Problem

When you reopen the iOS app with several remote environments, the cached thread list shows at once, but it stays stale for a few seconds before it updates. There are two causes:

  • After iOS has killed the app, every environment downloads the full thread list (shell snapshot) over HTTP before it subscribes, even though the cache holds a cursor the server could resume from.
  • After a long background the socket is usually dead, but the connect chain starts only when the liveness probe gives up.

Change

This builds on #28487 by @Bil0000 (with merges by @maria-rcks). Its commits are kept unchanged with their authors, and the three commits on top are ours. #28487 already resumes the thread list from the in-memory cursor on a new session and shortens the long-resume probe to 1.5 s. This PR covers the two cases it leaves:

  • Resume from the saved cache after a cold start (ddbe5d3f51). The shell cache now stores a vouch next to the rows, { omissionKey, serverVersion, authoritativeAt }, and stores it only for data that comes from an authoritative server snapshot. On the first session after launch, the client subscribes with afterSequence set to the cached sequence and skips the blocking HTTP snapshot, but only when all of these hold:

    • the omission options match;
    • the server version matches;
    • the vouch is less than 12 hours old.

    Anything else takes the HTTP path as before: no vouch, a legacy cache, a mismatch, an unreadable config, or a failed first resume. Replay does not refresh authoritativeAt, so chained resumes still get a full snapshot at least every 12 hours. That bounds drift that replay cannot fix: the older-settled cut, rows that left the newest window, and projections rebuilt by a server upgrade. Project-metadata enrichment snapshots no longer mark the list as authoritative. The vouch is an optional field, so there is no cache schema bump and older apps still read the cache. Mobile and web both persist it.

  • Start a replacement socket while a long-resume probe waits (ff9cb58627, f01279ffdd). On a remote route, if the probe of the old socket is unanswered 500 ms after a long iOS background, a replacement session starts beside it.

    • A frame or a probe answer on the old socket cancels the replacement. That includes a frame that lands between two frame checks just before the replacement is ready.
    • A ready replacement swaps in. The next attempt adopts it instead of connecting again.
    • A failed replacement leaves the decision to the probe.

    LAN and loopback routes keep the previous behavior.

  • Reload when a reconnect reaches an upgraded server (13330c570f). perf(mobile): faster thread sync, connects, and reconnects on bad wifi #28487's in-memory resume checked only the omission options. It now also requires the server version to match, because an upgrade can rebuild projections that replay would not resend.

  • Drop shell items buffered from a superseded session (2e92c03ee8). switchMap can buffer values across a session change, so a stale snapshot could have been stamped with the new session's vouch. The shell now uses subscribeDynamicWithSession, the same way state/server.ts does, and drops items from a session that is no longer active before they change any state. docs/internals/connection-runtime.md describes the resume probe as it is now.

  • No stuck pending catalog for providers that cannot scan a folder (e7d710dcbc). In perf(mobile): faster thread sync, connects, and reconnects on bad wifi #28487's on-demand catalog refresh, an instance without snapshotForCwd got the machine catalog marked slashCommandsPending: true, which never clears. That instance already keeps its machine catalog in the config stream, so the refresh now returns no cwd snapshot for it.

Why the server replay is enough: it sends a full thread.updated row for every thread that changed, including threads the cache omitted (apps/server/src/ws.ts, orchestration-v2/ShellStream.ts). The client upserts unknown ids, and deletes and archives arrive as thread.removed. A cursor ahead of the head, or a gap over 1000 events or 8 MiB, falls back to a full snapshot.

Scope and approval

This is a performance fix for slow mobile sync, the same problem #28487 addresses, and it is meant to land with or after it. There is no separate triaged issue. If you'd rather review it on its own, the commits after ea338f2022, other than the merge of main, are the whole change.

