Problem

The floating Changes button shows line totals but lacks the breakdown tooltip available in the Pull Requests panel.

Change

Reuse the same breakdown grid for the full Changes row, on hover or keyboard focus. Count local branch and uncommitted changes from the existing Git status read, so the breakdown matches the button without another Git command or hosting API request. Reuse the PR file classifier and remeasure the tooltip when counts change.

This applies to the shared web/desktop UI. Mobile has no equivalent floating hover control. The added status field is optional for compatibility with older servers.

Scope and approval

Focused consistency fix for an existing tooltip, requested by the maintainer in this task.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed passed: format, lint, knip, generated GraphQL, affected-package typechecks, and 191 tests across four files.
  • Extended the Git status integration case to cover committed and untracked files in all five categories; confirmed it failed before the fix.
  • Browser panel: checked hover, keyboard focus, opening Changes, and live count changes from +9 to +109 without wrapping the card.

Both screenshots use the same isolated repository and totals.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds shared file-category totals to branch-change status and displays category breakdowns in the web Changes control. The control uses branch breakdown data when available and otherwise summarizes working-tree files.

Changes: Changed-file breakdown

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared categorization and status shape
packages/shared/src/changedFileKind.ts, packages/contracts/src/git.ts
A shared helper totals additions and deletions across five file categories. The local VCS status shape gains an optional branchChanges.breakdown field.
Server branch-change breakdown
apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.ts, apps/server/src/pullRequest/pullRequestChangeBreakdown.ts, apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts
Branch-change totals include a breakdown from parsed numstat files. Pull request breakdown generation uses the shared helper. Tests check category totals and expected branch-change fields.
Changes control breakdown tooltip
apps/web/src/components/GitActionsControl.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestChangeBreakdownStat.tsx
The Changes control uses branch breakdown data or summarizes working-tree files when that data is unavailable. It displays the category grid in a tooltip when totals are nonzero. The grid is now exported.

thanks @jakeleventhal. the shared grid and categories from the existing status read keep this focused. i preserved your commit and merged current main into this branch. the conflict resolution keeps main's showChanges setting guard around the tooltip; nothing from the original fix was dropped.

verification at 37e6fe032d5ecb60db5bc80887d6c050e984592f:

  • the existing category regression fails on main with a missing breakdown, then passes here.
  • blacksmith vp run check:changed aa11ef6783da81039e6646e2e96941748afb358e passed formatting, lint, knip, generated graphql, affected typechecks, 195 tests, and 2 react compiler assertions.
  • real web app in system chrome: hover, keyboard focus, light/dark appearance, and opening the diff panel. all five categories sum to the same +7/-0 in the button and panel. a real file edit plus the client's status refresh updates the open tooltip to +107/-0 and back without overflow.
  • two independent read-only reviews approved this exact head without findings.
  • unverified: electron shell, remote/relay/tunnel connections, and an older-server runtime. mobile has no equivalent floating hover control. all 31 checks are now green and the branch is conflict-free.

known limit: the bot suggested a nonzero deletion assertion for breakdown.docs in an existing case. deletion totals are already asserted there; category deletion coverage remains a nonblocking test nit. no runtime defect was identified.

same repository data before (main) and after:

before: changes +7/-0 has no hover breakdown

after: five categories and total +7/-0

hover, keyboard focus, and opening the changes panel

2145-2145: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Assert a nonzero category deletion.

This case already produces one deletion across two .txt files. Assert that breakdown.docs contains two additions and one deletion. The new breakdown assertion only checks zero deletions, so it would not catch dropped deletion counts. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

As per coding guidelines, “Backend behavior changes ship with focused tests for that behavior.” As per path instructions, extend an existing case when it can catch a real regression.

Update the existing test around status.branchChanges to assert that
breakdown.docs contains two additions and one deletion, so the existing two-file
case verifies its nonzero deletion count.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified the unchanged head 37e6fe032d5ecb60db5bc80887d6c050e984592f on this disposable linux boat vm. no source changes or pushes were needed.

  • reproduced on freshly fetched github/main (616c426f5f) in /home/user/main: hovering the floating changes row at +18/-1 showed no breakdown. clicking it opened changes.
  • installed dependencies with vp i in both checkouts. ran one background dev server at a time, stopping main by its captured process group before starting the exact pr head. both used the same task-owned isolated state, never the live t3 database.
  • drove the real web client with the repo's playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome. added a real git repository through the app and selected codex gpt-6.1-sol through the model picker. three real provider turns built and improved a line-counter cli. no replay, mocks, fixtures, seeded data, or direct database writes.
  • on the pr, hover and keyboard tab focus showed code +15/-0, docs +3/-1, total +18/-1 for the same repository contents as the before capture. empty categories were omitted. enter and clicking still opened the diff; expanding README showed the actual replacement and additions.
  • subsequent provider work committed the code while leaving the README uncommitted. the existing client status path updated the row and breakdown to code +17/-0, docs +4/-1, total +21/-1. the diff agreed. light and dark appearance both rendered correctly.
  • blacksmith-check ran vp i, then vp run check:changed aa11ef6783da81039e6646e2e96941748afb358e: format, lint, both knip passes, graphql, 32 affected-package typechecks, 195 tests, and 2 react compiler assertions passed. the first attempt lacked merge history in the remote snapshot; fetching the pr history in that worker resolved it. existing pr checks: 31 successful, zero pending or failing.

short runtime cross-check of the provider-created repository:

$ git diff main --numstat
4 1 README.md
17 0 count.mjs
$ git status --short
 M README.md
$ git log -2 --oneline
1d4ec57 feat: add line counter help
aa1b30b docs: add line counter baseline
web row and hover: +21/-1

before and after use matching repository files at +18/-1. the recording shows hover, keyboard focus, enter opening changes, the expanded README diff, and returning to the hover at +21/-1. inspected the captures and checked uploaded image rendering plus video playback and seeking in chrome.

before on main: changes +18/-1 has no hover breakdown

after on pr: code and docs breakdown totals +18/-1

hover, keyboard focus, and opening the real changes diff

Not verified

native electron shell, macos/windows, native ios/android, remote relay/tunnel connections, and mixed-version older servers were not exercised on this linux web setup. mobile has no equivalent floating hover control. real app data exercised code and docs with nonzero additions/deletions; the other three category buckets were covered by the existing passing checks, not by fabricated app files. the separate pull-request-panel breakdown was not exercised against a hosting service.
