perf(server): stop tracing routine port polling helpers - #30678
Routine retained port polling emits nested helper spans every three seconds, including unchanged results. This is a partial trace-volume reduction for #28196. The reporter attributed about 5% of one capture to the PortDiscovery family; that is reporter-only context, not a measured saving from this patch. No Defender measurement was performed.
Change
Use untraced generators for pollTick, scanUnlocked, and probeWebServers, and a plain function for the semaphore-only scanSnapshot. Keep an explicit PortDiscovery.scan span for requested scans, retention spans, actual probe spans, and existing failure logs. The three-second schedule, discovery work, caching, and notifications stay unchanged.
Scope and approval
This is a small focused performance fix with no product behavior or default changes, following #29758 and #26511. Unlike the redundant favicon work discussed in #16202, this polling is intentional and remains intact. Existing open port-discovery PRs concern polling visibility or platform discovery; this change only reduces helper tracing. Source search found no consumers of the four removed span names.
Verification
GPT-6.1-Sol ran on Windows:
vp test run apps/server/src/preview/PortScanner.test.ts: 19 passed, 1 skipped.
Additional runtime verification reported by Maria at exact head 3ad45433d49db522d53eb75f41279b482cffe301: #30678 (comment) . A disposable Linux dev-client comparison found the four removed helper spans absent, retained operation/probe spans present, and real Codex-owned server discovery, preview and stop controls working. Her report includes recordings and focused checks. I inspected the report; I did not independently repeat that runtime pass. Native clients, Windows/macOS discovery and remote connections remain unverified by that pass, and no CPU/Defender/production byte saving is claimed.
No production trace-byte, CPU, or Defender measurements. Reduced helper-level trace detail is the trade-off; probe spans and failure logging remain.
Implemented with GPT-6.1-Sol through the Codex harness in T3 Code.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This reduces tracing overhead for routine port polling while retaining explicit scan spans, probe tracing, and failure logging. Port-discovery behavior and product defaults are unchanged.

Walkthrough
The port scanner removes named spans from helper and polling operations. scanOnce adds a PortDiscovery.scan span around scanning and projection. Semaphore serialization remains in scanSnapshot.
probeWebServers, scanUnlocked, and pollTick use untraced wrappers. scanSnapshot retains semaphore serialization, and scanOnce adds the PortDiscovery.scan span around scanning and projection.
The port-probe tracing rationale is now documented, and no actionable merge risk remains after normal checks.

Explanation
The title "perf(server): stop tracing routine port polling helpers" matches the change. The diff replaces tracing wrappers on pollTick, scanUnlocked, and probeWebServers with untraced generators, and makes scanSnapshot a plain function, while keeping explicit PortDiscovery.scan spans. It is a conventional commit title in plain language, specific enough for a teammate scanning history.

The nearby comment explains URL selection, not the tracing boundary. Add a short rationale stating that requested scans use PortDiscovery.scan and uncached probes retain PortDiscovery.probeWebUrl spans. This helper is also called from untraced pollTick, so the reason must remain visible beside the function.

Addressed CodeRabbit's tracing-rationale nit in review #30678 (review) with commit 3ad4543. A comment beside probeWebServers now explains that idle polls omit its helper span while requested scans and uncached probes retain their own spans. No runtime change. Formatting, lint and the existing knip commit check passed; the preceding runtime head passed all eight required CI checks. Updated-head CI is pending.

native ios/android, the electron shell, macos/windows listener discovery, other providers, and remote/relay/tunnel connections were not exercised. no cpu, defender, or production trace-byte savings were measured. probe-failure logging was not deliberately fault-injected. the recording and uploaded playback/seek were inspected.
Added your exact-head Linux runtime verification to the PR description, linking the report and preserving its native-platform, remote-connection and measurement limits. The report confirms the intended tracing boundary and server discovery/preview/stop flow; no source change is needed.