Verification

  • Every change has a test that fails without it:
    • shell-sync.test.ts has 10 new cases. A table checks resume versus HTTP for: a matching vouch, a vouch just inside the cap, no vouch, another omission key, another server version, a vouch at the cap, and a vouch from the future. Other cases check that a retried or enrichment-only resume reloads over HTTP, that chained resumes keep the original authoritativeAt, and that an HTTP snapshot is stamped.
    • environment-cache-store.test.ts checks the vouch round trip and that a legacy record loads.
    • supervisor.test.ts:
      • the replacement starts at exactly 500 ms, not at 499;
      • the client swaps when the replacement is ready;
      • the client adopts a replacement that is still connecting when the probe gives up;
      • a failed replacement leaves the probe to decide;
      • a frame cancels the replacement, including a frame between two polls;
      • LAN and loopback get no early replacement.
  • vp run check:changed passes: format, lint, knip, graphql, typecheck of 36 packages, 11 test files with 190 tests, and the react compiler check.
    • shell-sync.test.ts: a reconnect to an upgraded server reloads over HTTP. A snapshot buffered from a superseded session is dropped; the test reproduces the buffering deterministically with Deferred gates.
  • ws.test.ts: a non-scanning instance gets no cwd snapshot, and a scanning instance whose scan failed still gets the pending fallback.
  • Reviewed with sol-loop: 5 rounds with gpt-6.1-sol, the last one on the catalog fix (e7d710dcbc). Round 1 found the frame-between-polls race (f01279ffdd). Rounds 3 and 4 checked the two CodeRabbit fixes (13330c570f, 2e92c03ee8). The final round approved.
  • Not verified: I have not measured this on a physical iPhone. The behaviour is proven by the deterministic tests above, not by a device timing. The existing spans environment.initialSync and clientRuntime.state.fetchEnvironmentShellSnapshot should show the HTTP snapshot gone from cold-start resumes.

…inks

These streams waited for one client ack per chunk. On a 300ms link that is
one round trip per chunk. They now use the same bounded in-flight window as
terminal output (8 chunks or 64KB).
A live session that drops now retries after about 250ms instead of 1-2s.
The retry still counts, so a host that keeps dropping backs off as before.
A shell loaded from a server snapshot now resumes from its sequence on a new
session instead of downloading the full HTTP shell again. Cached data, or a
snapshot taken with other omissions, still reloads in full.
When a socket closed, teardown sent an interrupt for each open stream.
Each write to the dead socket waited out the client's 1s interrupt
timeout before the reconnect could start. Writes other than requests
now skip a closed socket, and requests still fail fast.
…kground

After a long background the socket is likely dead. The silent-socket
check no longer waits the extra 2.5s meant for live remote sockets, and
the health check gives up after 1.5s instead of 3s.
…onfig

The config snapshot carried every provider's slash commands and skills,
187KB of 211KB on a real host. Mobile reads them only through the
per-folder snapshot it fetches for the composer, so it now opts out of
the machine-wide lists for providers that can scan a folder.

…er a cold start

After iOS killed the app, the cached thread list was shown but every
environment still downloaded the full shell snapshot over HTTP before
subscribing, so the list stayed stale for seconds.

The cache now records which server snapshot vouches for it (omission
options, server version, time). A first session resumes from the cached
sequence when all three still match and the vouch is under 12 hours old;
anything else reloads over HTTP as before. Project-metadata enrichment
snapshots no longer mark the list as authoritative.
…probe waits

After a long iOS background the old socket is usually dead, but the
connect chain only started once the probe gave up. On remote routes a
replacement session now starts 500 ms into the probe. A frame or probe
answer on the old socket cancels it; a ready replacement swaps in and the
next attempt adopts it instead of connecting again. LAN and loopback
routes keep the previous behavior.

Walkthrough

This change adds validated metadata for cached shell resumes, enables on-demand provider catalogs across client and server RPCs, expands WebSocket stream windows, and changes long-resume recovery to probe existing sessions while starting replacement connections on remote routes.

Changes: Shell Cache Resume

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cache vouch contract and storage
packages/client-runtime/src/platform/orchestrationCache.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/platform/persistence.ts, apps/mobile/src/connection/environment-cache-store.ts, apps/mobile/src/connection/environment-cache-store.test.ts, apps/web/src/connection/storage.ts
The cache record and persistence interfaces support an optional vouch. Mobile and web storage load and save it when present.
Vouch validation and shell synchronization
packages/client-runtime/src/state/shell.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/shell-sync.test.ts
Shell synchronization permits cached resume when the vouch matches the omission settings and server version and is less than 12 hours old. Authoritative snapshots update the vouch; replay and deferred-link updates preserve it.

On-Demand Provider Catalogs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Catalog request contracts and client options
packages/contracts/src/rpc.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/rpc/session.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/server.ts, apps/mobile/src/connection/runtime.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/server.ts
RPC contracts and client configuration support providerCatalogsOnDemand; the mobile connection and server environment enable it.
Server catalog filtering and refresh
apps/server/src/ws.ts, apps/server/src/ws.test.ts
The server filters machine catalogs for cwd-capable providers and returns a pending catalog snapshot when an on-demand cwd snapshot is unavailable. Tests cover provider updates and failed cwd scans.

