and Stop behave. Its production impact spans Pi lifecycle handling and orchestration state, with limited final long-running/packaged verification noted in the PR description.

Walkthrough
The Pi adapter tracks extension-reported background work, publishes task rosters to provider threads, and accounts for that work during session changes and process restarts. The generated extension reports session lifecycle markers, and Pi launch arguments place the configured T3 extension before user-specified arguments.
The generated extension reports session start and shutdown markers. The adapter accepts t3:background and job-specific status keys, sanitizes descriptions, and updates tracked tasks. Tests and documentation describe status handling and extension lifecycle requirements.
Publish tasks and bind them to threads packages/provider-pi/src/server/adapter.ts, packages/provider-pi/src/server/adapter.test.ts
Provider threads receive the current task roster. The adapter includes tracked tasks in pending-work checks and preserves task data during turn installation and rollback.
Handle session changes and process stops packages/provider-pi/src/server/adapter.ts, packages/provider-pi/src/server/adapter.test.ts
The adapter drains queued events after session switches, handles task ownership through teardown and reload, and stops Pi on restart when work remains. Tests cover replacement, reload, registration failures, and interruption.
Order the T3 extension in Pi launch arguments packages/provider-pi/src/server/mcpInjection.ts, packages/provider-pi/src/server/mcpInjection.test.ts
The configured T3 extension appears before user launch arguments. Other explicit extensions remain in the arguments, and tests cover bridge ordering.

Explanation
The title "fix(pi): extensions can keep Pi alive while their background work runs" matches the main change. The PR adds t3:background status handling so Pi sessions stay alive while extension background work runs. It follows the conventional commit format and is specific. It does not cover every detail, such as the shutdown and session-marker lifecycle handling, but that is expected.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #24187 requires Pi to stay alive while an extension background command runs and to receive the result when the command ends. The adapter maps non-empty t3:background and t3:background:<job> statuses to pending tasks, preserves the task roster across lifecycle operations, defers idle release, and supports Stop. The bridge emits shutdown and startup markers so outgoing status updates do not attach to a replacement session. Tests cover task rosters, switches, reload, rollback, Stop, event-drain failures, and model-selection races. The extension can clear its status and wake the thread with triggerTurn: true.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #24187. The adapter implements background-task tracking. The bridge and launch ordering implement session-boundary handling. The tests and Pi documentation support these behaviors. No unrelated change is evidenced.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section explains the 30-minute idle release that stops Pi and kills extension background jobs. The Change section explains the t3:background status key, the pending-task roster, the Stop control, and the session lifecycle markers. The Verification section gives browser evidence, an extension log, a test command with before and after counts, and a check:changed result. The Scope and approval section does not link an approved issue or discussion. It cites issue #24187 with 'Closes', but it does not explain whether a maintainer approved the direction. The description also states that the latest revision lacks a second 40-minute run and a packaged desktop test. Those gaps are disclosed.
Resolution
Add explicit approval evidence to the Scope and approval section. Link the triaged bug issue #24187 and include a maintainer approval comment or discussion that approves this direction and scope. The PR cites #24187 but does not show that a maintainer approved the direction. Also consider rerunning the 40-minute browser check on the latest revision, or state the remaining verification gap clearly in the Verification section. The description already says that run used an earlier revision.

… work
Pi has no native signal for extension work that outlives a turn, so T3
released the Pi process after 30 idle minutes and killed that work.
An extension now holds a status under the `t3:background` key (or
`t3:background:<job>`) while it works, and the idle release waits for it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Pinned work now shows as the thread's pending background tasks, keeps the
run listening like Claude's background tasks, and Stop ends the process.
Pins are dropped when Pi replaces its native session, because the outgoing
extension context can no longer clear them.

A job that cleared its status while a switch was in flight came back when
the switch was vetoed. Clears now also leave the restore snapshot, and
status updates follow the last bound thread, which survives the veto.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Dropping the outgoing work before the switch outcome was known closed the
run that listened for it, so a vetoed switch restored work nobody tracked.
The work now stays put until Pi answers. A replacement drops the outgoing
session's keys after draining Pi's earlier events, so a progress update an
old job sent mid-switch no longer lands on the new session.

Guessing session ownership from keys dropped a replacement job that reused
an outgoing key and listed replacement jobs on the outgoing thread. T3's
bridge extension now sets a marker status from session_shutdown, the point
where Pi's own TUI clears statuses. The adapter clears the outgoing roster
there, and statuses set after it wait for the replacement binding.

