Problem

Running t3 up --base-dir <dir> with local network access on ends with this next step: "Run t3 pair. Use the code on your other device." That command drops --base-dir, so t3 pair checks the default ~/.t3 home and not the one t3 up just set up. You then get one of two results:

  • "No running T3 Code server found."
  • A pairing code for a different server, such as the desktop app running on ~/.t3.

Change

The pairing hint is now built with resolveHostCliCommand("pair", baseDirArgs). That is the same builder and the same --base-dir arguments the "Keep this command running" serve hint in the same function already uses. It also prints the runner form (npx t3 pair …) when the CLI ran through npx, pnpm dlx or bunx, as the serve hint does.

Scope and approval

Very small, focused fix for an obvious bug, so no prior issue: a printed next step points at the wrong T3 home. It follows #23646, which kept --base-dir in the browser setup command. The other t3 up hints on failure paths and the hints in t3 service/t3 connect are not changed.

Overlap search: I searched the local PR index for base-dir, t3 up, t3 pair and "next step". The closest matches are #23646 (browser setup sudo command, merged), #23878 (t3 service install moving a --base-dir service, a different code path) and #27996 (added t3 up). None of them touch this hint. The GitHub search API was rate-limited at the time.

Verification

  • Red on main: the extended case t3 up > restarts the service only when it must: the local network opens fails with expected '…Run t3 pair. Use the code on your other device.' to contain 'Run t3 pair --base-dir /var/folders/…/t3-up-test-….'
  • Green: vp test run src/cli/up.test.ts passes 22/22.
  • vp run check:changed passes: format, lint, knip, graphql, typecheck (3 packages), tests 25/25.
  • Not checked: a real t3 up against launchd or systemd, because that would replace the machine's real background service. The test drives the real up command with a stubbed boot service.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at ec4c91c

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The pairing hint now preserves --base-dir and uses the existing launcher-aware, shell-quoted command formatter. This changes printed guidance without changing pairing permissions, network defaults, or service behavior.

selection unchanged when no home was explicitly selected.

Walkthrough

The t3 up setup output now uses a host-specific pairing command resolved with the selected base directory. The foreground serve command reuses the same base-directory arguments. The test expectation now checks the rendered base directory.

Explanation

The title names the actual change: the t3 up pairing hint now keeps --base-dir. It is specific and follows conventional-commit style. The raw summary and objectives both describe the same change to the pairing hint built with resolveHostCliCommand("pair", baseDirArgs).

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem section gives the wrong-home symptom and reproduction context. The Change section explains the builder reuse. Scope cites a very small obvious-bug fix and an overlap search. Verification gives a red-then-green test run, a full check run, and an explicit list of what was not checked. The description does not cite a triaged issue number or a maintainer approval comment. It relies on the small-obvious-fix exemption, and the reviewer must judge whether that exemption applies. The template also asks for the model and harness, and the description includes this.

Verified in a real dev environment

Verified unchanged head ec4c91cbc0590b6335365f1c2a274fe876d4c92f on a disposable Linux VM, after reproducing on github/main (57cd05904d). No source changes or mocks.

Main printed t3 pair after up --base-dir '/home/user/pair hint verification' --lan --yes. Following that hint from the linked main worktree failed with No running T3 Code server found; explicit --base-dir paired with the actual running server.

The PR CLI printed this instead:

Run `t3 pair --base-dir '/home/user/pair hint verification'`. Use the code on your other device.

Executed that emitted command against the PR's running dev server (a temporary PATH shim routed t3 to this checkout's src/bin.ts):

Pairing with box-node-10bec0f597251ed3 (http://127.0.0.1:13773).

Started main and PR dev servers sequentially with isolated state and no seeding. Used repository Playwright with /usr/bin/google-chrome to pair the web client, add a project rooted at a real git repository, select Codex gpt-6.1-sol, and send a real provider turn. Codex executed shell commands to read README.md and check the branch; the client displayed the correct content and master. The repository stayed clean.

Nearby checks: a fresh browser accepted the pairing token; authentication and the thread survived reload. The path containing spaces stayed shell-quoted. up --no-lan --yes reported local network off and omitted the pairing hint. Real systemd install/update and explicit-directory pairing also worked; the installed service used the released runtime, while the changed CLI and dev app ran from the exact PR source.

Blacksmith passed 54 focused tests across up, pair, and invocation. vp run check:changed against the PR base passed format, lint, both knip checks, GraphQL, typechecks for 3 packages, and 25 tests. The worker needed the PR's parent history fetched before the changed-file comparison could run. Existing CI reports 31 successful checks.

Native desktop, iOS/Android, macOS launchd, Windows PowerShell, physical second-device LAN/tailnet access, T3 Connect, and installed npx/pnpm-dlx/bunx launcher variants were not exercised. The Linux browser and local server path were exercised directly. One-shot T3CODE_HOME propagation remains outside this PR's explicit-flag scope, as discussed above. No performance claim is made. Uploaded video playback and seeking were checked in Chrome.
