perf(server): use native Windows APIs for preview discovery - #28239
Windows preview discovery shells out to netstat and tasklist during scans, adding subprocess overhead to an existing polling path.
Change
Use GetExtendedTcpTable and QueryFullProcessImageNameW through ffi-rs for Windows listener discovery and cached process names. Keep netstat/tasklist as the fallback when native discovery fails. Preserve ownership filtering, configured URLs, and the policy against automatic HTTP probes for discovered listeners. Native bindings load lazily.
Scope and approval
Focused server performance improvement to existing preview discovery. No client UI or wire-contract changes. No prior maintainer approval link is available in this thread.
Before and after benchmarks
Measured October 31, 2026 on an AMD Ryzen 5 5600 (6 cores / 12 threads), Windows 11 26H2 x64 build 26300.9711, Node 24.18.0, Effect 4.0.5, and ffi-rs 1.3.2.

SHA-256 checks confirm the current production scanner, native adapter, and process runner match the measured sources.

Arithmetic means of production PortDiscovery.scan elapsed time with real Windows listeners: 360 observations, balanced AB/BA ordering, 24 before/after pairs per case except 12 pairs for first-use discovery. Fixed sample size; no significance-based stopping. Mean change is (this PR mean / main mean - 1) * 100; negative values mean less scan time.
Service acquisition, listener launch, module imports, and cleanup are outside the scan timer. The fresh-Node case includes lazy ffi-rs loading and native-library initialization during the first scan. Other cases share a measurement process: uncached cases use fresh services; cached cases exclude one preparatory scan. Baseline static import paths were rewritten only for equivalent module resolution; its scanner body was unchanged.
Prespecified paired 99% bootstrap intervals (20,000 seeded resamples) favor native discovery in every active case. Idle's interval crosses zero, so no idle improvement is established. Every scan was checked for expected fixture ports, PIDs, process names, and terminal ownership; no automatic HTTP requests occurred. Active discovery launched zero command subprocesses with this PR, versus two with cached names and three or ten with uncached names on main.
These results measure scanner overhead on one Windows x64 machine. The three-second polling interval is unchanged. They do not establish whole-app, Preview appearance, FPS, or CPU-utilization gains, and there is no single overall percentage without workload-frequency weights. The interval-timer responsiveness measurement was inconclusive because Windows timer granularity dominated it. ARM64, full installers, Node SEA, and fresh packaged Electron/ASAR execution were not validated by this run.
Raw evidence: 360 records in observations.jsonl, SHA-256 4aac283f24dc9a2cef0b492d8a5f0e57a851e916bbf5c23c055bfb688c335d2a; retained alongside summary.json, analysis-plan.json, and provenance.json. No new benchmark run was performed while preparing this description.
Verification
On Windows, ran the two focused files with the server Vite config: 21 passed, 1 skipped. Coverage includes real IPv4/IPv6 wildcard and loopback listeners, process names, native scanner dispatch, ownership filtering, caching, configured URL preservation, no automatic probes, and netstat fallback after native failure.
The test simplification commit leaves production source identical to the benchmarked candidate 3e24dcd.
Formatting and lint passed in the commit hook. Knip was blocked by missing pdfjs-dist/package.json in the web config; the hook was bypassed for the test-only follow-up commit. Root test initialization hit the same missing dependency; running with the server config passed.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Windows preview discovery switches to native APIs while retaining command fallback and existing ownership handling. The change remains read-only and does not broaden network probing or change product defaults.

Walkthrough
Windows preview discovery now uses a native service to scan TCP listeners and resolve process names. Native scan errors fall back to netstat, and missing or failed native process-name lookups fall back to tasklist. Tests cover native behavior, fallback paths, ownership filtering, caching, and configured-URL probing.

Adds native IPv4 and IPv6 listener scans, process-name lookup, and tagged errors. Tests cover listener discovery, process names, PID 0, and unsupported architecture.
PortScanner projects native listener rows and uses native process-name lookup. Native scan errors use the existing netstat path, and missing or failed native name lookups use tasklist. Tests cover fallback, ownership filtering, caching, and configured-URL probing.

Add a fixed message to WindowsTcpProbeError.
The class defines no message getter. The error then reaches consumers with no readable message. PortScanner logs only operation. Any other consumer that formats the error gets empty text. The Effect services guide gives a fixed message, built from attributes and never from cause, as the pattern.

Fall back to tasklist.exe after a native process-name failure
When windowsTcpListeners.processName(pid) fails after native listener discovery succeeds, the handler returns an empty result. The PID is not cached, and withName leaves the owned listener's processName as null. Later scans retry the failed native lookup. Use the existing tasklist.exe lookup in this error path so the name is resolved and cached.

Update the WindowsTcpProbeError handler for windowsTcpListeners.processName to
use the existing tasklist.exe lookup instead of immediately returning an empty
result. Preserve the debug log and route a successful fallback name through the
normal caching path; retain graceful empty-result behavior if the fallback also
fails.
