Problem

Portrait floating previews stop at 240 pixels wide. Starting a drag after resizing changes placement policy, reopening details and moving the preview away from the pointer.

Change

Use the existing 150-pixel minimum height and source aspect ratio for sizing. Derive placement from explicit size and position so dragging preserves the chosen frame and folds details; compact chat stays an overlay and wide chat still reflows. Production changes stay in two layout files; the store and gesture controller remain intact.

Verification

  • Blacksmith vp run check:changed passed: format, lint, both knip passes, affected typechecks, and 51 focused tests. Regression tests reproduced the failures before the fix, using existing test files only.
  • Real web client, Playwright mouse input, system Google Chrome, isolated vp run dev, live server browser stream of example.com at 390×844. Matched full-window captures at 1840×1000 compare main e3592efe7f with f257124ec5.
  • A 140-pixel resize request now produces 140×303 instead of 240×519. After resizing to 340×736, a 12-pixel left drag now moves 12 pixels instead of jumping 292 pixels left. Details remain folded.
  • Moving away restores full details. Resizing at 1000×900 leaves the composer fixed; the compact layout was also inspected in dark theme.
  • Merged github/main (44df336016, containing green 1a13127c) with a merge commit. Blacksmith vp run check:changed passed again on 1d2dc5ca7e; CI is running on that head.
  • Two independent GPT-6.1-Sol reviews found no blockers on 1d2dc5ca7e. The scoped diff is unchanged after the main merge.
  • Macroscope requests human approval for the default UI behavior change. CodeRabbit was rate-limited and did not review; it was not retriggered.
  • Unverified: Electron compositing, physical device streams, native mobile, and relay/tunnel paths. Known limit: the existing browser control footer can overflow very narrow thumbnails; its layout is outside this focused fix.

Before: the portrait preview remains 240 pixels wide.

before: portrait preview remains 240 pixels wide

After: the same preview shrinks to 140 pixels wide.

after: portrait preview shrinks to 140 pixels wide

before: resize then drag jumps left and reopens details

after: resize then drag follows the pointer and keeps details folded

Takeover

Replaces https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/24950, with thanks to @PixPMusic for the original implementation.

Built with GPT-6.1-Sol in the Codex harness on T3 Code.

current merge verification

at 8c78ed977f5e92001d754a7dba4a0635bc8cce6a, merged github/main without rebasing. the conflict keeps dragged preview placement and main's smooth chat centering. the diff remains five files, +216/-34. two independent read-only reviews found no blockers.

blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, both knip passes, affected typechecks, all 54 focused tests, and react compiler coverage. playwright with /usr/bin/google-chrome exercised the live server-browser stream in the web client: portrait resize to 140×303, resize to 340×736, then a 12px left drag changed x1488 to x1476 without changing y or size. docking and close passed with keyboard activation. uploaded recording played to completion and seeking passed.

current head: a resized portrait browser follows a 12-pixel drag

native devices, electron compositing, remote/relay/tunnel modes, other providers, and mouse activation of hover-only docking/close controls remain unverified in this pass. existing before/after evidence above is retained. macroscope requests maria's human review.

Walkthrough

Preview frames can now use narrower widths while retaining a minimum height. Canvas layout uses preview size and position to determine chat reflow, preview placement, and details-card overlap.

Changes: Preview layout

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preview frame minimum sizing
apps/web/src/components/preview/previewMiniPlayerLayout.ts, apps/web/src/components/preview/previewMiniPlayerLayout.test.ts
The minimum preview width is now based on the width needed to retain the minimum height at the source aspect ratio. Tests cover default sizing and resizing for portrait and landscape sources.
Canvas layout and preview interactions
apps/web/src/components/chat/chatCanvasLayout.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/chatCanvasLayout.test.ts, apps/web/src/previewMiniPlayerStore.test.ts
Chat reflow depends on available width and explicit preview sizing. Preview position determines layout obstacles. Tests cover chat overlap, details-card behavior, preview placement, and movement.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This fix changes production floating-preview sizing and placement, including the default size of portrait previews and how chat/details panels reflow around them. The behavior is localized and tested, but the default UI behavior change warrants human review.

