Problem

With Settings → Labs → Boring sidebar on, the New thread (pen) button in the sidebar header and the chat.new shortcut start a thread in the current project instead of opening the "New thread in…" picker. #21039 did that on purpose, because every project had a folder with its own pen button. Since #26387 a project without active threads has no folder unless the project filter picks it, so neither the header pen nor chat.new can start a thread in it. Reproduction steps and screenshots are in #26416.

Closes #26416

Change

 • handleNewThreadClick in Sidebar.tsx no longer bypasses shouldCreateNewThreadInCurrentProject in boring mode. The pen opens the picker when there is more than one project, as in the default sidebar. Shift-click and chat.newLocal still start in the current project.

 • The pen's tooltip shows the "New thread in current project: Shift+click" hint in boring mode too, since Shift-click now does something different from a plain click there.

 • chat.new in chatRouteCommands.ts drops the same boringSidebarEnabled / legacySidebarEnabled check. legacySidebarEnabled users get the boring sidebar (useBoringSidebarEnabled), so the check is removed for both settings.

 • chat.new counts project groups with groupScratchProjects: true, as useSidebarProjectGroups does for the header pen. Without it, a user with no real project and scratch projects on two environments got a new thread from the pen but the picker from chat.new.

Folder pens and the folder context menu are unchanged: they still start a thread in their own project.

Scope and approval

Fixes the bug reported in #26416, which has not been triaged yet. It qualifies as a very small, focused fix of an obvious bug: the boring-mode override was there because every project had a folder with its own pen (#21039), and #26387 removed that premise, so idle projects lost their only one-click way to start a thread. The change only removes that override, so the header pen and chat.new behave as they do in the default sidebar. It adds no setting and leaves folder pens alone.

Verification

Manual checks in a web dev build (dev-runner dev) of this branch, with an empty data directory and four test projects. Only server has a thread, so the boring sidebar shows only its folder:

 • Boring sidebar on, a thread in server open, click the header pen: "New thread in…" opens and lists all four projects. On main (2a73827) the same click opens a draft in server.
 • Same state, press chat.new (Ctrl+Shift+O): the picker opens with all four projects. On main it opened a draft in server.
 • Shift-click on the header pen: a draft opens in server, as before.
 • Hover over the header pen: the tooltip shows the Shift+click hint.

Before: in the boring sidebar the header pen opens a draft in server, the only project with a folder

Before: header pen opens a draft in the current project

After: the same pen in the boring sidebar opens "New thread in…" with every project

After: header pen opens the New thread in picker

After: the pen's tooltip shows the Shift+click hint in boring mode too

After: tooltip with the Shift+click hint

vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (2 packages) and the tests beside the changed files (5 files, 114 tests) pass, also after the scratch-grouping commit.

No test was added. The change removes a mode override at two call sites, and testing them would mean mocking the projects, the client settings and the command palette around the same two lines. The behavior is shown by the screenshots.

Not checked: the desktop app (it wraps the same web code) and mobile, whose New thread does not depend on this setting.

Model and harness: Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Code in T3 Code

Since pingdotgg#26387 the boring sidebar hides projects without active threads,
so the header pen and chat.new were the only quick way to start a thread
in one, yet both still skipped the picker in boring mode.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — New thread now opens the project picker for multi-project boring-sidebar users, and the keyboard change also affects legacy-sidebar users. Human review is required to confirm this change to the default interaction.

Walkthrough

The sidebar’s new-thread action and the chat.new shortcut now open project selection when multiple project groups exist. The project-specific hint also appears in boring-sidebar mode when multiple groups exist.

Changes: New-thread project selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
New-thread entry points

The sidebar action no longer creates a thread in the current project solely because boring-sidebar mode is enabled. The chat.new shortcut opens the “new-thread-in” command palette when multiple project groups exist. Project group counts include scratch projects, and the project-specific hint appears whenever multiple groups exist.

The header pen and shortcut offer the project picker when multiple project groups exist, while the local-thread action remains available. This change is mergeable after normal checks.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#26416] Requirement: with the boring sidebar on and several projects, the header New thread (pen) and chat.new must open the "New thread in…" picker. Shift-click and chat.newLocal must keep starting in the current project.

Evidence from the whole-PR diff (merge base 2a73827 to head 373ae35):

 • Sidebar.tsx handleNewThreadClick: the boringSidebarEnabled || bypass is removed. The pen now calls startNewThreadFromContext only when shouldCreateNewThreadInCurrentProject(shiftKey, projectGroups.length) is true. With more than one project group, a plain click reaches the picker path. Shift-click still starts in the current project.
 • Sidebar.tsx tooltip: showNewThreadInProjectHint drops !boringSidebarEnabled, so the Shift+click hint shows in boring mode when there is more than one group.
 • chatRouteCommands.ts chat.new: the boringSidebarEnabled/legacySidebarEnabled gate is removed. The command opens new-thread-in when readProjectGroupCount() > 1. chat.newLocal is unchanged.
 • readProjectGroupCount now passes groupScratchProjects: true, so the shortcut counts groups the same way as the header pen. The commit message says useSidebarProjectGroups does this. I did not re-read that hook within the inspection budget. This does not change the result, because the header pen path already uses projectGroups in Sidebar.tsx.

Folder pens and the folder context menu are not touched, so existing per-project behavior is preserved. The reported vp run check:changed results and the screenshot-based manual checks support the behavior. No automated test was added, which the PR states explicitly. Coding requirements in #26416 are satisfied by the code change. No non-coding requirement applies to this assessment.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff touches two files and only the code paths named in #26416:

 • Sidebar.tsx: the handleNewThreadClick boring-mode bypass and the showNewThreadInProjectHint condition. Both directly control the header pen behavior the issue reports.
 • chatRouteCommands.ts: the chat.new gate, which the issue names. The added groupScratchProjects: true in readProjectGroupCount changes only how the chat.new count is computed. It makes the shortcut use the same project-group count as the header pen, so both entry points choose the picker under the same conditions. This is a direct part of the chat.new behavior the issue describes, not unrelated work.

No change touches folder pens, the folder context menu, project filtering, settings, or other unrelated behavior. The PR adds no setting. No out-of-scope change was demonstrated.

The sidebar folds every scratch project into one group, so with no real
project and scratch projects on two environments the header pen started
a thread while chat.new opened the picker.
