fix(server): t3_thread_list clamps an oversized limit instead of failing - #27814
t3_thread_list rejects a limit above 100 with -32602: Invalid parameters for tool 't3_thread_list': Expected a value less than or equal to 100. The Codex harness does not show the model a tool parameter's maximum, and the field had no description, so an agent cannot know about the bound until the call fails and it has to retry. #22901 fixed this for t3_thread_read's page sizes. t3_thread_list, its sibling in the same contract file, still fails the old way.
Call path: an agent calls t3_thread_list with { allProjects: true, limit: 200 }. McpServer decodes the arguments against OrchestratorMcpThreadListInput (packages/contracts/src/orchestratorMcp.ts). The PositiveInt.check(isLessThanOrEqualTo(100)) refinement fails, so OrchestratorMcpService.listThreads never runs.
Change
OrchestratorMcpThreadListInput.limit uses the existing clampedPositiveInt(100), as t3_thread_read does. A value above 100 decodes to 100, and nextCursor already pages through the rest. 0 and negative values still fail.
clampedPositiveInt moves above OrchestratorMcpThreadListInput so both inputs can use it. Its body is unchanged.
The input schema is used only by the MCP tool and OrchestratorMcpService.listThreads. t3 thread in the CLI already passes limit: 100.
Scope and approval
This is a small, focused fix for an obvious bug. It applies the clamp that #22901 merged for t3_thread_read to the next tool with the same hidden bound, and changes one schema field. Behavior and the result shape stay the same for every value that worked before.
Verification
Added two tests to apps/server/src/mcp/McpHttpServer.test.ts that call the tool through the real MCP server decode path:
clamps a t3_thread_list limit above its maximum instead of rejecting the call: limit: 200 reaches the handler as 100, and limit: 7 stays 7.
still rejects a t3_thread_list limit below its minimum: limit: 0 still fails, and the handler is not called.
Without the contract change:
× clamps a t3_thread_list limit above its maximum instead of rejecting the call

tsc --noEmit passes in packages/contracts and apps/server. Lint and format pass on packages/contracts/src and apps/server/src/mcp, and knip passes in the commit hook.
The clamped schema no longer lists maximum, so the MCP tool list shrinks: agentContextBudget.json records mcpToolListJsonBytes 46007 → 45993 (AgentContextBudget.test.ts passes). I left out a limit description to keep agent context from growing.
Not checked: a live Codex session calling the tool. Other MCP tools with a hidden page-size maximum still reject oversized values: t3_project_list and t3_queue (limit 1 to 100), t3_thread_search (limit 1 to 50, schema shared with the RPC) and t3_worktree_list (VcsListRefsInput.limit, shared with the RPC). I left them out to keep this PR to one tool.
Codex does not show the model the `maximum` of a tool parameter, so an agent
asking t3_thread_list for more than 100 threads got an invalid-parameters error
and had to retry. The limit now clamps to 100 on decode, as t3_thread_read's
page sizes already do, and its description states the range.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Oversized thread-list limits now clamp to 100 instead of failing. The default remains 50, and existing pagination and response-size bounds remain in place.

Walkthrough
The MCP thread-list input now clamps decoded limits above 100 and rejects limits below 1. Recording-toolkit tests cover oversized, valid, and zero limits. The configured MCP tool-list byte count decreases from 46007 to 45993.
clampedPositiveInt(maximum) clamps decoded values above the maximum and rejects values below 1. OrchestratorMcpThreadListInput.limit uses a maximum of 100. Encoding preserves the supplied value. The mcpToolListJsonBytes value changes from 46007 to 45993.
Test thread-list limits apps/server/src/mcp/McpHttpServer.test.ts
The recording toolkit registers and routes t3_thread_list. Tests check that 200 becomes 100, 7 is preserved, and 0 is rejected without recording a call.

Add the limit description to the advertised schema.
t3_thread_list derives its advertised parameters from OrchestratorMcpThreadListInput. The limit field currently has no model-facing description. Because the codec hides numeric bounds, a model may send a value above 100 without knowing that the server will clamp it, which can return fewer threads than requested.

On CodeRabbit's "Add the limit description to the advertised schema": declining. The previous round removed that description on purpose. Any description of limit grows mcpToolListJsonBytes above main's, and the Agent context budget workflow fails unless a maintainer adds the agent-context-increase label. Even "description":"Max 100" adds about 24 bytes, more than the 14 the clamp saves. The clamp alone fixes the failure: an oversized limit now returns 100 threads and a nextCursor instead of an error. If maintainers want the bound advertised, adding the description plus the label is a one-line follow-up.
kept MarcoDotIO's implementation and commits: reusing the existing clamp is the smallest fix. merged current main (80a2351) and removed one redundant test comment. no behavior or coverage was dropped. the diff remains three files.
verification through blacksmith-check:
reproduced the regression with main's schema: limit: 200 fails with -32602; zero remains rejected.
restored the fix: all 33 focused MCP/toolkit/context-budget tests pass. 200 reaches the handler as 100, and 7 stays 7.
vp run check:changed 80a2351fcb909034e65a512dfabeb3cdfd367762 passes format, lint, knip, graphql, affected-package typechecks, and 32 tests.
two independent code reviews found no issues at fa013b5.
unverified: a live Codex turn and remote/relay transport. this is a server schema fix with no UI change. CI is running on the pushed head.
the earlier request for a parameter description remains declined: the clamp fixes decoding without growing the agent context budget, and pagination already exposes nextCursor.

on main, the agent's t3_thread_list({allProjects:true,limit:200}) failed with -32602: Expected a value less than or equal to 100.
on the pr, the same call succeeded. with titleContains:"pagination verification" selecting the 101 threads, the real provider calls returned:
also called t3_thread_read on the current real thread with limit:200: success, five message items, hasMore:false. inspected the provider's actual tool arguments and results, rather than relying only on its final prose.
ran on a task-owned blacksmith worker:

latest-head github checks have no failures or pending checks; six checks are skipped. runtime transcript.

native ios/android, the electron client, other providers, and remote/relay/tunnel connections were not exercised. the web client and local codex path were exercised. t3_thread_read accepted an oversized limit, but its exact upper cap was not observable on the short thread. this is a server-schema change with no visual or motion change; evidence is the live tool transcript and client captures.
verification tooling note: a quoting mistake while preparing this comment accidentally invoked the scoped tests locally. that attempt failed during vitest runner setup. the 33 passing tests above were run independently through blacksmith-check.