WebSocket Subscription Stream Windows

Layer / File(s) Summary
Window initialization and coverage
apps/server/src/terminal/OutputProtocol.ts, apps/server/src/terminal/OutputProtocol.test.ts
Window initialization now includes server-config, shell, and thread subscription methods. The pending-chunk limit test covers these methods.

Long-Resume Connection Recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Replacement connection lifecycle and session closure
packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/rpc/session.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/rpc/session.test.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.test.ts
The supervisor manages replacement connection scopes and handoff. The RPC protocol suppresses non-request sends after disconnection, and tests cover session stream termination and retry timing.
Long-resume probe and replacement decisions
packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.test.ts, docs/internals/connection-runtime.md
Remote long resumes can start a replacement while monitoring the existing session. Probe responses, inbound frames, host checks, and replacement outcomes determine whether the supervisor retains or replaces the session. Tests cover remote, LAN, and loopback cases.

Nitpick Move catalog filtering into the provider service.

Move catalog filtering into the provider service.

The subscription handler now reads provider capabilities and applies catalog policy. The refresh handler applies related policy through a separate path. Put both decisions in the provider service so the two responses share one policy. As per coding guidelines, “A transport handler does three things: decode the request, call one service method, and map the service's typed errors to the transport's error. Nothing else.” The path instructions apply the same rule to this file.

Re the CodeRabbit follow-up on ws.ts 3267-3273 (move catalog filtering into the provider service): that code comes from #28487, and its author already declined the same suggestion there, because it is per-client wire shaping. This PR does not change it.

Outside diff Tag shell snapshots with their originating subscription.

Tag shell snapshots with their originating subscription.

The apply block at shell.ts:339 reads activeSubscription when an item is applied, not when the item was produced. subscribeDynamic runs through Stream.switchMap, and the repository notes that switchMap can buffer values across a session change. If a snapshot from a superseded session is applied after the new subscription has written its serverVersion, the vouch at lines 340-347 records the new version. The hasAuthoritativeSnapshot check at lines 474-476 can then accept stale rows as current, and the persisted vouch can carry the wrong version.

Carry the session or subscription identity with each item. Use subscribeDynamicWithSession from rpc/client.ts, then compare that session with the current subscription before the vouch or authoritativeOmission is written. Discard items from superseded subscriptions.

Re the CodeRabbit follow-up on shell.ts 339 (tag shell snapshots with their originating subscription): fixed in 2e92c03. The shell subscription uses subscribeDynamicWithSession, and items from a session that is no longer active are dropped before any state, vouch, or authoritative-omission write. The new subscription resumes from state that was applied, or reloads. Test: drops a superseded session's snapshot applied after the next session subscribes, which failed before the fix.

Hey @emmems, nice find. The cold-start resume is a real gain for mobile: iOS kills the app often, and downloading the full thread list again on weak wifi hurts. We built on your work in #30732, and it keeps your 3 commits with your authorship.

What we changed and why:

  • Parallel replacement socket: not included. That connect skips progress, so it gets only the 15 s per-route timeout and none of the 75 s sync budget. On a thin link it also uses the same bandwidth as the probe it races. We had no measurements to show that it helps, so we left it out for now. A separate PR with numbers would be good.
  • One vouch rule for every resume. One canResume check covers memory and cache: omission key, server version, and age under 12 h. When the cursor is too old or the gap is too large, the server already sends a full snapshot (canReplayPersistedRange in apps/server/src/ws.ts), so a retried resume no longer forces an HTTP load.
  • One bug fixed. After a valid cache resume, generation stayed 0. Thread families, older settled threads, and search wait for generation > 0, so they stayed blocked. A synchronized marker now bumps it once.
  • Smaller: about 500 added lines in 7 files, against about 1,000 on top of perf(mobile): faster thread sync, connects, and reconnects on bad wifi #28487.

#30732 is stacked on #28487. Reviews of either one are welcome. If you see a case we broke, tell us there.

Closing in favor of #30732, which carries the cold-start cache resume and the catalog fix from this PR on top of #28487, with a simpler vouch rule and the generation fix. Thanks @Bil0000. The parallel replacement socket is left out of #30732; I will bring it back as its own PR only with iPhone measurements that show it helps.
