Problem

After switching a thread from one provider to another, the composer's context meter stayed frozen on the old provider's last number — and the popover re-labelled that number with the new model's name. A thread could claim to be 53k/1m into a conversation the new provider had never seen.

The client picked the newest tokenUsage across every provider turn the thread ever had, and deriveLatestContextWindowSnapshot prefers that over providerThread.contextUsage. Providers report usage differently: pi sets tokenUsage on the provider turn, while the ACP adapters only set contextUsage on the provider thread and never set turn usage. After a pi → ACP switch the retired pi turn is still the newest report, so it wins forever and the new conversation's own usage is ignored.

This is a focused fix for an obvious bug: the client used one conversation's usage report for a different conversation. The fix scopes usage selection to the active provider thread and keeps the client projection's active thread ID in sync; no behavior change outside the switch case.

Fix

Two paths fed the meter from the wrong conversation, and both are now scoped to the active provider thread (the only caller, ChatView, already passes it):

  • latestProviderTurnTokenUsage only considers turns of the active provider thread, so the active conversation wins over "the newest report anywhere".
  • deriveLatestContextWindowSnapshot's compaction fallback skips compaction items belonging to another provider thread. Items without a provider thread predate the split and stay visible.

With no active provider thread both helpers keep their previous, unfiltered behaviour.

The client also had to learn which provider thread is active: the server projection points thread.activeProviderThreadId at a provider thread as soon as it becomes active, but the client store only upserted the provider thread and left the field on the retired one until some later thread event refreshed it. applyOrchestrationV2ProjectionEvent now mirrors the server's guard (same thread, not a queued placeholder), so the meter reacts to a switch as soon as it happens.

Effects worth knowing:

  • While an ACP provider is active and has not reported usage yet, the meter shows nothing instead of another conversation's number — including when the retired conversation had compacted.
  • Switching back to pi shows pi's own report again — the round trip is unchanged.
  • shouldOfferResumeCompaction reads the same value; it short-circuits unless the provider is claudeAgent, so nothing else moves.

Only the web client renders this meter; mobile has no context meter and desktop wraps web.

Tests

apps/web/src/lib/contextWindow.test.ts — 11 passed:

  • new: ignores the retired provider thread's last report after a provider switch
  • new: prefers the active provider thread's older report over a newer retired one
  • new: ignores a retired provider thread's compaction after a provider switch
  • the existing fork cases extend the now-required providerThreadId

packages/client-runtime/src/state/orchestrationV2Projection.test.ts — 18 passed:

  • new: moves the thread's active provider thread to the new one
  • new: keeps the active provider thread for queued placeholders and other threads

The meter cases and the client-store cases all fail on main.

Evidence

Real providers, synthetic fixture (a fresh project and one thread: pi turn → context handoff → KIMI Code turn → context handoff → pi turn). Both columns run the same database state, so only the code differs.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at ec7cd3c

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Token usage now follows the active provider rather than retaining reports from a retired provider. This narrowly scoped correction also keeps existing resume-compaction eligibility tied to the relevant provider, without changing defaults or compaction policy.

You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.

Walkthrough

Provider-thread updates now select the active provider thread for matching app threads, excluding queued placeholders. Context-window selection filters usage reports and compaction entries by active provider-thread identity, while retaining eligible legacy entries without a provider-thread ID.

Changes: Provider-thread context selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared queued-placeholder detection
packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionStore.ts
The contracts package exports a predicate for queued provider-thread placeholders. The server imports it instead of maintaining a local definition.
Active provider-thread projection
packages/client-runtime/src/state/orchestrationV2Projection.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/orchestrationV2Projection.test.ts
Provider-thread update events set the active ID for matching app threads when the provider thread is not a queued placeholder. Tests cover replacement, placeholder, and foreign-thread cases.
Context selection by provider thread
packages/client-runtime/src/state/contextWindow.ts, apps/web/src/lib/contextWindow.test.ts
Usage reports and tagged compaction entries from other provider threads are excluded. Tests cover untagged compaction entries, retired-thread reports, and fork usage.

Explanation

The title "fix(web): context meter no longer keeps the retired provider's usage" names the main change: after a provider switch, the context meter stops showing usage from the retired provider thread. The changeset scopes turn usage and compaction fallback to the active provider thread, and adds client projection tracking of the active provider thread. The title follows the conventional commit format and the repository's example style.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has the Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section explains the bug, the expected behavior, and reproduction steps through a pi to ACP switch. The Change section explains both the usage-selection fix and the client projection fix. The Verification section lists the focused test names with pass counts, and it includes before/after evidence for the UI change. The Scope and approval section explains why the fix qualifies as a focused fix of an obvious bug without a prior issue. It does not link a triaged issue or maintainer approval. The template requires a link or an explanation, and the author gave an explanation, so the section is present but its approval basis rests on the author's own judgment. The evidence images are hosted on a personal fork, which the template allows.

