feat(server): add a cleanup option that only deletes worktrees whose work landed - #27001
Worktree cleanup rules are independent. Delete settled worktrees, Delete inactive worktrees and Delete worktrees with deleted threads never check whether the branch reached the default branch. A worktree with no local changes but commits that were never pushed is removed as soon as one of those rules fires. The branch ref stays, but the checkout is gone, and a user who wants "remove it once it is settled and merged" cannot express that today.
Seen on nightly 3853: settle a thread whose worktree has one local commit that is on no remote branch, set Delete settled worktrees to 0 days, and the next sweep removes it ("Settled for 0 days").
The same gap is why people leave Delete worktrees with deleted threads off: a deleted thread's worktree then stays forever.
Change
A new switch under Settings → Worktrees → Cleanup → Advanced: Only delete landed worktrees (storageCleanup.worktreeRequireIntegrated, also available in per-project custom rules). Default off, so existing behavior does not change.
With it on, every rule also needs the worktree's HEAD to be in the remote default branch, or its pull request to be merged at that exact commit. That is the same check Delete merged worktrees and Delete unchanged worktrees already use (merge-base --is-ancestor, or storageCleanupPullRequestMerged). A worktree that fails it is kept with "Has commits that are not on the default branch". The default-branch lookup moved into worktreeIntegration.ts unchanged so both paths share it.
The settings row only shows when every selected environment reports the new worktreeRequireIntegrated capability, so older servers are never sent a key they drop.
Scope and approval
This is a focused option on the existing worktree cleanup capability (CONTRIBUTING exception 2): it narrows what the existing rules may delete and adds no new trigger or workflow. The stock default is unchanged. No maintainer has approved it yet.
Verification
Focused tests in apps/server/src/storageCleanup.test.ts, "worktree cleanup that requires landed work": one case per trigger (settled after 0 days, inactive after 8 days, deleted thread). Each uses a real repo with a bare origin, gives the worktree one commit that is not on origin's default branch, turns the option on, and checks that cleanup keeps it with "Has commits that are not on the default branch". It then pushes the commit to origin main and checks that the next run removes it with the trigger's own reason ("Settled for 0 days", "Inactive for 30 days", "Thread was deleted").
vp test run src/storageCleanup.test.ts: the 3 new cases pass. With the option's check disabled in storageCleanup.ts, all 3 fail, so they cover this change.
Sandbox server from this branch, empty database, a local repo with a bare origin. Thread in a worktree, one local commit not on any remote, thread settled.
Option off, settled after 0 days: the worktree was removed (the bug).
Option on, settled after 0 days: kept, reason "Has commits that are not on the default branch".
Pushed the commit to origin main, next sweep: removed, "Settled for 0 days".
Screenshots, Settings → Worktrees → Cleanup → Advanced, dev server with an empty database at 1440px. The new Only delete landed worktrees row sits under Delete unchanged worktrees.
Before (this PR's base on main)
After (this branch)
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, graphql and typecheck pass. Tests: 260 pass and 2 fail, both on macOS only and both also failing with this PR's base sources. In storageCleanup.test.ts, "compares the checked-out branch without a full status" fails on a gitfile check under the macOS temp dir. In ServerEnvironment.test.ts, "publishes proven install ownership only for manually updated servers" fails because the path comes back as /var on one side and /private/var on the other.
Not checked: mobile (it has no storage settings), Windows paths.
…work landed
Settled, inactive and deleted-thread cleanup never checked whether a
worktree's commits reached the default branch, so a clean worktree with
unpushed commits could be removed. Only delete landed worktrees
(storageCleanup.worktreeRequireIntegrated, default off) makes every rule
also require HEAD to be in the remote default branch or a merged pull
request at that commit.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Adds an optional safeguard that keeps worktrees until their current commit has landed. Existing cleanup defaults and deletion safeguards remain unchanged, and the option only narrows what cleanup may remove.

Worktree cleanup settings now include an option to require integration with the default branch or a merged pull request. The server checks integration during cleanup, and the settings interface displays the option when connected environments support it.
Changes: Worktree cleanup integration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Define and propagate the cleanup setting packages/contracts/src/environment.ts, packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, packages/contracts/src/settings.test.ts, packages/shared/src/projectSettings.ts, packages/shared/src/projectSettings.test.ts, packages/shared/src/serverSettings.ts, packages/shared/src/serverSettings.test.ts, apps/server/src/environment/ServerEnvironment.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/scopedSettings.test.ts
Adds worktreeRequireIntegrated, defaulting to false, to cleanup settings and patches. Resolved rules carry the setting. The server environment advertises the capability.
Check integration during cleanup apps/server/src/worktreeIntegration.ts, apps/server/src/storageCleanup.ts, apps/server/src/storageCleanup.test.ts
Checks whether a worktree commit is an ancestor of the default branch. Cleanup also considers merged pull requests when applying the integration requirement. Tests cover settled, inactive, and deleted-thread triggers.
Adds settings rows for unchanged and landed worktrees. The landed-worktree row appears when all connected environments report the capability. Updates search terms and project settings documentation.

Verified exact head 12dcac9850858bbd3ef830a26096e5a84f5a0af4 on a Linux Boat VM with the real dev server, repo Playwright, /usr/bin/google-chrome, and Codex gpt-6.1-sol through the local proxy. No source changes were needed.
Created a real Git repository and bare origin, added it as a project through the web UI, and used the composer to create a new worktree and ask Codex to commit proof.txt without pushing. Repeated the same prompt and data on github/main (5732bbee39) and the PR head. Configured settled cleanup to 0 days and settled the thread through its action menu. Restarted each server to release its live provider session, then waited out the settlement grace period. Only one dev server ran at a time.
Main: the clean worktree containing an unpushed commit was removed, with Settled for 0 days.
PR, Only delete landed worktrees enabled: the same scenario was kept, with Has commits that are not on the default branch. The setting and 0-day retention persisted across restart.
Neighbor, local changes: pushed the worktree's exact HEAD to the local remote's main, then edited the tracked file. Cleanup kept it with Has uncommitted changes (1 file).
Neighbor, landed and clean: restored that verification edit and clicked Delete now. Cleanup removed the worktree with Settled for 0 days; checked the directory was absent and git worktree list contained only the project checkout.
Ran cd apps/server && vp test run src/storageCleanup.test.ts through blacksmith-check after installing dependencies on the worker: 126 tests passed, including the landed-only trigger cases. GitHub reports 22 successful and 6 skipped CI checks on this head, with none failing or pending. This is a runtime verification, not a new full check:changed run.

Native desktop, iOS/Android, macOS/Windows, remote/relay/tunnel connections, mixed-version environments, and other providers were not exercised on this Linux VM. The live scenario used settled cleanup and Git ancestry into a real local bare remote; it did not wait days for inactivity or exercise deleted-thread cleanup, per-project overrides, or an external GitHub squash/rebase merge. Those paths are not claimed as runtime-verified. Dev servers and the task's Blacksmith worker were stopped after verification.
In the last month, 432 of my 433 threads on one Mac ran in a worktree, about 14 new worktrees a day. With the cleanup rules off, on Oct 21 I had an agent remove 35 finished worktrees by hand, which freed 13.6 GB.
