Problem

A 404 for a thread's snapshot is stored like a thread.deleted event: the detail state goes deleted and its subscription parks for good. So a thread read before the server creates it stays on "Send a message to start the conversation." for the rest of the session, even after the shell lists it and the agent finishes. Only a reload recovers it.

#27522 removed the read that hit every new thread on nightly 20261030.3917. The state still cannot recover, so any other early read brings the same outage back. From reading the code, one path remains on main: after an uncertain multiple-model send, "Open thread" can open an id whose create is still in flight.

Fixes #27623.

Change

makeEnvironmentThreadState now tells a 404 from a delete event. A delete event stays final. After a 404:

  • It waits for the shell to list the thread, then loads it in the same scope, so an open view recovers without a remount.
  • A new session asks the server again.
  • The 404 is never kept in the resume cache, so a later mount asks again. fix(client): a new thread's content no longer stays blank after an early 404 #27722 makes a similar change for remounts. It does not cover a view that stays open.
  • If the shell already lists the thread, the socket decides, so a stale 404 cannot loop.

It waits on the shell instead of polling, and reads the shell only while parked on a 404, so healthy threads pay nothing. Web and mobile both pass their shell snapshot.

A route for a thread the shell does not list still leaves on a 404, as it does today.

DiffPanel, named in #27623, is not a second trigger: useThreadRouteRef reads route params, so it is null on /draft/:id.

Scope and approval

One problem: a 404 is treated as permanent. This is step 2 of the fix suggested in #27623, which has reports from macOS, Windows and Linux but no maintainer triage yet, so it may need a maintainer's call on direction. There is no contract or server change.

Verification

Tests. Four new cases fail on main and pass here: recovery while mounted, recovery after leaving during the cache removal, a new session after a 404, and a listed thread that answers 404. A fifth guards that a delete event stays final. threads-atoms and threads-sync: 54 passed, 4 of them fail without the fix. vp run check:changed passes, as do ChatView.browser.test.tsx and mobile's threads.test.ts.

Real app. Isolated dev server with no seeded data, Replay (dev) provider, headless Chromium: open a new thread, wait about 5 seconds, send, let the turn finish, then switch away and back. To stand in for an early read I temporarily restored the runStopAtom(activeThreadRef) line that #27522 removed.

Early read present Reply while the thread stays open After switching away and back
main never appears "Send a message to start the conversation."
main + #27722 never appears appears
This PR appears appears

Without the early read, this PR behaves like main: no /bounded request until launchThread, then 200 and subscribeThread.

This PR with the early read:

 5.44s GET /bounded f11c5346 -> 404
10.20s orchestration.launchThread
10.49s GET /bounded f11c5346 -> 200
10.57s subscribeThread f11c5346
While open After switching back
Before Before, while open: only the user message Before, after switching back: the empty placeholder
After After, while open: the full reply After, after switching back: the full reply

On nightly 20261030.3917 (macOS desktop), all four new threads in my server trace had a /bounded 404 before thread.create.

Not checked: mobile at runtime (typecheck and unit tests only), remote environments, and real providers. The reproduction uses a restored line, not a live path on main.

… reload

A 404 for a thread's snapshot was stored like a delete event, so a thread
read before the server created it stayed blank for the whole session. The
state now waits for the shell to list the thread and loads it in place.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 10cf372

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Web and mobile threads can recover from an early 404 when the shell subsequently lists them, without requiring a reload. The change is confined to client synchronization and cache handling while preserving final deletion behavior.

Walkthrough

Thread state now uses shell listings to distinguish a provisional missing snapshot from a final delete event. If a missing thread appears in the shell, the state resets and retries snapshot loading. Application wiring and tests cover recovery and deletion behavior.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified as-is at 10cf3723d471be5c2477ae373902dc7a16a91f37. reproduced the bug first on github/main (5fe18d79ac), then repeated the same flow on the exact pr head. installed each checkout with vp i, used separate empty dev state, and stopped main before starting the pr server. no source changes, mocks, replay provider, fixtures, or fabricated responses.

used repo Playwright with /usr/bin/google-chrome on linux. added /home/user/verification-repo, a real git repository, through the local-folder ui. selected codex gpt-6.1-sol and completed real provider turns.

reproduction: created a draft through the ui, read its generated thread id from local storage, and opened its normal thread route in a second authenticated browser context with separate draft storage before sending. this produced a real server 404 and the expected redirect. sent the draft from the first client, waited for the real codex reply, then clicked its sidebar row in the second client without reloading.

  • main: the sending client showed EARLY-READ-RECOVERED, but the second client stayed on "Send a message to start the conversation." it never requested another snapshot.
  • pr: the second client fetched 200 and displayed EARLY-READ-RECOVERED.
  • nearby behavior: a normal new-thread turn completed; a follow-up in the recovered thread returned FOLLOWUP-OK; switching away and back preserved both replies. deleting the separate normal thread through the ui removed its sidebar row and cleared its open view in the other client.
  • focused existing tests through blacksmith: threads-atoms.test.ts and threads-sync.test.ts, 54 passed. existing pr ci reports 34 successful checks. no new commit or push was needed.

same project, model, prompts, and reply content in the before/after captures; generated titles differ.

native ios/android and electron, macos/windows, relay/tunnel or multiple environments, other providers, and the actual interrupted multiple-model-send toast path. this reproduction deliberately opened the real pre-creation route; it did not induce a transport timeout. recovery while continuously mounted and recovery on session replacement were covered by the focused existing tests, not independently triggered through the running ui. the normal unlisted-route redirect occurred in this exercise.

Wait for cache removal to start before unmounting.

The deleted state is published before remember and cache.removeThread(...). The stalled harness resolves removalInterrupted only from removeThread’s interrupt handler. If unmounting occurs first, the deferred remains unresolved.
