Problem

Importing projects and conversation history from Claude Code and Codex is only possible once, in the last step of the welcome wizard. If a user skips it, imports only some projects, or keeps using Claude Code / Codex outside T3 Code afterwards, there is no way to run the import again short of redoing first-run setup.

Change

  • Settings → Projects gets an "Import from Claude Code and Codex" row (shown when no single project is selected). Its Import projects button opens a dialog with the exact same import step as the wizard: same scan, grouping, default selection, permission checks, and warnings.
  • The dialog scans the connected environments in the current settings scope that grant orchestration:operate; the button is disabled when there are none. The environment list is frozen when the dialog opens so a reconnect elsewhere does not rescan mid-selection.
  • Re-running the import is safe: the server already reuses existing projects and skips conversations that were imported before, so a second import only adds new history. Existing projects therefore stay in the default selection, as in the wizard.
  • After an import the dialog closes and shows the same success or partial-import toast as the wizard. It does not navigate away from Settings.
  • ImportStep and its list components move unchanged from WelcomeWizard.tsx into onboarding/ProjectImportStep.tsx. The only new prop is skipLabel, so the dialog can say "Cancel" instead of "Do not import projects".
  • A settings-search entry makes the row findable from settings search and the command palette.
  • docs/user/welcome-wizard.md mentions where to import later.

Surfaces: web and desktop share this UI. Mobile has no project import (not even in onboarding), so nothing changes there. No contract or server changes.

Scope and approval

There is no prior Ideas discussion or maintainer approval yet. This exposes an existing capability (the onboarding import) from one more entry point and reuses its code unchanged. Happy to move this to an Ideas discussion or reshape it if you'd rather handle it differently.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests, and react compiler all pass.
  • WelcomeWizard.import.browser.test.tsx (3 tests) passes against the extracted component, so the wizard import behaves as before.
  • Manual pass in the web dev client (isolated .t3 seeded with migrate-dev-db): Settings → Projects shows the new row; Import projects opens the dialog, which lists real Claude Code / Codex projects with the usual default selection; Escape / Cancel closes only the import dialog and leaves Settings open.
  • Not checked manually: running a full import from the Settings dialog (same code path as the wizard, covered by the browser test above) and the desktop app.

No new tests: the dialog is thin wiring around the shared, already-tested import step.

Screenshots (before: no import entry in Settings; after: new row and dialog) to follow in a comment.

Model and harness: Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code in T3 Code.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

The project import from the welcome wizard was only reachable once, during
first-run setup. Settings → Projects now has an "Import projects" row that
opens the same import step for the connected environments in the current
settings scope, so users can import later or pick up newer conversations.

The wizard's import step moves into its own ProjectImportStep component that
both the wizard and the new dialog render.

🟡 Medium settings/settingsSearch.ts:275

The import-projects search result cannot reach ImportProjectsSection in any scope: without an explicit scope, it inherits project from /settings/projects, so the environment-scope boundary blocks it, while selecting a project hides the import section. Set this entry's scope to environment-defaults so the result is available in environment settings.

Fixed in 1c6fa21: the entry now uses scope: "environment-defaults", and settingsSearch.test.ts asserts it is reachable in the all and environment scopes but not in project.

Approvability

Verdict: Would Approve

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Settings gains an opt-in dialog that reuses the existing project and conversation importer, preserving its permission and workspace safeguards. The supplied search-navigation finding remains subject to the separate blocking gate.

Without its own scope the entry inherited the Projects page's project scope,
but the import row only renders when no project is selected.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The import flow now uses a shared ProjectImportStep in the welcome wizard and Projects settings. Projects settings can scan writable environments and open the import dialog. Settings search and onboarding documentation include this entry point.

Changes: Project import

Layer / File(s) Summary
Import state and execution
apps/web/src/components/onboarding/ProjectImportStep.tsx
The shared step tracks selection and access, imports project thread history, and completes with warning and imported-thread details.
Candidate selection and presentation
apps/web/src/components/onboarding/ProjectImportStep.tsx
The step renders scan states, candidate groups, selection controls, candidate metadata, and its shared shell.
WelcomeWizard integration
apps/web/src/components/onboarding/WelcomeWizard.tsx
WelcomeWizard replaces its local import implementation with ProjectImportStep and retains the existing import-stage props and completion wiring.

Projects settings opens the import dialog for environments with operate scope. The dialog scans those environments and reports completion. Settings search, its scope tests, and onboarding documentation describe the entry point.

The scan query stays fresh for 30 seconds, so reopening the dialog right after
an import showed the previous list. Refresh settled scans once on open; scans
still in flight are left alone so a first open does not scan twice.

I addressed the bot review findings:

  • Macroscope (settings search could not reach the import row): fixed in 1c6fa21. The import-projects search entry now uses scope: "environment-defaults", so it resolves in the all and environment scopes, where the row is shown. settingsSearch.test.ts covers this; the new assertion fails without the fix.
  • CodeRabbit (reopening the dialog could show a cached scan up to 30s old): fixed in fc141d5. On open, the dialog refreshes each scan that already has a settled result. Scans still in flight are skipped, so a first open does not run the filesystem scan twice.

vp run check:changed passes. Copilot did not review because of a quota limit.

Follow-up Comments

Outside diff Block Settings import while the refresh is pending.

17-29: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Block Settings import while the refresh is pending.

The dialog refreshes cached scans on mount, but ProjectImportStep keeps cached candidates selectable and leaves Import enabled while scan.isPending is true. The server importer uses the scanner’s cached candidate snapshot until the refresh completes. If a new transcript file appears after that snapshot, an immediate import can omit it.

Pass a Settings-only gate to ProjectImportStep and disable Import while any scan is pending.
