fix(desktop): annotation Attach no longer dismisses the page's open panels - #29716
In the desktop browser's annotation editor, clicking Attach (or any other overlay control) also reached the inspected page's document-level press listeners. The overlay lives in a closed shadow root, so the page sees the press retargeted to the overlay host, outside whatever panel it has open. A page that closes a panel on an outside pointerdown, mousedown or click closed it before Attach captured the selected element, and the annotation arrived without its screenshot ("Could not capture the picked element").
Reproduced on main with the reporter's fixture (a page whose document capture listeners dismiss an open section on an outside press): open the section, start Annotate, select an element inside it, click Attach.
Change
apps/desktop/src/preview/PickPreload.ts. Only the overlay's window capture listeners run before a page's own document listeners, so the overlay stops its own presses there:
pointerdown, mousedown and click aimed at the overlay host stop propagating at window capture, so the page never sees them.
Stopping them there also keeps them from the overlay's own listeners inside the shadow root. Each overlay click is therefore redelivered inside the shadow root as a plain non-composed clickEvent, so it never leaves the shadow root and runs no second native activation. Its target is the element the browser would pick:
the common ancestor of the press and release elements, hit-tested at pointerdown/pointerup, since click coordinates are whole pixels;
the pressed element itself when the pointer is captured (touch captures implicitly);
the focused element for keyboard clicks.
The editor's drag handle now starts its drag from the window pointerdown handler, since its own pointerdown listener would no longer fire. Move, up and cancel stay on the handle.
Only trusted input is redelivered. Page script dispatching on the host still cannot reach the closed overlay's controls.
pointerup/mouseup are left alone so the drag handle's pointer capture keeps working. Press-tracking dismissers only act on an up after seeing the matching down, which the page no longer sees.
Real T3 Code desktop app (Electron 44, Linux, Xvfb) with the integrated browser, driven with trusted CDP mouse and keyboard input to the browser guest. The page is the reporter's synthetic fixture. Each side ran from its own build: before = 30084f0018 (main), after = this branch.
The fixture's own ledger after clicking Attach, starting from the selection's pointerup:
Dismiss mode
Before (main)
After
pointerdown
pointerdown target=div annotation=true → dismiss:outside; panel closed, dismissals 1; T3: "Could not capture the picked element. The annotation was kept without the screenshot."
only pointerup/mouseup on the host; panel open, dismissals 0; composer chip shows the annotated crop
mousedown
mousedown target=div annotation=true → dismiss:outside; panel closed; same T3 error
same as above
click
click target=div annotation=true → dismiss:outside; panel closed; same T3 error
same as above
(annotation=true means the event target matched [data-t3code-annotation-ui].)
A separate recording of the bug on main, in the full desktop app with the same synthetic fixture, was posted in the handoff comment on this PR: baseline Attach, Screenshot unavailable. That comment's "after" recording is of a different candidate, not this branch.
Overlay controls on the fixed build, with the panel open throughout (dismissals 0) and no overlay pointerdown/mousedown/click reaching the page:
expand editor;
drag the editor by its handle, which then stays put while hovering afterwards;
switch to the Region tool;
type a comment and submit with Enter.
Touch taps on Attach (CDP touch input) attach with the panel open, including a lift 3 px and 8 px past Attach's edge.
host.click() and a synthetic detail: 0 click dispatched on the host from page script, while Attach has focus, do not submit.
Checks: vp run typecheck (desktop), vp lint and vp fmt --check on the file. The desktop package has no DOM test environment, so no unit test.
Not checked:
before/after captures and recordings (not attached);
macOS and Windows (the reporter is on macOS; the event ordering involved is the same in Blink on every platform);
PDF annotation;
a real touchscreen;
assistive-technology activation of overlay buttons.

