fix(shared): T3 Connect no longer runs cloudflared releases that trust the compromised eMudhra intermediates - #26040
T3 Connect can still run a cloudflared release that trusts the compromised eMudhra (emSign) intermediates. #25572 moved the managed pin to 2026.10.4, but CLOUDFLARED_MIN_VERSION is still 2025.6.1, and the resolver applies that floor to every binary it can pick:
With no managed copy, an affected PATH binary is used. One example is Homebrew cloudflared 2026.9.3, as reported in this #25567 comment.
T3CODE_CLOUDFLARED_PATH can point at an affected release.
An older managed copy such as 2026.10.0 stays eligible as a fallback while the pin is not installed.
Raise CLOUDFLARED_MIN_VERSION to 2026.10.3. Every selection path already uses this floor, so no resolver logic changes:
An affected PATH binary is skipped, so the runtime installs the managed pin. This is the existing behavior for incompatible PATH binaries.
An affected T3CODE_CLOUDFLARED_PATH is reported as unavailable with the existing "must point to cloudflared 2026.10.3 or newer" warning. T3 does not switch to another binary without asking.
An affected older managed copy is no longer used as a fallback.
Why 2026.10.3 and not 2026.10.2: the fix comes from Go's crypto/x509 distrust of these intermediates (CVE-2026-111943, golang/go#82345), first shipped in cloudflared through Go 1.27.3. The 2026.10.2 macOS .tgz assets were still built with Go 1.27.1, while its Linux assets use Go 1.27.3. I read the embedded Go version from each release asset:
The version string cannot tell a fixed 2026.10.2 build from an affected one, so the floor is the first release where every asset is fixed.
The comment on the constant and the version-floor paragraph in docs/internals/t3-connect.md now say the floor also covers security fixes, and that a host without an eligible binary stays off the relay until it has one, since no older binary runs as a fallback.
Scope and approval
This is a small, focused fix for an obvious bug. It finishes the eMudhra fix from #25572 (merged, issue #25567) for the binaries the managed pin does not cover. The diff is one constant, its comment, one internal doc paragraph, and version strings in existing tests. #25608 tracks this gap. It has no maintainer confirmation yet. The behavior when only affected binaries are present is the one tradeoff: Connect stays unavailable until a fixed binary is installed, the same as for any binary under the floor today.
Verification
Existing tests in packages/shared/src/relayClient.test.ts, with no new test cases:
The PATH test now uses a 2026.10.2 binary and also places an affected managed copy (a 2026.10.0 folder). It expects the fixed PATH binary.
The override test uses 2026.10.2.
The precedence and self-update tests use 2026.10.3 where they used versions now below the floor. Folder names are unchanged.
On main's source, the PATH and override tests fail because the affected binary is selected. With the change:
vp test run packages/shared/src/relayClient.test.ts apps/server/src/cloud/ManagedEndpointRuntime.test.ts apps/server/src/cli/connect.test.ts
Test Files 3 passed (3)
Tests 31 passed (31)
vp fmt --check / vp lint on the changed files: clean

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes the default cloudflared acceptance threshold and alters runtime fallback behavior to block releases trusting compromised eMudhra intermediates. Because it changes a product default and the production security boundary, the change warrants human review.

Explanation
Issue #25608 requires T3 Connect to avoid affected cloudflared releases on PATH, through T3CODE_CLOUDFLARED_PATH, and in managed fallbacks. packages/shared/src/relayClient.ts raises the shared CLOUDFLARED_MIN_VERSION from 2025.6.1 to 2026.10.3, so the existing compatibility check covers all selection paths. Existing tests now cover a 2026.10.2 PATH binary with a below-floor managed copy, a 2026.10.2 override, and eligible managed and PATH candidates. The documentation records that below-floor binaries cannot run as fallbacks. The 2026.10.3 floor satisfies the issue's proposed minimum of 2026.10.2 or later.

@coderabbitai Valid. The handoff paragraph promised that an older managed release keeps serving while the pin installs, which no longer holds for releases under the floor. Fixed in dc43f9b: the version-floor paragraph in docs/internals/t3-connect.md now says no older binary runs, even as a fallback, and a host without an eligible binary stays off the relay until it has one.

Learning: In apps/server/src/cloud/ManagedEndpointRuntime.ts, the managed relay-client handoff intentionally stops the older connector when the replacement registers or its scope closes. A replacement crash before registration uses the existing supervisor's restart backoff and recovery. Retaining the older connector through that crash requires separate fallback state outside activeRef and a pinned-client retry policy; it is not part of the normal-update handoff requirement.
The pinned test only probes 2026.10.3, the minimum version. It would pass if the pinned branch returned a below-floor binary. Add a below-floor pinned fixture and assert fallback to an eligible PATH binary.

@coderabbitai On the nitpick about a below-floor pinned binary: skipping to keep the diff minimal. The pinned path, older managed copies, PATH, and the override all go through the same compatibleCandidate floor check in relayClient.ts, and the PATH test already places a below-floor managed copy (2026.10.0) and expects the eligible PATH binary. A separate pinned fixture would exercise the same comparison.
@Project516 Agreed. I verified that all four selection paths use the same compatibleCandidate floor check. The existing PATH test rejects the managed 2026.10.0 copy and selects the eligible PATH binary.
A separate below-floor pinned fixture is not needed for this change. I withdraw the nitpick.

thanks @Project516. the shared minimum is the right fix because it already guards path, overrides, and managed fallbacks. i kept your implementation and commit, merged current main (36dac68), and made the accepted test binary explicitly report 2026.10.3 so lowering the floor cannot silently weaken coverage. no resolver logic or extra test files were needed. the diff remains three files, +20/-15.
