feat(mobile): cite selected assistant text in the composer - #28544
Desktop users can cite selected assistant text in their next message. Mobile users must manually copy the passage into their draft.
Change
Add Cite to the native assistant-text selection menu. It inserts the selected passage as a standard citation chip at the remembered composer selection, preserving the surrounding draft. Tap the chip to preview or remove it.
Reuse the existing citation format and send path; no server, contract, or provider changes. Reject empty/oversized selections and respect locked drafts, queued-edit saves, and active voice input. Forward selection actions through collapsible markdown sections. Update the composer guide.
Scope and approval
This extends the existing desktop citation workflow to mobile, including iPad and iPhone. The repository owner requested this implementation and upstream PR. No upstream maintainer approval discussion is linked yet; product-direction approval is still pending. This is not claimed as an approval-exempt bug fix.
Verification
vp run check:changed origin/main passed after rebasing onto 6328c8472255: formatting, lint, knip, affected package typechecks, 13 composer-context tests, and React compiler checks.
Extended the existing token-position test; the citation case failed before implementation and passes with the change, including source serialization preservation.
iPad Pro 11-inch (M5), iOS 26.0 simulator, isolated backend and free Replay provider: selected-text Cite, preview/removal, draft persistence after restart, and sending a quote with instructions worked. The persisted message retained the standard citation and source identifiers.
After the upstream rebase, relaunched the app and rechecked selection → Cite → chip insertion.
iPhone and Android share code but were not runtime-tested. No physical-device, relay/tunnel, or web/desktop runtime pass was performed. Those clients and the wire format are unchanged.
Native code-block selections still offer Copy only. Mobile does not jump back to the source. Native offsets are local to rendered sections; desktop source lookup may need its existing unique-text fallback, and repeated text can remain ambiguous. Expanded-details citation handling was checked in source, not exercised in the simulator.
UI evidence
Before uses the original markdown renderer with the same Replay fixture. The captures and recording precede the final upstream rebase; insertion was rechecked afterward. Assets are hosted on the fork in an evidence-only prerelease, not committed to the repository.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Adds mobile quoting of selected assistant text into the composer, including quote preview and removal. The action is user-invoked, uses the existing citation format, and leaves message submission unchanged.

Walkthrough
Mobile users can select assistant response text and insert it as a citation in an eligible draft. The editor recognizes citation tokens, displays their text, and lets users inspect or remove them.

Selectable Markdown provides a Cite action. ThreadFeed ignores blank selections, rejects selections over the configured limit, and passes accepted citation metadata and offsets onward.
Insert citations into eligible drafts apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadDetailScreen.tsx
The thread screen enables citation handling only for eligible drafts. It blocks insertion during recording or transcription on the same draft. Otherwise, it inserts the serialized citation, updates the selection, and focuses the editor.
The editor tokenizes citations and displays their text in chips. Context press shows the quote and optional comment, with removal available in writable editors. The test checks token spans and serialization; the guide describes mobile citation behavior.
A visible Cite action can remain usable while a queued edit is saving and insert text into a draft that should be locked. Prevent that insertion before merging.

Invalidate visible rows when citation eligibility changes.
ThreadDetailScreen removes this callback while a queued edit is saving, but listAppearanceData does not include the callback or its eligibility. As the nearby LegendList comment explains, changing only renderItem does not invalidate visible rows. A visible assistant row can retain its old Cite action and old handler, which can insert text during the save despite canCiteAssistantText. Include citation eligibility in row invalidation, and check current eligibility when the action executes.

Thanks for letting me know and clarifying the process! I’d love to see selected-text citations on iPad and iPhone come out soon—it would be really helpful for my workflow.
Closing because there is no prior maintainer approval for the mobile Cite action that inserts selected assistant text into a draft. Obtain agreement on that scope in Ideas before requesting reconsideration under the contribution policy. #14050 comment
