fix(clients): background work Stop stays pending until the stopped tasks leave - #25002
After you click Stop on the background-work bar ("Running: Start Next.js dev server"), the button shows "Stopping..." only until the server accepts the interrupt, about 25 ms. It then turns back into an enabled "Stop" while the task is still running. For Claude, the task takes about 2 s to end, and the bar stays up the whole time. The label flickers, Stop looks like it failed, and each extra click sends another interrupt. Reported in https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24993 with a server trace: five interrupt commands in about 2 s from one stop attempt.
Expected: the button stays "Stopping..." and disabled until the tasks you stopped are gone.
Change
packages/client-runtime gets isBackgroundWorkStopPending. A Stop request records the task IDs that were pending when you clicked. It stays pending while the interrupt is in flight, and after acceptance while any of those tasks is still listed. New background work that starts later does not hold it.
Web and desktop (useThreadLifecycle.tsx) and mobile (ThreadDetailScreen.tsx) both had the same "clear on accept" pattern. Both now mark the request accepted instead of clearing it. A failed or interrupted request clears immediately, as before.
After acceptance, retry opens again after 10 s, so the original "allow retry" intent is kept. Without that limit, a task the provider never removes from the pending list (see https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/19287, https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/19061) would leave the button on "Stopping..." for good. 10 s matches the window ClaudeAdapterV2 waits before it force-closes a query that won't exit.
Surfaces: web and desktop share useThreadLifecycle, and mobile has its own copy of the pattern, so both are changed. The foreground turn Stop (ChatView, ThreadRouteScreen) is a different path and is unchanged. No contract, server, MCP, or docs changes.
Scope and approval
Fixes https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24993, which is not triaged yet. I'm submitting this under the "very small, focused fix for an obvious bug" exception. It changes one state transition: the pending state now clears when the stopped tasks leave, within a time limit, instead of on acceptance. That logic is one shared helper, applied at the only two places the pattern exists. No product behavior or defaults change.
Verification
vp test run packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadExecution.test.ts: 14/14 pass. The three new cases cover: pending while the stopped task is still listed (before and after acceptance); not pending once those tasks leave, even if a different task starts; scoped to the thread that sent the Stop. The helper is new, so these tests can't fail on main. They pin the new rule, not a regression of old code.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip (2/2), typecheck (7 packages) and tests pass. Also ran vp run --filter @t3tools/mobile typecheck and --filter @t3tools/web typecheck separately: both exit 0.
Before: the trace and screenshot in https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24993, from desktop 0.1.3-nightly.20261024.3630 on macOS 15.1 with Claude (claude-opus-5-5). The reporter is adding a screen recording there.
Not checked:
No after capture of the fixed bar, and no browser test of the hook. Reproducing it needs a live provider running a background command in the dev app.
Mobile was not run on a device. It was only type-checked.

merged current main and preserved both test additions. background stop requests now persist per thread on web and above the keyed mobile body. the existing browser test covers navigation and success/failure isolation.
blacksmith vp run check:changed 6d46336476941257d774be7c7733e9caf201fec2 passed format, lint, knip, seven affected package typechecks, 28 focused tests, and react compiler checks. two independent source reviews approved this head.
real linux web client with codex luna: started sleep 180 through the composer, left it running after the turn, then clicked stop. observed enabled stop -> disabled stopping -> task removed, with no enabled stop after acceptance. the navigation regression uses the actual hook action in chromium. native mobile/electron, other providers, and remote/tunnel behavior remain unverified.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, self-contained fix to keep the existing background-work Stop action disabled until the originally stopped tasks actually leave, with a bounded retry timeout and focused tests. It does not add a capability, change product defaults, or modify sensitive or deployment-related code.

Web and mobile now track background-work stop requests by thread and task IDs. Accepted requests remain pending while captured tasks are listed, subject to a ten-second retry deadline. Failed requests clear, and tests cover pending-state evaluation and web behavior across threads.

Layer / File(s)
Summary
Stop request contract and pending evaluation packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadExecution.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadExecution.test.ts
Adds BackgroundWorkStopRequest, a ten-second retry interval, and isBackgroundWorkStopPending. Tests cover task removal, retry timing, thread matching, and missing requests.
Web stop lifecycle apps/web/src/components/chat/useThreadLifecycle.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/useThreadLifecycle.browser.test.tsx
The web lifecycle tracks requests by thread and task IDs. Accepted requests remain pending while captured tasks remain listed, unless the retry deadline passes. Failures clear the matching request. Browser tests cover success and failure across two threads.
Mobile stop lifecycle apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadDetailScreen.tsx
The mobile screen tracks requests by thread and task IDs. Successful stops set a retry deadline; failures and other actions clear the request.
pingdotgg/t3code#24993: The change keeps Stop pending while captured background tasks remain listed, addressing the reported re-enabled control after interrupt acceptance.