Merged main (becf853defb6) into this head without rebasing. Resolved the adjacent test conflict by retaining main's chat-centering cases and this PR's find-bar cases. The scoped diff remains five files, 216 insertions and 34 deletions.

Blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, both knip passes, affected typechecks and all 54 focused tests. Two independent scoped reviews approved 345f1ff63036 with no findings.

Scope and approval: this is Maria's requested takeover of https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/24950. The floating-preview sizing and placement fix remains unchanged. Macroscope's requested human review remains Maria's decision. Existing before/after evidence stays in the PR body. Post-merge browser interaction is unverified: the client opened, but its browser surface remained connecting during this attempt.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified as-is at 345f1ff63036168d7c3159e8f24e94789ec3a0d9 on a disposable linux boat vm. no source changes or pushes were needed.

  • reproduced both bugs on github/main at c677d5fc45e6d585e52bca03244a0870c588a555 in a separate worktree, then stopped its captured dev process before starting this exact pr head. ran vp i in both checkouts and vp run dev in the background with isolated, unseeded state.
  • used the repo's playwright with /usr/bin/google-chrome. created the project and thread through the web app against a real git repository. real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns completed on both branches. a follow-up turn on the pr called preview_status and reported the actual browser tab, https://example.com/, at 390×844.
  • opened that live server-browser stream through the browser panel, entered portrait dimensions, floated it over chat, and used actual mouse resize/drag gestures. matched full-window captures use the same project, prompt, response, page, viewport, and 1840×1000 client size.
main: request 140px width -> 240×519
pr:   request 140px width -> 140×303
main: resize to 340×736, drag left 12px -> x 1488 -> 1196 (-292)
pr:   resize to 340×736, drag left 12px -> x 1488 -> 1476 (-12)
pr: details density stays compact across drag; moving away restores full
pr:   at 1000×900, resize 340 -> 260; composer stays {x:317,y:779,w:622,h:48}

neighboring behavior: wide chat reflow remained usable; compact chat stayed an overlay without moving the composer. docking back into the panel retained the url, and closing removed the floating player, exercised with keyboard activation. also inspected the compact client in dark mode.

blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, both knip passes, affected typechecks, and all 54 focused tests. the worker needed its shallow history deepened and origin/main set to the recorded pr base, becf853defb6, before that check could run. cafe reports all 30 head checks successful.

before: main remains 240 pixels wide.

main: portrait preview cannot shrink below 240 pixels

same request on the pr produces 140 pixels.

pr: portrait preview shrinks to 140 pixels

main recording: resize then a 12-pixel drag jumps 292 pixels and unfolds details

pr recording: resize then a 12-pixel drag follows the pointer and keeps details compact

inspected the captures and recordings. uploaded mp4 versions also played through and sought successfully in t3's browser player.

Not verified

native ios/android device streams, electron compositing, macos/windows, and relay/tunnel/multi-environment connections were not exercised on this linux vm. other provider adapters were not exercised; this change is client layout logic.

mouse activation of the hover-only docking/close pill is unverified: this headless chrome reports hover: none and pointer: none, so mouse clicks on its hidden controls timed out. keyboard activation passed; mouse resizing and dragging passed.

the existing browser control footer still overflows the 140-pixel thumbnail, as already documented in the pr. this verification does not claim that footer layout is fixed. no provider turn or app stall exceeded ten minutes.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Keep the composer clear after find-bar clamping.

Find-bar clamping can move a tall preview into the composer after the lift calculation. For a 1584×988 canvas, a 672×940 preview at (900, 12) moves to x=608 to clear a find bar spanning 1292..1572 with bottom 48. With a 180-pixel composer, the preview then covers the composer’s rightmost 80 pixels. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Check composer overlap after the final frame placement, and fit the preview if needed.
