fix(client-runtime): slow foreground probes keep live sessions connected - #24309
Returning to the web or desktop client while the server is busy can make one foreground health probe miss its 15-second deadline. The client then replaces an otherwise live session, even while other WebSocket messages arrive. Reproduced on Linux with the real web dev server by suppressing one foreground server.probe; the original socket closed at 15.08 seconds.
Change
Keep the session through the first foreground probe timeout and automatically try one more probe with the existing deadline. A successful follow-up keeps the lease; a second timeout reconnects without another foreground event. Explicit retry, network signals, definite failures, and native mobile resume behavior retain their existing recovery rules.
Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. The reproduced defect is premature session replacement; composer typing remained editable during reproduction.
Verification
Focused connection tests: 135 passed across 10 files, including automatic follow-up success, bounded replacement after two misses, and explicit retry during a foreground probe.
Client-runtime typecheck: passed with exit 0; existing Effect suggestions only.
Targeted lint: no errors; existing polling-helper warning outside the changed lines. Diff whitespace check passed.
Two independent full-diff reviewers (GPT-6.1-Sol and Claude Opus 5.5) returned MERGE on the fixed revision after the missing automatic retry was corrected.
Before runtime transcript: base closes the original socket at 15.08 seconds despite incoming traffic. After runtime transcript: automatic follow-up at 15.005 seconds, original socket remains open at 49.953 seconds, no reconnect warning, composer editable.
The required full before/after recording matrix and pixel diffs are incomplete. Browser/tool stalls and an interruption exhausted the capture budget. These transcripts verify runtime behavior and do not replace the missing recordings. Proof audit pass 2 returned INSUFFICIENT: no complete before/after matrix cell is established. This PR is not represented as fully verified.
Missing matrix proof: all AFTER recordings; 390-wide BEFORE recordings; validated dark BEFORE footage; network override at 13 seconds on both revisions; paired zero-threshold and thresholded pixel diffs; a committed replay fixture.
Desktop/Electron and Windows were not exercised. Native mobile uses separate resume signals and its behavior is unchanged; contracts, providers, and connection routes are unchanged.
Implementation and tests: Claude Opus 5.5 through the Claude harness; reviews and proof: GPT-6.1-Sol and Claude Opus 5.5 through T3 Code delegated tasks. Coordinated by GPT-6.1-Sol through the Codex harness in T3 Code.
… live session
A busy server that missed a single application-active health probe
deadline had its healthy websocket replaced. The connected lease now
tolerates one missed foreground probe; an answered probe resets that
tolerance, and a second consecutive miss replaces the session as before.
Probe failures, quick probes, and long resumes are unchanged.

… definitely
An explicit retry that arrives near the end of an application-active probe
has a later deadline than the probe, but it asks for a definite answer, so
the one-miss foreground tolerance must not swallow it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The first tolerated foreground probe timeout ended the probe without a
second attempt, so a session whose transport kept answering pings but
whose app RPC stalled stayed connected until the user refocused. The
first miss now starts one follow-up probe with the same deadline; its
answer keeps the lease and its miss replaces the session.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped client-runtime bug fix that gives a foreground liveness probe one bounded retry while preserving existing recovery behavior for explicit retries and other signals. The accompanying tests cover the success, repeated-timeout, and interruption cases.

The supervisor now gives an application-active health probe one follow-up after a timeout. A further timeout follows the existing failure path. A retry or network signal during probing disables this tolerance. New tests cover these cases.
The supervisor identifies application-active probes and allows one timeout before failure. It starts a follow-up probe with a fresh deadline after the first timeout. A retry or network signal during probing disables the allowance.
Tests cover a successful follow-up that keeps the session, two timeouts that replace it, and an explicit retry that replaces the session when its deadline expires.
pingdotgg/t3code#24064: Both changes modify how EnvironmentSupervisor handles application-active wakeups. This PR preserves the reconnect retry ladder across repeated foreground wakeups.

Returning online during a stalled foreground probe can delay reconnection by one extra probe deadline. This is a bounded edge case, but the network-signal behavior should be corrected or explicitly accepted before merging.

Explanation
The title "fix(client-runtime): slow foreground probes keep live sessions connected" matches the main change. The supervisor now tolerates one timed-out foreground probe and runs one automatic follow-up probe before it replaces a live session. The title is a conventional commit, is specific, and names the affected package. It does not cover the tests or the retry-rule details, which is expected for a title.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section gives the reproduction and the 15-second deadline failure. The Change section explains the one-retry rule and the cases that keep their existing recovery behavior. The Scope section links issue #7231 and states that the issue was triaged. The Verification section lists focused test counts, typecheck and lint results, and before/after runtime transcripts. It also states that the before/after recording matrix and pixel diffs are missing, and that the PR is not fully verified. The author states these gaps clearly, so the description is complete enough to pass.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #7231 requires that one missed foreground health probe must not tear down a live session. The reviewed head meets this requirement in packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.ts. The new isForegroundProbe helper marks application-active wakeups. When the first foreground probe times out, the code interrupts it, forks a new probe with a fresh probeTimeout deadline, and continues the loop (toleratesMiss is set to false). A second timeout returns the existing ConnectionTransientError({ reason: "timeout" }), so the replacement path still runs after two misses. Definite probe failures take a different branch and are not tolerated. An explicit retry or network signal received during the probe sets toleratesMiss to false, so those signals keep their existing definite-answer behavior. This matches the issue's expected behavior: one slow answer is not a disconnect. The supervisor.test.ts head blob confirms that Queue is imported for the new tests. The test bodies were beyond the readable output limit, so the three described tests (automatic follow-up success, two-miss replacement, and explicit retry during a foreground probe) were not read directly. This does not change the verdict because the implementation is verified from the source diff. Parent or sibling issues (#4773, #4137, #5198) are background only and add no requirements.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The reviewed change set consists of two files: packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.ts (+17/-1, the foreground-tolerance logic) and packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.test.ts (+98/-0, the supporting tests and the Queue import). Every hunk in supervisor.ts is directly tied to the #7231 objective: the foreground-probe classification, the single follow-up probe, and the rule that non-foreground signals disable the tolerance. The test additions support that same behavior. The PR description states that contracts, providers, and connection routes are unchanged, and the summary lists no other files. No change was found that lacks a connection to #7231. Remaining proof gaps in the PR description (missing before/after recordings, pixel diffs, and desktop or Windows runs) are verification gaps, not code changes, so they do not affect this assessment.

Clear tolerated misses for every NetworkChanged signal.
While a foreground probe is stalled, an unknown → online signal can arrive. probeTimeoutFor returns undefined for that signal, so the current branch does not clear toleratesMiss. The first timeout can therefore start a follow-up probe.
Handle NetworkChanged before checking signalTimeout, while preserving the existing rule for other timed signals.

CodeRabbit network-status finding: these signals intentionally differ. NetworkChanged with online or unknown does not request a health probe, matching the existing probeTimeoutFor policy. Offline reports and actual network-path changes (Wakeup("network-changed")) request strict probes and already remove the foreground allowance. Clearing it for a positive or unknown connectivity report would reintroduce premature teardown of a slow foreground probe. The automatic follow-up still bounds recovery. Verified against the pinned supervisor, signal producers, and existing route tests; no change needed.