Update the client’s active provider-thread ID during a provider switch.

thread.provider-switched carries the previous activeProviderThreadId, and the client’s provider-thread.updated handler only upserts the new provider thread. The stale ID can therefore persist through the next provider turn. ChatView passes the retired thread to latestProviderTurnTokenUsage, so the new provider’s usage report is excluded. The meter and resume-compaction decision can then use retired usage or omit the current usage.

Mirror the server’s matching-thread and queued-placeholder guards when updating the client thread.

Both bot findings are addressed:

  • Compaction fallback (inline, contextWindow.ts:39) — fixed in fa1e304: the fallback now skips compaction items of another provider thread and still shows items that predate the split, with a provider-switch test.
  • Client-side active provider thread (outside diff, contextWindow.ts:27-39) — fixed in 1b82796. Verified against the source: the server projection sets thread.activeProviderThreadId in provider-thread.updated, while applyOrchestrationV2ProjectionEvent only upserted the provider thread, so the client kept reading the retired thread. The client store now mirrors the server guard, and the placeholder predicate moved to contracts instead of a second copy in the server.

CI is red on this head, but not because of this PR.

Test Server 7 fails in apps/server/src/usage/UsageService.test.ts > reports saved usage of a removed directory only for windows it reaches, and it fails identically on clean main (ce9e016406) with these changes stashed.

It is a date-dependent test. The fixture writes a transcript at 2026-08-01T10:00:00Z and expects the saved scan cache to replay, but UsageService prunes that cache after CACHE_RETENTION_DAYS = 92 (apps/server/src/usage/UsageService.ts:73). 2026-08-01 + 92 days is 2026-11-01, so the test crossed its own expiry today and reached.buckets comes back [] instead of the cached row.

Suggested fix as its own PR (keeping this one to one problem): derive the fixture timestamp from now (for example one day back) instead of a hardcoded date, or pin the service clock. Happy to open it separately.

Nothing else in the run is a finding: Web Preview, Mobile EAS Preview and Deploy relay preview were skipped, one duplicate Mobile Fingerprint Check was cancelled, the other passed, and Agent Context Budget passed.

…ider thread

The server projection points `thread.activeProviderThreadId` at a provider
thread as soon as it becomes active, but the client store only upserted the
provider thread and left the field on the retired one until some later thread
event refreshed it. The client therefore read the previous provider's turns,
usage, and resume-compaction state for a thread that had already moved on.

Mirror the server's guard (same thread, not a queued placeholder) and share the
predicate from contracts instead of keeping a second copy in the server.

Rebased onto main (1280ccd0d2) now that #28603 pinned the clock in UsageService.test.ts — the date-dependent failure I reported above is fixed upstream, so the separate PR is not needed. UsageService.test.ts is 44/44 here after the rebase, and vp run check:changed is green on the rebased tree.

Takeover: merged current main

Merged main (298cb24140) into the branch as merge commit 29626628e0. No rebase.

The only conflict was apps/web/src/lib/contextWindow.ts: main (#27935) moved latestProviderTurnTokenUsage and deriveLatestContextWindowSnapshot into packages/client-runtime/src/state/contextWindow.ts. The resolution takes main's web file and reapplies this PR's two filters in the moved copy, unchanged: turns of other provider threads are skipped, and compaction items of another provider thread are skipped. Both helpers now require the provider thread's id. The new mobile caller, shouldCompactBeforeSend, already passes the active provider thread, so mobile needs no change. Against main, the diff is still the same 6 files, +224/-41.

vp run check:changed against main passed on a testbox: format, lint, knip, graphql, typecheck of 36 packages, and 6 test files with 119 tests. The tests include this PR's contextWindow and orchestrationV2Projection cases. Both bot findings were already fixed in fa1e304 and 1b82796.

Earlier verification by gpt-6.1-sol (head 080cca9cb)

Verified head 080cca9cbb906ecff7c6a80e0b7e7d23c93e7710 on Linux using repo Playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome against vp run dev. Created the project, threads, and real turns through the web app. Enabled the context indicator in Settings > Labs. Used gpt-6.1-sol through Codex app-server, Pi, and OpenCode over ACP, all against the VM's local model proxy. No mocks or seeded fixtures.

Reproduced on github/main at 8760d063e903406c8e8f695b0852c0a15fc1e00f: after Pi -> OpenCode ACP, the completed ACP conversation's meter kept Pi's 38,076-token report (3.8%, 38k/1m), relabelled for the ACP model. The active ACP provider thread actually reported 39,690 tokens.

Stopped main before starting the PR. Copied the app-created state into the PR's isolated dev home for matching data. The same conversation now shows active ACP usage: 39,690 tokens (4%, 40k/1m).