Explanation
Issue [#24993] requires the background-work Stop control to remain disabled and show “Stopping...” after acceptance until the stopped tasks leave, while allowing recovery after failure. The PR records the thread and task IDs at Stop time. isBackgroundWorkStopPending keeps the state pending during the request and after acceptance while a recorded task remains. Web/desktop and mobile use this logic. A 10-second retry deadline preserves recovery for stuck tasks. Unit tests cover acceptance, task removal, retry expiry, and thread scoping. Browser tests cover per-thread success and failure isolation.

merged main and preserved your commit. replaced the two timer effects with the existing deadline subscriptions, kept the ten-second retry window after acceptance, and guarded repeated web stop actions. the deadline boolean also avoids a compiler-sensitive mobile clock read. only the original four files differ from main.

blacksmith-check: vp run check:changed passed formatting, lint, both knip passes, seven package typechecks, and all 15 thread-execution tests. all 9 existing clock tests passed separately. the retry regression failed before the corresponding fix.
real web client, system chrome, actual codex delegated sleep 120: main briefly re-enabled stop while the task remained; final source retained disabled Stopping... until the task disappeared. recordings contain the click and removal, with loading frames trimmed.
all seven reported head checks are green; git.cafe reports mergeable. two independent full-diff follow-up reviews found no remaining findings on this head.
unverified: claude is signed out; native mobile/electron and remote/tunnel execution were not exercised. the full ci test/build suites did not report on this fork head; scoped remote checks passed. coderabbit's status is green, but its new review was rate-limited. no review bot was requested.
git.cafe renders these external media embeds as links. the uploaded images and both videos were reopened and playback and seeking were checked in chrome.

Created ../main at github/main (0deb383709), installed dependencies with vp i, and started the real dev server in the background with its own .t3 state. Actual ports were web 8693 and server 16733. Playwright 1.60.0 launched /usr/bin/google-chrome at 1440x1000 and opened the pairing URL; browser-session authentication returned HTTP 200.
Browser automation then stalled. The server logged repeated event-loop stalls, including event loop stalled for 848330 ms at 08:31:51 UTC. This exceeds the ten-minute stall limit and exhausted nearly the two-hour budget. The cause is undetermined; this is not evidence of a PR regression. Stopped the captured dev-server and browser process groups and confirmed their listening ports disappeared. Then checked out the exact PR head and ran vp i. No source changes or pushes.
The original bug was not reproduced on main. No project, thread or Codex gpt-6.1-sol turn was successfully created through the app. The PR dev server was not started after the stall. Background Stop pending state, task removal, retry deadline and neighboring foreground Stop remain unverified. No usable screenshot or interaction recording was captured, so no visual evidence is claimed.
Native mobile, Electron, other providers and remote/tunnel paths were not exercised. No new tests or checks were run. GitCafe reports seven successful existing head check contexts, zero failing and zero pending; these do not prove runtime behavior. The prior verification comment is historical evidence and was not reproduced in this attempt.

installed and ran github/main (8d012a688e) in a separate worktree first, then stopped it and ran the exact pr head. verification used isolated dev state, playwright from the repo, and /usr/bin/google-chrome.
added /home/user/stop-verification, a real git repository, through the web ui. selected codex gpt-6.1-sol and sent real provider turns through the composer. no mocks, fixtures, replay provider, or injected application state.
sent the same background-command prompt on both revisions: bash -c 'trap "echo shutting-down; sleep 6; exit 0" INT TERM; echo background-ready; while true; do sleep 1; done', with yield_time_ms=1000, then a final answer leaving the command running. codex terminates this command promptly; the six-second signal trap did not delay codex termination.
on main, clicking background Stop showed disabled Stopping..., then re-enabled Stop while the task was still listed. a dom mutation observer recorded 83 ms in stopping state, followed by 225 ms with an enabled stop before the bar disappeared.
on the pr, the same interaction went directly from enabled Stop to disabled Stopping... to no background bar. it stayed disabled for the entire observed 180 ms pending interval. the provider log confirms a real thread/backgroundTerminals/terminate request and the command completing. these are observations of this interaction, not a performance comparison.
neighboring behavior: foreground Stop generation interrupted a real sleep 120 turn and showed Stopped by user. subsequent turns worked. fresh background sleep 20 and sleep 25 commands finished naturally with exit 0; the fresh task's stop control was enabled, so the previous stop state did not stick to new work.
vp test run packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadExecution.test.ts passed all 22 tests on blacksmith. vp run check:changed 476590d0adede15a4eec0d05b8adac8c63736452 also passed there: format, lint, both knip checks, seven affected package typechecks, focused tests, and react compiler checks. the explicit ref is this pr's base; the remote worker needed its shallow history fetched before it could compare revisions. the pr already has 29 successful ci checks.

a real provider retaining tasks for the full 10-second retry window, interrupt-request failure, simultaneous new tasks during pending stop, and stopping across thread navigation were not reproduced. the retry and task-id/thread scoping rules passed their existing shared-state tests. the existing review findings about thread navigation remain outside this runtime result.
the pr head needed a page reload after its first turn to display the assistant reply and background bar. main did not. main includes the separate first-reply fix 8d012a688e (https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/27522); this verification does not fix that unrelated head/base difference.
Assert retry availability after the accepted-stop deadline.
The success branch only verifies the disabled state. It does not verify that Stop becomes enabled after 10 seconds while the captured task remains listed. Install fakeTimers after rendering, then advance the clock past the deadline and assert that Stop is enabled.