Drain lifecycle events before publishing the replacement roster.
If Pi sends session_shutdown and replacement-session statuses before its switch response, registerThread can receive the response before the event pump handles those statuses. Line 2304 then copies outgoing tasks into the replacement thread. A late shutdown marker can subsequently clear the replacement tasks. The new jobs no longer keep Pi alive. Wait for an event-pump barrier after a successful lifecycle response and before building either replacement-thread roster, as rollback does at Lines 3008-3015. Pi emits shutdown before starting the replacement session. (github.com)

A reload tears extensions down and starts them again in the same session,
with no new T3 registration, so new background work had no owner. The
bridge now reports Pi's shutdown reason, and a reload keeps the binding.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
On CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding (adapter.ts:2304, drain lifecycle events before publishing the replacement roster): I checked it and kept the code as it is.
registerThread doesn't build the replacement roster when the new_session/switch_session reply arrives. It first sends get_state and waits for Pi's answer. Pi writes the teardown marker, the replacement's start-hook statuses and both replies to stdout in that order. The event queue only waits on a running turn or a rollback, and registration refuses both. So by the time get_state comes back, every status Pi sent before the switch reply has been applied.
Rollback needs an explicit barrier because it rebinds straight after its fork reply, with no further round trip; it already has one.
fc673f6 adds a test that sends the marker, a new status and the switch reply in one burst. It checks that the replacement lists only its own job and owns it.
The replacement roster relied on the get_state round trip giving the event
pump time to apply Pi's teardown marker. Await a pump barrier instead, as
rollback does, so the ordering no longer depends on timing.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Follow-up: a second review raised the same ordering point, and the get_state round trip is a timing argument, not a guarantee. So I added the barrier in 56dabb5. After a successful new_session/switch_session reply, registerThread now waits on a pump barrier (t3.drain, bounded by the normal request timeout) before it builds the replacement binding, the same way rollback does after fork. The burst test from fc673f6 still covers the case. There's no seam to stall the pump in tests, so it can't force the race; it guards the ordering.
Please review the current head, 56dabb5. The session-switch event-pump barrier requested in the previous review is now in place before the replacement thread roster is built. Required CI checks pass and all inline review threads are resolved.

Keep active background tasks when installing the turn.
startTurn awaits model selection and prompt payload resolution before it installs the turn. Status events handled during those awaits replace state.providerThread with a copy that carries the current pendingBackgroundTasks. The assignment then restores turnInput.providerThread, which still has the task list from before those awaits. Rosters published after this point omit newly added tasks or keep finished ones until the next setStatus event. Copy the current task list into the installed thread:

Please review e597c64. Both findings from review 5637981514 are fixed:
Registration rejects an unconfirmed event drain instead of building a stale replacement roster.
Turn installation copies the current background tasks after model selection, preserving both additions and removals during that await.
The three regressions failed before the fixes and now pass. A separate review also found that later shutdown handlers can publish outgoing progress after T3's shutdown marker. The bridge now marks startup too and loads first; the adapter ignores background statuses between those markers. Tests cover session replacement and reload, and real Pi 1.4.0 confirms the event order.
Final check:changed passed format, lint, knip, typechecks for five affected packages, and 125 tests across three files. The independent Codex review found no remaining actionable code findings. The PR description includes the runtime transcript and keeps the earlier-revision 40-minute test and missing packaged desktop test disclosed.

Prepending the whole T3 bridge so its session_start marker ran first also
moved the MCP and permission bridge ahead of user extensions, changing tool

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Pushed the bridge-order correction in 0f6bd5503c. A lifecycle-only sentinel loads before user extensions; the MCP/permission bridge keeps its original last or explicitly configured position. The existing session-drain and model-selection fixes are unchanged.
Verification on that revision:
The new regression tests failed on the preceding published head. All 137 Pi tests and the provider-pi typecheck passed after the correction. Two independent code reviews found no blocking code defect; the process-lifetime and permission-registration scope still requires human approval.
Real T3 server, Pi 1.4.0, openai/gpt-6.1-sol: an actual idle-release deferral occurred after 30 minutes. The same Pi and child process survived 31 idle minutes; completion woke the same provider thread without another user message and cleared its roster.
Separate background Stop preserved the first job; veto and reload passed. Canonical MCP invocation and user-hook-before-permission ordering were observed. Approval decline produced protocol rejection; an independent side-effect sentinel was not checked.
The full lifecycle matrix does not pass. An extension calling ctx.newSession() itself starts replacement work without a roster entry, and subsequent Stop leaves that work alive. Focused review traced this to the unchanged non-reload owner reset and missing native-session rebind in the preceding published head. This is a real follow-up gap outside the reported idle-release sequence; no claim is made that every lifecycle variant passes.
Server-only correction; no render changes. Packaged desktop and minimum-supported Pi were not exercised. CI on the new head and maintainer acceptance of the narrow scope remain pending. No merge or gate label was applied.

