fix(clients): show Input for async questions while the agent works - #24922
A pending async question (request_user_input_async, responseCapability: { type: "message" }) left no trace in the thread list while the agent kept working. The sidebar, status pill and mobile list showed only Working, and no attention notification fired. The question only appeared once the provider turn ended.
Since #15430, presentThreadShell (packages/client-runtime/src/state/models.ts) clears hasPendingUserInput for nonblocking questions while the runtime is preparing, starting or running. The question is still in source.pendingRuntimeRequest, but resolveSidebarThreadStatus, resolveThreadStatusPill and resolveThreadListV2Status read only the flag. Attention notifications and the background screen-reader announcer derive from the same flag, so nothing in the list pointed at the question.
Fix
New shared threadHasOpenQuestion helper in client-runtime: true when hasPendingUserInput is set or the shell's own pending request is a user_input.
The thread-list status resolvers (web sidebar v2 row, legacy sidebar and status pill, mobile thread list) use it, so a pending async question shows the existing Input / Awaiting Input status even while the agent works. This is the product call for this fix: the user still has to answer the question, so the list shows it the same way as any other question.
While the agent keeps working past that question, the list also keeps a Working cue next to Input, so the agent doesn't look stalled (the [Bug]: Async questions make a running thread show as Awaiting Input #15258 complaint). The cue comes from threadWorksPastQuestion: the request is nonblocking, the runtime is active, and the agent is not blocked on a thread wait.
Web sidebar v2 row: (?) Input ◌ 3m, accessible status "Input, Working".
Status pill: "Awaiting Input · Working" in the text, tooltip and aria-label, with the existing activity pulse.
Mobile row: Input, then the Working symbol and timer; VoiceOver reads "Input, Working".
The web background announcer and the mobile snooze-refusal alert use the same helper. Without it, mobile told the user the thread was "still starting a turn" when a pending question was what blocked snoozing.
Web attention notifications are now keyed by the thread's own pending request id rather than latestRunId (falling back to the run for subagent, guest, failed and limited states). Async questions now raise attention mid-run, and the run-scoped key would have (a) hidden a blocking secret that arrives after an async question in the same run, and (b) re-notified the same question whenever a follow-up message queued a new run.
Unchanged from #15430: hasPendingUserInput itself, Working shelf placement, the chat view's awaiting state, snooze gating and agent awareness.
Verification
Failing-first tests in the existing suites: Sidebar.logic.test.ts (status, pill Working cue), entities.test.ts (threadWorksPastQuestion, including thread waits), threadListV2.test.ts (mobile), backgroundThreadAnnouncement.test.ts, ThreadNotificationCoordinator.logic.test.ts. Each failed before its fix and passes now.
Branch updated with current main (clean merge).
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (7 packages) and tests for the changed files all pass.
Reviewed by GPT-6.1-Sol (high) through T3 Code, with adversarial passes. First fix: two rounds, the notification-key issue found and fixed. CodeRabbit follow-up: further rounds, including a scope check that everything here belongs to [Bug]: Pending async questions lose their thread-list indicator while the agent keeps working #24914 or to CodeRabbit's comments; the pill wording and the thread-wait case were found and fixed. Every round ended with no open findings.
Not done: no live run in a real client and no before/after captures yet. Web, desktop and mobile share the changed resolvers; the visual output is the existing Input status.
Model: Claude Opus 5.5. Harness: Claude Code. Orchestrator: T3 Code.
Since pingdotgg#15430 the shell hides nonblocking questions from hasPendingUserInput
while the run is working, and the thread list status resolvers only read
that flag, so a pending async question left no trace in the sidebar, status
pill, mobile list, attention notifications or background announcements.
List status now reads the pending runtime request directly via a shared
threadHasOpenQuestion helper. Shelf placement, chat view and snooze keep
the pingdotgg#15430 semantics.
closespingdotgg#24914
Async questions now raise Input while the run keeps going, so a run-scoped
attention key would hide a later secret in the same run and renotify the
same question whenever a follow-up run is queued.

Walkthrough
The change recognizes pending runtime user-input requests as open questions. Web and mobile thread lists can show Input while a thread continues working. Background announcements, notification attention, and snooze handling also use the open-question state.

Summary
Shared question status and mobile handling packages/client-runtime/src/state/models.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/entities.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/threadListV2.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/threadListV2.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/home/useThreadListActions.ts
Shared helpers detect open questions and identify when a thread works past a question. Mobile status resolution recognizes runtime requests, and snoozing is rejected when an open question exists. Tests cover the status and working-past-question conditions.
Web and mobile status indicators apps/web/src/components/Sidebar.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/Sidebar.logic.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/ThreadStatusIndicators.tsx, apps/web/src/components/sidebar/SidebarThreadRow.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/thread-list-v2-items.tsx
Web and mobile thread rows show Input for open questions. When work continues past the question, status indicators include Working and a duration; web status pills also expose working and pulse state.
Background announcements and notification attention apps/web/src/components/backgroundThreadAnnouncement.ts, apps/web/src/components/backgroundThreadAnnouncement.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/ThreadNotificationCoordinator.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/ThreadNotificationCoordinator.logic.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/ThreadNotificationCoordinator.tsx
Background request resolution uses the open-question helper and preserves the request ID. Notification attention uses the resolved request ID, falling back to the latest run ID, and the coordinator delegates attention calculation to the new helper.
pingdotgg/t3code#25155 — Both changes display pending non-blocking questions while the agent continues working.
pingdotgg/t3code#24894 — Both changes add Input indicators for pending non-blocking questions during work; this change also updates announcements, attention, and snooze handling.
pingdotgg/t3code#22291 — Both changes address the open-question state while a run continues, through client indicators here and server projection changes in that PR.

A running thread with an open async question now shows its working timer
next to Input on the web sidebar row and the mobile row, and the Awaiting
Input pill keeps its activity pulse, so an agent that keeps working does
not look stalled. Blocking questions are unchanged.
The Awaiting Input pill now says Working in its text, tooltip and accessible
label instead of relying on a pulse, and no Working cue shows while the
agent is blocked on a thread wait.
The collapsed project indicator now names Working like the thread pill does,
and a blocked question outranks one the agent keeps working past regardless
of thread order.