…anels
The annotation overlay lives in a closed shadow root, so a page's document
capture listeners saw presses on Attach and the other overlay controls as
presses outside its open panel and closed it before Attach ran. The element
then had a zero rect and the annotation lost its screenshot.
The window capture listeners now stop overlay-targeted pointerdown, mousedown
and click before the page sees them, start the editor drag from there, and
re-deliver the click inside the shadow tree as a plain non-composed Event so
no activation behaviour runs twice.
Fixes#29664
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Handing issue #29664 over to this PR. I stopped our parallel work and requested cancellation of its queued macOS run. I have not tested this PR's head, 60ff1d745041b331fd82675af55584c4afe5913c.
Evidence already collected on corex Linux x64, Electron 44.10.0 / Chromium 152.0.7977.169, in the full desktop app with isolated profiles and the synthetic fixture:
Baseline 55e25385619c7680dad0b0f34f5185187806c57a: trusted Attach pointerdown reached document capture, dismissed the panel, and the actual composer showed Screenshot unavailable.
Our separate candidate 319b1e148778a68859d461f5d9df32b8510df405: panel remained open, dismissal count stayed zero, and the actual composer displayed the selected element's crop. Pointerdown, mousedown and click dismissal variants passed. This recording is evidence for our candidate only.
Linux baseline, actual Attach and failed composer capture:
baseline.mp4
Linux separate candidate, actual Attach and successful composer capture:
candidate.mp4
Our candidate also passed native text/caret editing, pointer and keyboard toolbar activation, expand/aspect/opacity controls, editor dragging, and normal page input after cancellation. A native mechanics probe found that releasing pointer capture can leave a trailing page-targeted mouseup/click; retaining gesture ownership through that click prevented the leak. This is an observation from our implementation, not a finding against this PR.
Regression tests failed on baseline and passed on our candidate. Its 254 focused preview tests, changed-file checks and desktop build passed, with an independent review finding no issues. Native input used CDP, not dispatchEvent or a mocked Attach handler. Linux ran with --no-sandbox. macOS, Windows, native color pickers, touch and focus-trap capture handlers remain unverified by our work.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Overlay interactions are isolated from page dismissal handlers so attaching an annotation preserves open panels. The change is confined to annotation sessions, with trusted-input safeguards and reported desktop verification of the affected controls.

PickPreload now captures annotation overlay pointer and mouse input at the window level. It records trusted pointer targets, starts drag handling from the pointer handler, and forwards trusted overlay clicks to a resolved target.

Trusted event handling and click forwarding apps/desktop/src/preview/PickPreload.ts
Pointer handlers record trusted overlay press and release targets and initiate drag handling. Mouse-down and click events targeting annotation UI stop propagation. Trusted overlay clicks dispatch a bubbling plain click to the resolved target. Listener registration and teardown are updated.
Issue 29664 reports that annotation Attach input reaches the inspected page’s outside-pointer handler before capture. This change stops propagation for overlay input and forwards trusted overlay clicks to a resolved target.

Explanation
[#29664] requires that pressing the annotation Attach control must not trigger the inspected page's outside-press dismissal before the selected element is captured, and the screenshot must attach. The diff in apps/desktop/src/preview/PickPreload.ts addresses this. (1) A window capture pointerdown whose target is an annotation node now calls stopPropagation before the page's document capture listeners run, so the page does not receive overlay pointerdown. (2) A new window capture mousedown listener (onMouseDown) stops overlay mousedown the same way, covering the mousedown dismissal variant. (3) The window capture click handler stops overlay click events and redelivers trusted clicks as a plain non-composed click Event to the target. This keeps Attach's click handler working. The target is the common ancestor of press and release (overlayClickTarget), or shadowRoot.activeElement for keyboard clicks (detail 0). (4) The drag handle's pointerdown logic moved into the window handler, so drag still starts. Untrusted presses and clicks are not redelivered. The author reports before/after ledgers for the pointerdown, mousedown and click dismissal modes, with dismissals 0 and the composer chip showing the crop after the fix. I did not reproduce this runtime behavior. The code mechanism matches the issue's diagnosis. No automated test was added; the issue does not require one, and the author states the desktop package has no DOM test environment.

Explanation
Every hunk in the diff supports the Attach fix. The removed dragHandle pointerdown listener and its teardown line are replaced by the window pointerdown path that starts the drag, so the drag keeps working after the press stops at window capture. The new onMouseDown listener and its teardown line support the mousedown dismissal case. The pressTarget and releaseTarget tracking, the pointerup release-target logic, overlayClickTarget, and the click redelivery support the click redelivery that keeps Attach and keyboard activation working. The isTrusted checks keep page-dispatched events from reaching the closed overlay. pointerup and mouseup handling for an active drag is unchanged except for recording releaseTarget. No unrelated behavior, files, or public declarations changed. The diff touches only apps/desktop/src/preview/PickPreload.ts.

Isolate overlay presses from page window-capture listeners.
If the inspected page registered a window-capture outside-press listener before annotation started, that listener receives the Attach press before onPointerDown runs. stopPropagation() also does not block later listeners on the same window. The page can therefore dismiss its panel before Attach captures it. The new mousedown and click handlers have the same limitation. stopImmediatePropagation() would block later listeners, but not earlier ones; this case needs an input boundary outside the page’s window event path.