real pi 1.4.0 through the web client deferred the 30-minute idle release, completed its background command after 35+ minutes, woke the client and cleared waiting. that long run used 19a92992e5; the final commit strengthens the completion probe. stop was exercised on the final head: waiting cleared and both pi and its child process exited.
@shivamhwp: extension-driven newSession ownership/native rebinding and idle reload's temporary empty roster remain separate followups, alongside the foreground-failure and cached-ui-handle limits already discussed. these paths are outside this focused idle-release takeover. packaged desktop, mobile/relay, older supported pi versions and paid-model execution remain unverified.
Another real use case for this protocol: background subagents from pstack's Pi package.
pstack's agent tool with run_in_background: true starts each subagent as its own pi --mode rpc process and returns at once. The parent turn ends, and pstack wakes the parent with sendMessage(..., { triggerTurn: true }) when the subagent exits. On current T3, that subagent dies when the idle release stops the parent Pi. pstack records it as stopped, and no result reaches the thread. A long implementation or review subagent hits this easily.
I tested this PR at d2d9b2a with a small extension that mirrors pstack's running agents into t3:background:<job> statuses. It reads pstack's pstack-agents session entries once a second and sets or clears one status per running agent. It also clears all of them in session_shutdown.
Setup: Linux, Pi 1.4.0, the pstack Pi package, a dev server from this branch with no seeded data, and Claude Sonnet as the model. To keep the run short, I changed DEFAULT_IDLE_TIMEOUT_MS to 2 minutes locally. Two Pi instances were identical except that one loaded the extension. Each thread started one background subagent that runs sleep 300, replied, and ended its turn.

Pending background tasks after the turn

pstack agent: sleeper
At the 2-minute idle release
Pi released. pstack recorded the subagent as stopped before it replied.
idle-release-deferred logged for that session. The subagent kept running.
When the subagent finished (about 5 minutes)
Nothing; the subagent was gone.
The completion woke the thread as a second run. The reply arrived with no user message, and the pending tasks cleared to [].
So the protocol works for pstack with no pstack changes. One extension maps its existing records to statuses. Not checked: Stop during a pstack subagent, session switches, and the real 30-minute timeout.

Unproven: the 40-minute browser run below used an earlier revision. The latest lifecycle fixes have not had another 40-minute run or a packaged desktop test.
Closes #24187
Problem
Pi has no way for an extension to say "I still have work running". So 30 minutes after a turn ends, T3 treats the Pi session as idle and stops the process. Any background command an extension started dies with it, and its result never reaches the thread.
Fix
An extension holds a Pi status under the
t3:backgroundkey while its work runs, and clears it when the work ends:Each non-empty
t3:backgroundort3:background:<job>status becomes a pending background task on the thread, the same roster Claude's background tasks use. That gives Pi what Claude already has:Pi invalidates outgoing extension contexts after all shutdown handlers finish. Those handlers can await cleanup while an old job still reports progress. T3's bridge therefore marks both shutdown and the next
session_start. The adapter clears the outgoing roster at shutdown and ignores further job statuses until the start marker. T3 loads its bridge before user extensions so that marker precedes their start-hook statuses. A vetoed switch preserves the existing work. Reload keeps the thread binding. Pi 1.4 invalidates old extension contexts after shutdown handlers finish; it does not guarantee that their child processes have stopped.Known protocol limit: extensions must stop reporting outgoing work before their shutdown handler returns.
On "start job" it starts a 40 minute
sleep, holdst3:background:job, and wakes the agent when the command exits. Before (main): 30 idle minutes after the turn, T3 stopped Pi. The job died and no reply ever came.
After (this PR), while the job runs: the thread is Waiting on the job.
After, when the job ends: at the 30 minute mark the server logged
idle-release-deferred. The job ran its full 40 minutes, the Waiting state cleared, and the result woke the thread.Stop: a second thread started the same job and I pressed Stop.

Three regression cases failed on

The packaged desktop app runs this same server, so I tested through the dev server and browser rather than a desktop build.