Before, main:

main retains Pi usage after the completed ACP switch

After, PR, same conversation data:

PR shows the active ACP conversation usage

Also exercised fresh switches without reloading: ACP -> Codex -> Pi -> ACP. Codex completed and showed its own 23,505/258,400 tokens (9.1%). Returning to Pi restored Pi usage; subsequent ACP turns used ACP context usage rather than the newer retired Pi turn. The recording shows another live ACP -> Pi -> ACP round trip and completed responses.

live provider switches and their context reports on the PR

Read-only server projection transcript:

main: Pi turn tokenUsage.usedTokens = 38076
main: active ACP contextUsage.usedTokens = 39690
main: UI = 3.8%, 38k/1m (stale)
PR, same data: UI = 4%, 40k/1m
PR, fresh Codex turn: tokenUsage.usedTokens = 23505; UI = 9.1%
PR, fresh Pi turn: tokenUsage.usedTokens = 39228; UI = 3.9%
PR, next ACP turn: contextUsage.usedTokens = 42384; UI = 4.2%

vp run check:changed FETCH_HEAD~3 passed through blacksmith-check after fetching the exact PR's four-commit history on the worker: format, lint, knip, GraphQL, 35 affected package typechecks, 89 tests, and the scoped React Compiler check. The two focused files also passed separately, 30 tests. CI currently reports 28/28 successful checks. No source changes or pushes were needed; the checkout remained clean. The file diff in the captures reflects checkout movement between revisions during setup, not agent edits.

Not verified

Native desktop shell, iOS/Android, remote relay/tunnel connections, other provider adapters, real compaction events, and the no-usage-yet subcase were not exercised. Compaction filtering and queued-placeholder guards passed existing automated tests only. Pi's responses-API connection failed with an empty upstream response; its real chat-completions connection succeeded and was used for verification. Codex app-server worked through its normal proxy configuration.

Do not keep the retired provider thread active during the switch transition.

thread.provider-switched preserves the retired activeProviderThreadId, and the client applies that payload before a replacement provider-thread.updated event changes the ID. During that interval, ChatView resolves the retired provider thread and the new filter still returns the retired provider’s usage. Make the switch transition non-selectable, and ensure it cannot fall through to the all-turn legacy fallback until the new provider thread is active.

Update the provider-thread selection logic in the function containing the
`providerThread` filter so a `thread.provider-switched` transition cannot select
the retired provider thread before the replacement becomes active. Ensure this
transition also cannot fall through to the all-turn legacy fallback; retain that
fallback for other cases where no provider thread is active.

Leaving this as is. thread.provider-switched carries the server's thread payload, and the server keeps activeProviderThreadId on it until the new provider thread's provider-thread.updated arrives. The client mirrors the server. During that short window, main already shows the retired provider's usage. Having the client pick a different active thread than the server would mean changing that server event, which is outside this fix.

@maria-rcks Understood. The transition behavior predates this PR, and the client mirrors the server’s activeProviderThreadId. I will not press for a change within this fix.

The transition limitation remains, but it is separate from the new filtering. Would you like me to open a follow-up GitHub issue for it?

Ignore late provider-thread releases from a different provider instance.

When a queued handoff switches the thread to another provider instance, the old session can still hold background work. When that work releases, provider-thread.updated carries the old provider thread. The current guard accepts it because it checks only appThreadId and placeholder status. Both projections then set activeProviderThreadId to the retired thread. The context meter reads that value, and the server copy survives a snapshot reload.

Compare the event's providerInstanceId with the thread's current providerInstanceId before selecting it. Keep the provider-thread upsert unchanged in both projections.

Suggested fix

Client projection:

         thread:
           event.payload.appThreadId === base.thread.id &&
+          event.payload.providerInstanceId === base.thread.providerInstanceId &&
           !isQueuedProviderThreadPlaceholder(event.payload)
             ? {
                 ...base.thread,
                 activeProviderThreadId: event.payload.id,
               }
             : base.thread,

Server projection, after the thread row is decoded:

                 if (threadRow !== undefined) {
                   const thread = yield* decodeThreadPayload(threadRow.payload_json);
+                  if (thread.providerInstanceId !== event.payload.providerInstanceId) {
+                    break;
+                  }
                   const updatedThread = {

In the provider-thread update handling in both projections, select the event’s
provider thread as active only when its providerInstanceId matches the thread’s
current providerInstanceId, in addition to the existing app-thread and
placeholder checks. Apply the equivalent guard in the server projection after
decoding the thread row, and leave providerThreads upserts unchanged.

Leaving this as is. The server projection on main already moves activeProviderThreadId to any non-placeholder provider thread of this app thread, and the client now uses the same guard. Adding an instance check only on the client would make the client and the server snapshot disagree. Adding it on the server would also change rollback and session selection. Either change belongs in its own PR.

@maria-rcks Understood. The client change mirrors the server’s existing active-thread guard. My proposed instance check would change that behavior, not just fix client projection parity. I won’t press for that change in this PR.

Would you like me to open a follow-up issue to investigate late provider-thread updates, including their effects on rollback and session selection?
