fix(server): request_secret asks for one value per card - #30805
The private secret card accepts one line, but agents could bundle three credentials in one request. Require one secret per call and forbid combining values; update the existing eval to the reproduced three-line handoff and keep each mock result distinct.
Note
Written by gpt-6.1-sol on behalf of Maria
Verified in a real dev environment
Verified through the running web app with repo Playwright, /usr/bin/google-chrome, and real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the local proxy. Created the project and threads through the app against a real git repository, using fresh isolated state and task-only random secret values.
Reproduced on github/main (9e85538535) and the original PR head (3bad363c63): telling the agent the three OVH credentials were copied as three lines produced one combined card. Its single-line input collapsed the three lines into one.
Fixed and pushed 73ee8b91cc4e2d37a67bc84e9c3643575356f718 to the existing head. The tool explicitly requires one secret per call, describes the single-line card, and forbids combining values. The existing eval uses the reproduced prompt and requires exactly three calls. The measured tool-list budget is 47,505 bytes.
With the same prompt, the fixed app produced three separately labelled cards. Saved each through the UI, then the provider executed a shell command that read the three returned files without printing their contents:
Nearby behavior also passed: one token produced one card; empty Save was disabled; Enter saved it; the provider shell confirmed a nonempty file. Decline ended another request, with no repeated prompt or shell command.
Blacksmith vp run check:changed 7f17f515389505a26fe2963e61905cc5d7417963 passed format, lint, knip, GraphQL, typecheck for three packages, and 414 tests across three files. Two independent read-only reviews found no blockers.
Short runtime transcript. Inspected the captures and verified uploaded video playback and seeking in T3's browser.
Not verified
Native iOS/Android clients, Electron on macOS/Windows, other providers, and remote/relay/tunnel connections were not exercised. No OVH API request was made. These model samples establish observed behavior, not a guarantee across all prompts.
The API-replay eval could not run on Blacksmith because the worker lacks the local Codex proxy configuration. The changed-file grader tests passed; integration proof above uses the actual client and provider.
GitHub reports base conflicts on the new head, so pull-request CI has not run there. Scoped Blacksmith checks are green. No merge, rebase, force-push, close, or label change was performed.
The secret card has one masked, single-line field, but the tool
description did not say so. Agents sometimes asked for several values
in one card, for example three API keys as three lines, and the user
could not enter them. The description now states the limit and asks
for one call per secret.
A new eval case reproduces the bundled request. The eval mock now
gives each card its own file, as T3 does.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Clarifies that each secret needs its own existing single-field card and makes evaluation mocks return distinct references. Secret handling and product defaults remain unchanged, with no obvious material risk.

The request_secret guidance now describes separate secret requests. The evaluation adds a case for three credentials. The grader can require expected calls to match different recorded calls.

Summary
Request-secret guidance and evaluation case apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/orchestrator/tools.ts, evals/mcp-tool-use/cases/pull-requests.ndjson, apps/server/src/provider/agentContextBudget.json
The tool description clarifies secret requests and file delivery. The new case expects separate file-delivery requests for three credentials, with no other calls. The recorded tool-list byte count changes from 47498 to 47489.
The grader supports expectations that must match different recorded calls. Tests cover three separate matching calls and cases with an invented value, a missing call, the wrong delivery type, or combined labels.
The evaluation has two narrow correctness gaps: alternative-tool expectations can fail, and the secret case can accept a multi-credential card. Fix them before relying on these checks.

The title names the main change: request_secret now asks for one value per card. It is short, specific, and in conventional commit form, so a teammate scanning history can identify the primary change. The changeset matches: the tool description now requires one secret per call and forbids combining values, and the eval is updated to a three-credential handoff with distinct calls.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem and Change sections clearly explain the bug (three pasted lines collapsed into one card) and the fix. Verification is detailed, with reproduction on github/main and the PR head, runtime results, screenshots, a transcript link, and a list of items not verified. The Scope and approval section is weak: it does not link a triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion, and it does not explain why the fix qualifies without one. The template also calls for a model and harness note, which the description includes at the end. The description is mostly complete, but the missing scope approval means it does not fully meet the template.
Resolution
Add a Scope and approval section. Link the triaged bug issue or the discussion with explicit maintainer approval, including the approval comment. If no prior issue exists, explain why this qualifies as a very small, focused fix of an obvious bug. Also label the Problem and Change sections explicitly, since the description currently uses a note and a long Verification block without clear Problem and Change headings.

Support tool alternatives in distinctCalls.
calls accepts tool alternatives such as link_pull_request|watch_pull_request, but this matcher compares that string literally. A matching link_pull_request therefore fails when the same expectation is moved to distinctCalls. Apply the same alternative matching here.

Reject multi-credential labels in secret-several-values-one-card.
The substring matcher lets a combined label plus two separate labels satisfy all three distinctCalls entries. A model can therefore violate the case rule and still pass grading. Use a per-call label matcher that accepts the intended credential label but rejects labels containing another credential name, and add the combined-plus-two-call sequence to the grader test.

Review comment at @evals/mcp-tool-use/cases/pull-requests.ndjson at line 17:
Update grading for secret-several-values-one-card so each request_secret call’s
label matches its intended credential and is rejected if it contains another
credential name. Add a grader test where one combined label plus two separate
labels must fail, ensuring exactly three calls alone cannot satisfy the case.

The private secret card accepts one line, but agents could bundle three credentials in one request. Require one secret per call and forbid combining values; update the existing eval to the reproduced three-line handoff and keep each mock result distinct.

Verified through the running web app with repo Playwright,
/usr/bin/google-chrome, and real Codexgpt-6.1-solturns through the local proxy. Created the project and threads through the app against a real git repository, using fresh isolated state and task-only random secret values.Reproduced on
github/main(9e85538535) and the original PR head (3bad363c63): telling the agent the three OVH credentials were copied as three lines produced one combined card. Its single-line input collapsed the three lines into one.Fixed and pushed
73ee8b91cc4e2d37a67bc84e9c3643575356f718to the existing head.
