feat(fx): subagent threads show child steps and full replies - #27002
Revived as #29389 on rebased head 45c9a52b831bd531bee73b7b1a4ba52b6a4aa3b4. GitHub rejected reopening this PR because its closed branch was force-pushed/recreated; temporarily restoring the archived head did not permit reopening. The replacement retains the prior evidence and contains the current code, regression fix and validation. The original description below is historical and describes the pre-rebase implementation, including the now-superseded static session metadata option.
Problem
fx clips every ACP tool result to a 200-byte preview and streams none of a sub-agent's frames, so an fx sub-agent's thread showed only its task and a reply cut off after a couple of lines.
Change
Opt in.AcpSessionRuntime gets a sessionMeta option sent on session/new, session/load and session/resume. fx sets _meta.fx.hooks.captureContent (fx 0.0.14+) and uses the hooks only when the response confirms hooksVersion: 1. When fx doesn't confirm (fx 0.0.13), threads keep today's ACP-only view. The option does nothing unless a provider sets it.
Child steps.packages/provider-fx/src/server/subagents.ts (the sub-agent code moves there from adapter.ts) feeds libfx/hook events into the ACP adapter's existing child-session projection. On delegationdispatched, the child session maps to the subagent call's child thread. The child's tool.start, tool.end and tool.result become steps, and its own text between tool calls becomes messages. Review, compaction and title model calls are skipped.
Full reply. The reply comes whole from the root call's tool.end or tool.result, whichever first has output. In a parallel batch fx holds every tool.result until the slowest call ends, but tool.end arrives at once. The {ok, result} JSON is parsed, and a note marks a reply fx cut at 64 KiB. fx completes the ACP call before it reports the result, so the sub-agent stays running for that short gap. Delegation phases drive status, and yielded shows as idle.
Volume. Content capture is all-or-nothing. Unused events are dropped when they're decoded, and nothing logs or persists them. The full reply lives only in the turn's in-memory tool state. The fixture recorder strips model.start request content.
Reload. Child events are followed only while their call runs. A reloaded fx 0.0.15 session replays finished subagent calls with the 200-byte preview and no steps, and that leaves already-projected child threads alone.
Session switching. fx asks clients not to create, load or resume a session while a prompt runs. T3 runs one fx process per thread and only switches sessions at turn start, before the prompt is sent.
User docs: the Sub-agents section of providers-fx.md.
#26969 also touches FxAdapterV2.test.ts and the fx fixtures, so whichever lands second needs a small rebase.
Scope and approval
No prior issue. This extends the fx provider's existing sub-agent projection with an opt-in protocol fx already ships. It adds no setting, UI or contract change. The only shared change is the sessionMeta runtime option, which is unset for every other provider.
Verification
subagents.test.ts: plays hook events and ACP updates in fx's real order, taken from a live recording, through the real ACP tool-state merge. Covers steps, narration, the whole reply, the held status until the result arrives, truncation, failure, yield and cancel.
New replay fixture fx_subagent_hooks: a live fx 0.0.15 recording of two parallel sub-agents reading seeded files. It asserts steps titled like "Read package.json", a full reply over 200 bytes shown once, and nothing leaking into the parent.
FxAdapterV2.test.ts: a reload test plays fx 0.0.15's captured session/load replay of finished subagent calls. Nothing touches the earlier child, and the next sub-agent shows its steps, with hooks confirmed through the load.
The nine existing fx fixtures, recorded on fx 0.0.14 without hooks, now expect the opt-in on session/new. Their responses don't confirm hooks, so they cover the fallback.
fx clips every ACP tool result to a 200-byte preview and streams no
sub-agent frames, so an fx sub-agent's thread held only its task and a
cut-off reply.
T3 now opts into fx's libfx hooks on session/new, load and resume, and
uses them only when fx confirms hooksVersion 1. Older fx keeps the
ACP-only view. A dispatched child's tool calls and its narration between
them become steps in its existing child thread, and its reply comes whole
from the root call's tool.end or tool.result. Delegation phases drive the
child's status. Unused events, including model.start request content, are
dropped at decode and nothing retains them. Child events are followed only
while their call runs, so a reload, which replays finished calls without
their steps, leaves projected threads alone.
The new fx_subagent_hooks fixture is a live fx 0.0.15 recording, and an
adapter test plays fx's recorded load replay. Existing fx fixtures now
expect the opt-in and cover fx not confirming it.

The FX ACP runtime now sends hook-capture metadata with session requests and routes FX subagent hook events into ACP updates and child-thread projections. Replay normalization, FX fixtures, tests, and provider documentation were updated to cover this behavior.
ACP session requests can include optional metadata for new, load, and resume operations. The FX runtime and replay fixtures set hook-capture metadata. Replay normalization removes request content from inbound model.start frames and replaces instruction content.
The FX provider decodes subagent calls and hook outcomes, routes child-session events, and enriches ACP updates. Tests cover routing, outcomes, truncation, and ignored events.

Replay tests and fixtures validate subagent projections across reloads and child threads. The documentation describes child-thread contents and reply limits.

fx echoes the whole prompt as the libfx/hook turn.start input, so the
fx_subagent_hooks recording kept T3's instructions and runtime
instructions there, though the transcript header says T3-owned prompt
text is normalized. The recorder now applies the same placeholders to
that echo as to the outbound prompt, and the fixture's one turn.start
frame is rewritten the same way.

Map terminal delegation phases before the missing-output fallback.
FX defines delegation.phase as failed, yielded, or cancelled, but delegation events do not contain output. The output arrives separately on tool.end or tool.result. When such a terminal delegation event reaches hookedSubagentStatus before output, the current branch returns "running" instead of the terminal status. The child subagent can then remain active and block settlement.

The PR adopts a new fx hook protocol and enables all-or-nothing content capture on every fx session to add child tool/narration timelines and full replies. That extends the existing clipped task/result projection with new capture, lifecycle and reload policies; it is a substantial capability change without a maintainer-triaged issue or approved direction.
Obtain explicit maintainer agreement on enabling fx content capture, child timeline scope, volume/lifecycle tradeoffs and reload semantics before resubmitting.

feat(fx): subagent threads show child steps and full replies

The revival is #29389, preserving this PR's final implementation and all prior evidence. GitHub rejected reopening with HTTP 422: “state cannot be changed. The fx-subagent-hooks branch was force-pushed or recreated.” Temporarily restoring the archived head did not permit reopening either; the fork branch now contains the validated rebased head.
I disagree with the closure at event 34691768199 under the problem/scope requirement. The problem was already concrete: child threads omit tools/narration and clip replies to roughly 200 bytes. Approval of this solution is a separate, unresolved decision. Enabling all-or-nothing capture, its volume/lifecycle tradeoffs and reload semantics still need maintainer review; this revival does not claim agreement on those choices.
The rebase uses #26968's existing metadata callback and drops the superseded static runtime hunk. CodeRabbit's finding is fixed in the terminal-phase handling: failed/yielded/cancelled phases settle before the missing-output fallback. The regression first failed for all three phases, with and without an ACP preview, then passed. All 3 router tests, all 10 fx replay scenarios and check:changed pass; the current receipt records the results.
The replacement retains the historical screenshots, live fx 0.0.15 fixture/reload evidence and successful original-head CI, separately labeled from current checks. UI/CLI runtime proof was not refreshed. #26998 and #26994 remain independent revivals; source overlap does not establish technical coupling.
