fix(server): cancelling worktree setup no longer leaves its new branch behind - #29781
Starting a thread in a new worktree creates a fresh branch (t3/<hex>), and it is renamed in the background once a name is generated. If you cancel worktree setup before the agent starts, or setup fails before the thread records its workspace, the rollback removes the worktree but keeps the branch. Each cancelled launch leaves a t3/<hex> branch (or the generated branch name, if the rename finished first) in the repository. These branches show up in the branch pickers, and a leftover generated name pushes the next launch to a -1 suffix.
The worktree handoff rollback (WorktreeMcpServiceremoveCreatedWorktree) already removes the worktree and deletes the branch it created. The launch rollback only did the first half.
Change
ThreadLaunchService now tracks the branch it created, using the same pattern as createdWorktreePath:
The branch is recorded in onWorktreeClaimed, together with the path, so a cancel during submodule setup also cleans it up.
When the background rename succeeds, the recorded name is updated. The rename and this update run as one uninterruptible step. The rollback interrupts the rename fiber first, and without this a cancel landing just after git branch -m returned would delete the old name and leave the renamed branch behind. The tests reproduced that race.
After removeWorktree succeeds, the rollback deletes that branch with deleteLocalBranch({ force: true }) and logs and ignores any failure, the same way the handoff rollback does.
Only branches this launch created are deleted. The worktree strategy always makes a new branch, because git branch fails if the name already exists. Reused worktrees never set the created path. Git also refuses to delete a branch that is still checked out in a registered worktree.
Scope and approval
Very small, focused fix for an obvious bug, so there is no prior issue: one rollback skipped half of the cleanup that its sibling rollback does. One file changed, plus tests.
Overlap search: #28373 (open) deletes the branch when git worktree add itself fails inside GitVcsDriverCore.createWorktree. In that case no worktree is claimed, so it does not reach this rollback. The two PRs touch different files and complement each other. #18443 (merged) added the rename interrupt this change builds on. #23618 changes Orchestrator.ts only. #28944 is about folder name collisions.
Verification
Red on main: two existing cancel tests in ThreadLaunchService.test.ts were extended. cancels tracked setup before provider work is released now waits for the rename to finish before cancelling, and fails with expected undefined to deeply equal { cwd: '/repo', refName: 'generated-branch', force: true }. stops an in-flight branch rename when tracked setup is cancelled fails with expected undefined to equal 't3/957d8289'. A new Deferred-based case, deletes a claimed worktree's branch when setup is cancelled before checkout returns, fails without the onWorktreeClaimed line with expected undefined to equal 't3/5dfc5533'.
Green: vp test run src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.test.ts passes 46/46 on the rebased head.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, graphql, typecheck (3 packages) and the changed-file tests all pass.
Not checked: a live cancel in a running app. This is a server-only change with no visible surface.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Cancellation cleanup now removes the new local branch as well as its abandoned worktree, including after a background rename. The change is confined to existing cleanup paths for newly created worktrees.

Walkthrough
The service now tracks the local branch associated with a worktree. During abandoned-worktree cleanup, it removes the worktree first, then attempts to delete the tracked branch. Cancellation tests cover branch deletion at several setup stages.
prepareInBackground records the branch from the worktree claim and completed result. It updates the tracked branch name before the rename operation completes.
Delete branches during cleanup apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.test.ts
After worktree removal succeeds, cleanup attempts to force-delete the tracked local branch and logs deletion failures. Cancellation tests assert branch deletion after branch rename, after a worktree is claimed, and when branch-name generation is interrupted.
Cancelling worktree setup during checkout can still leave the new branch behind. A later launch with the same explicit branch name can then fail. The other cancellation points are handled, so this is a bounded gap in an otherwise correct fix.

Verified exact head 73b12a5fa4931717c13a2841907ce99f779e256f on Linux with the real web app, repository Playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome. Project, setup action and threads were created through the UI. Provider turns used Codex gpt-6.1-sol; no replay provider or mocked services.
Reproduced on github/main (61c3794c32): launch a new worktree, wait for the blocking setup action and generated branch rename, click Cancel. The worktree disappeared, but t3/read-readme-first-line-1 remained in git.
On the PR head, the same cancellation removed both the worktree and its renamed branch t3/read-readme-first-line-2. Existing branches and worktrees remained intact. Retrying and cancelling again also cleaned up.
Retried once more and let setup complete. A real Codex turn read README.md and returned verification repo; the successful worktree and branch remained. The generated name was available again, without another suffix.
Started another thread through the branch picker's existing-worktree option. A second real Codex turn completed in the same worktree, preserving its branch.
Blacksmith: 46/46 focused launch tests passed. vp run check:changed 57cd05904d3a5dc42bd6a6540d3d00f33db7f0c1 passed format, lint, knip, GraphQL generation checks, affected typechecks and 47 tests. The explicit base was needed after fetching history into the worker's shallow snapshot. Existing PR CI showed 31 successful checks, none pending or failing.
Native mobile and Electron shells, macOS/Windows, relay/tunnel connections and other providers were not exercised on this Linux VM. Submodule checkout cancellation, an exact interruption during branch rename, and setup-failure rollback were not reproduced live; the focused tests provide the race coverage. No source changes were needed.
